Questions for MSW students/grads...
TooExcited&Nervous replied to MettaSutta's topic in Social Workers Forum
I am a full-time advanced standing student at NYU. My grades are mostly mini assignments, participation, mid-term paper/exam and a final paper/exam. Some courses require less and some require more work. My mid-term and final papers are usually anywhere between 8-12 pages depending on the course. Outside of fieldwork and class, I say I spend about anywhere between 3-6 hours a week on coursework. Sometimes less depending on the week. -
I graduated with my BSW from Indiana University-Bloomington. My bestfriend graduated with her MSW from IUPUI. Hands down, IUPUI over UIndy.

Tour Schools Before or After Acceptance?
TooExcited&Nervous replied to asr13b's topic in Social Workers Forum
Hi, I did all my visits based on who accepted me. It saved me money and time. It also helped me narrow down my choices. I received the best vibes from NYU and they offered me the most. So it was a win-win. -
Columbia University MSW Fall 2019
TooExcited&Nervous replied to MettaSutta's topic in Social Workers Forum
Word of advice, BE PATIENT. Columbia takes FOREVER to get back to you. I heard back in late March after I applied in November of last year. If anyone needs help or advice with personal statements, PM me. I don't mind helping or giving advice. -
Make sure you write a great personal statement! Get involved (community service), pretty much just beef up your resume in the mean time. I suggest applying early. I applied early and heard back within a week. Also, be patient and don't stress too much! I am going into adv standing thru NYU this Fall, super excited!

If I end up liking NYC, then I will come back for the rest of my items. lol Plato's Closet and style encore, my places to go when cleaning out my closet. Then whatever I can't sell, I drop off at my local shelters/centers.

Columbia Social Work Program Fall 2018
TooExcited&Nervous replied to lanabeni's topic in Social Workers Forum
You can probably explain circumstances and try to apply for fellowships or assistantships. If you are taking off a year, I highly suggest looking into doing City Year or another Americorp program. Certain schools will discount your tuition heavily for doing one of those programs. I have been throwing this suggestion out to many people because it is definitely a good option to look into. -
Luckily, a round trip flight from my home state is around $118. Getting there isn't an issue, more so looking for a place. I am only taking the essentials with me. I'm leaving most of my items from my current apt in a storage.

Did you receive any offers from other schools. From the CSSW Facebook page, many people asked them to match their scholarship for another school. -

TooExcited&Nervous replied to lanabeni's topic in Social Workers Forum
I applied back in Nov and didn't get that email until March 1st, got accepted the 22nd. It truly just depends. Columbia's process seems to be all over the place, so no way to truly know anything at this point. -
Yes the award letter and financial aid package is the same. I received mine today as well.

Where else have you applied? I know NYU, Fordham, and a few other places are still accepting applications. -

@doctormelody Hav e you gotten in anywhere? -
I chose NYU due to the program and it being more clinical based. Also, they were more helpful and provided steady communication during the application process. For me, that says a lot about a program and how they treat their students. Columbia kept giving people the runaround and just overall not a good experience. I thought I would have heard back from them back in Jan or Feb since I applied in Nov. NYU has gone out there way to connect me with alumni from my current school that currently attend Silver. Have you visited both schools? A visit can make or break a decision.

Super excited to see you all this fall!

30 days but I just got my financial package today and I will for sure decline. They only offered $11K and that doesn't even put a dent in the $100k for the program lol. -

Honestly, they are probably waiting for other people to decline or accept their offers before sending out another waive of acceptance letters. -
Who gave you more funding? Columbia gave me $11,000 while NYU gave me $15,000

Don't be too nervous! A lot of applicants had way better stats than me but I got in for advanced standing. I think it truly boils down to the personal statement and practice example. -

It'll say there's a status update on the page. But everywhere else it still says submitted.
