I'd recommend applying to schools that require an interview as part of their process. That way in interviews you can highlight the "extra" stuff you've done more in depth than in your personal statement/resume.

If you’re interested at all in research, search for research labs with faculty from your program. There should be a faculty page that might hint at it, some are more blatant if others. If not, a quick google search with your school’s name and research lab should suffice. Pick a lab you think you’d be interested in working in and just touch on that for two or three sentences.
I guess one of my biggest problems when it comes to this is that I do not want to do research tracks... I'm only really interested in clinical!

I'm doing the same! Or i'm talking about their clinic and what they do there that interests me. I attended UIUC for my undergraduate degree and if you go to the faculty page and click on the associate professors there it will take you to their "website" and most talk about the research they are doing!
Ooh is there anything you could share about UIUC that makes it unique? How do you like the school and the area? Feel free to PM me if you want since that's a little off topic.

Does anyone have any tips as to how they are tailoring their personal statements to specific schools? I wrote one main personal statement and I am going to tweak it to each school by putting a paragraph as to why I want to attend that school. With some programs on my list I am having trouble finding more detailed info on their program (like Illinois, Urbana-Champiagn) and I don't want to say something generic. Any examples or tips to achieve this?! Thanks!

I didn't use it but I highly doubt that it is worth the money. It did not take that long for me to input my courses.

When I was putting together my personal statement, I found this website to be helpful: https://slpecho.wordpress.com/2013/01/15/letterofintent_slpgradschool/
Unfortunately, I lost my personal statement when I got a new laptop before grad school, but if I remember correctly, the outline of my essay was something like this:
1. Introduction- strong statement about why SLP is inspiring
2. Information about your background, such as research experience, volunteer experience, etc
3. Information about personal qualities that make you a good candidate for the program, and which populations you want to work with
4. Ending- tie the pieces of your story together and discuss the strengths of the program you are applying to specifically (e.g., course offerings, clinical sites, etc)
Even as someone with strong writing skills, I STILL had someone at the writing center critique my essay. Get as much feedback as you can! Best of luck with your applications
This is pretty helpful! I notice you decided on BGSU and that is one of the schools I am most concerned about writing my statement for because they say no more than 500 words! That just seems so short.

I'm currently STRUGGLING with writing my personal statement. Mostly with structure and keeping it concise while still showing why I am a good candidate. This whole process has me wondering if the SOP really is a make or break-- especially when some schools have a 500 word/one page limit! Anyone have any insight on this or spoken to admissions committees about it? What is unnecessary to include in your statement? How can we avoid being generic?!

I turned my application in Sept 24 (app due Oct 1) and it was verified by Oct 2. However, I'm sure CSDCAS will be saturated with applications for the Jan 15 deadline, so I'd suggest submitting by mid-December.
This is exactly the type of info I was looking for! Thanks. Just trying to get a time frame on how short/long it took at different times of different months.

Remember, most schools do not require your application to be verified by the due date, of course it is probably best to submit early :).
Here is a link to a list of programs and if they need verification by the due date: https://portal.csdcas.org/csdcasHelpPages/participating-programs-2/index.html
This helps so much thanks!

This might be a silly question to ask but you don't need to have all your apps done on csdcas for the verification process to begin correct? So once I submit an app and pay the fee then that app will be in line for verification, correct?
I believe once you turn in your first school's app it gets in line for verification and you don't need ALL school's apps.
-
I'm just curious about how long the verification process took for others based on the time period they sent their first application. I know that it's on a first come first serve basis so it probably takes longer for CSDCAS to verify later in the application cycle I am planning to submit my first application in around 11/19. For those who remember, when did you turn in your first application and how long after was it verified?
-
Hands down my biggest concerns about my applications are
- Letters of Rec: I asked professors in the CSD major whose classes I got As in and did really well.. I just am nervous that they do not know me well and my letters will be pretty generic.
- Statement of Purpose: I really am having trouble with how to stand out! I know I have strong grades and stats, I just don't want to be another boring SOP. Plus, I have so much trouble with staying concise. I feel like there's not enough room to fit everything in (Illinois for example has a 500 word limit!). I'm trying so hard not to be cliche too but it's hard when the actual reason I want to be an SLP is to "help people". Gotta figure out how to express that in better words.
- Lack of real-world experience: I never was able to secure a volunteering position with an SLP. All I have are shadowing hours... again, I just feel very generic as an applicant and I feel as though i'm gonna look like someone who did the bare minimum. However, I have babysat for many many years so i'm considering showing that as real-world experience in my SOP.

The earlier you can submit the better. I think it only took them like a week to verify mine because I didn't wait until the last minute when they got backlogged with thousands of applications.
Do you remember what date/time of what month you sent in your first application for it to only take a week for verification?
-
I'm not gonna sugar coat it-- you will simply not get in with a 2.5 writing score. You need a 4 to be competitive. The writing section is very easy to study for. I recommend getting the Magoosh test prep book on Amazon. They easily outline how to do fine on the writing.

Your projected quant score is fine, especially if your verbal is gonna be that high

I mean that CSDCAS won't start verifying your applications until you submit each schools, yes. Sorry if that was confusing!
Ok great thanks! It wasn't confusing I just wanted to make sure not ALL schools' applications need to be fully complete. That would freak me out more!

CSDCAS can't verify until you submit your application, so that means you have to have everything in and the LORs requested. The people writing your LOR do not need to send those in early, just by the due date.
Thank you! Quick question, when you say "until you submit your application" you just mean each school's individual application?
-
As far as I know I think it's just transcripts and fees??? I really am unsure though.
-
I understand that CSDCAS needs to verify your application and this can take up to four weeks to complete. However is it just transcripts that need to be sent in for CSDCAS to verify? Or do they need EVERYTHING including evaluations/letters of rec? What exactly does CSDCAS need in your account for them to move onto the verification process.
I am especially wondering because I am nervous that my professors will not get in my evaluations four weeks prior to my application deadlines but I still want my application to get verified before the before the deadlines.

Hi everyone. I thought it would be interesting if we shared what school is our top choice/dream school that we're applying to. It could be a good way to learn about other programs!
1. What is your top choice school and why?
2. Have you visited the school or attended before? If so, what did you learn about it on your visit/with your experience?
-
I'd love any insight into how you approached writing your personal statement! I'm one of those people who really does not feel special or have a great story
-
You're all amazing, thank you for the advice
-
Thanks everyone. I have another question, does anyone recommend paying for the transcript input service? Anyone who did it manually, can you let me know how that was?
Also when it comes to entering transcript, can I go ahead and enter all my transcript info I have so far then when my fall 2018 (current) semester grades come in, go back in and enter those?
Is it possible to make it in with a 143 quant score?

What schools did you get into with those scores?
