Shellacked again...
ashley623 replied to FreakyFoucault's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I just got an email saying 'Congratulations! You have been chosen...' It was for a credit card company. -headdesk- -
Has anyone ever looked into U of ND? I got something in the mail from them, and I usually just throw those types of information packets away before I open them. For some reason, I did, and their program sounds really cool and you have the opportunity to study for a semester in Norway. I'm currently obsessed with the show Vikings. But...it's North Dakota.

Let's Distract Ourselves!
ashley623 replied to Pezpoet's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm getting my tonsils cut out next week. Maybe I'll be so distracted from the pain (and the medication) that I'll forget to obsessively check my email? -
Oh, awesome! I applied to Purdue as well, along with Louisville, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia Tech, and Tennessee, most with a rhet/comp concentration rather than lit.
-
Where all did you apply? I, too, only applied to MA programs.

2018 App Crunch Time
ashley623 replied to Pezpoet's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
So...I am a huge planner/overthinker, and the fact that I have no idea where I'll be living seven months from now is really starting to wear on me. Ugh. I just want some answers, so I can start planning visits, housing, envisioning myself living in the town, etc. How is it only January? -cry face emoji- -
2018 Blooper Real*
ashley623 replied to M(allthevowels)H's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
In the very first app I submitted (I corrected it before the other five went in, thankfully...) I referred to a character by the wrong name in my lit analysis writing sample. Twice. -
Anyone else obsessively logging in to every application portal justttt in case a decision has been posted? It's going to be a long few months.

If not English, then _____ ?

Sadly, my horse and his expenses FAR outweigh that of my car. -

@a_sort_of_fractious_angel I keep hoping I'll get some amazing offer from an MA program that would give me enough $$$ for both housing and being able to bring my horse. The finances are definitely the difficult part, as I've been living at home through undergrad and commuting so that I would be able to afford my horse's board. Do you have any tips with juggling these two huge expenses? PM me if you want. @mk-8 I'm glad there are some of us horse people our there in grad school. Every school I'm applying to is out-of-state, so I'm hoping it's somewhat doable. I've had my horse since high school and definitely want to bring him with! -

WHAT?! How did we not discuss this during our writing sample exchange?!?! A ton of horse friends I had sold their horses before college, and now I feel like a freakish anomaly wanting to take mine to grad school. -

I actually went to college as a back up plan; I wanted to pursue horses professionally and have worked for trainers on circuits that compete around the country, and my mom (and former trainer, actually) encouraged me to get a degree first. Over the course of my undergrad, I have still stayed quite actively involved with horses (I own my own horse and compete) and it's still a big part of my life, but the huge rise of drug issues in the world of show horses extremely turned me off from the idea of working long-term in the equine industry. I ended up loving being an English major and writer, and definitely wouldn't do horses professionally now. I'm definitely glad it turned out this way. There's not always money in writing, but there's even less in horses. -
Oh I definitely had several GRE nightmares. Glad it's behind me.

Oh my gosh. That would be THE ultimate dream! Haha

What's better: living alone or finding a random roommate?
ashley623 replied to jaaaayciee's topic in The Lobby
Oh man. You guys are freaking me out. My mom suggested (if I can afford it, obviously) renting out a small house in my name and then (with the landlord's permission) renting out the other 1-2 additional rooms so I can pick my roommates, as that is what she did. Ideally, I would like to find a roommate before moving that I'm super compatible with and everything is sunshine and rainbows, and we rent out a house together with both of our names on the lease. -
To lighten the mood... I had a dream last night that I got an acceptance call from a university that I didn't apply to (that doesn't exist irl). However, I was so relieved to just be accepted somewhere, that I rolled with it.

2018 App Crunch Time

I also had a Dec 15 deadline with a prof that said it was 'started' but not submitted. It turned out, there was a glitch in the system and she had to resubmit it. In case we happen to be having the problem at the same school, this was for Utah. -
Ironically, I really don't have many friends here in my hometown -- two of my closest friends live out of the area, and while I do have one good friend here, I don't see her extremely often. I'm sure I'll have moments of panic here and there, but I'm definitely feeling more excited than nervous at this point. You guys are awesome. I'm sure I'll be reading back on this thread when I'm getting worried about it again.

Hopefully it's not too early for this... All of my applications and the materials are in and are being reviewed; here's to the waiting game. I applied to six English rhet/comp concentration MA programs, in six different states outside my own. Good luck to everyone!!

I'm probably blind, but can someone link me to the results page?

No transcripts? Help.
ashley623 replied to sarahchristine's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Oh, yeah, I didn't even think of that -- mine truly were requested far in advance, so don't say that if you didn't, haha. -
No transcripts? Help.
ashley623 replied to sarahchristine's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I would be upfront and email them. I just graduated and requested my transcript far in advance, but there's only one person working the transcript office, and they said they might not be able to process my request until after my schools' deadlines. I simply emailed them explaining the situation and asking if I would be able to upload unofficial copies and said I would send the official copies as soon as I received them -- both the schools were very nice and understanding and said sure. It didn't matter in the end because I ended up getting my transcript in time, but my prospective schools didn't seem bothered or surprised. I'm sure it happens.
