  1. Did Northwestern say in a few weeks as of today?
  2. Basically same here except commuting from the suburbs- I heard parking on campus is really tough; I don't mind paying a bit but I'd much rather just have an easy space and walk a few minutes than worry about finding a spot after making the drive over. Any suggestions?
  3. Jumping in pretty late here, but for those of you saying housing starts at $450-500 per month, does this include utilities, near campus, and a room to yourself (the apartment I don't mind sharing)? I was planning on commuting from the suburbs to save money but if it's really that cheap I almost might as well rent a place.
  4. I'm going on a campus visit for a PhD I'm considering early next week (not an official campus day, they just set up a visit for me personally). Is there a dress code I should abide by or is it treated as a casual thing?
  5. Just curious, why is UNM doing that? Like, what benefits does it offer a school to be funding their MAs to become a sending program?
  6. Thanks for this! Really interesting, found it especially notable that more than 1/3 of Chicago's PhD students enter with the MAPSS. I had heard doing your MA there doesn't give you much more than an informal leg up for their PhD consideration but this seems to indicate a pretty decent advantage.
  7. UT Austin decisions are up on the website, though don't expect an email, as it states "This is your official notification. A letter will not be mailed to you." Super bland 3 line rejection, particularly enjoyed the phrasing of "on the basis of their recommendation, your application has been denied."
  8. I was accepted by SMU a couple weeks ago but have not heard from UT Austin yet either.
  9. Don't have any advice to add but I'm interested in similar programs so really appreciate you making this thread- Has anyone here completed either TUSA's program for the Huayu Mandarin Enrichment Program's scholarship by any chance?
  10. Has anyone heard anything from UT Austin this cycle?
  11. I think it's likely from the results and past cycles that all those accepted have been notified unfortunately, but expect to officially hear back in early March, probably early next week if I had to guess.
  12. An MA program can be worth it, if you have legitimate gaps that further education will help with. It's more so that the MA programs offered by these top schools are usually not worth it because the cost is extreme and prestige matters a lot less for the MA than the PhD. If you get a great deal (MAPSS for example does offer a few full rides) or are wealthy, then sure, go to the best program you get into, but otherwise the difference between an average MA and a great one on your application is not worth the cost.
  13. Thing is for Chicago's program though, I applied because I've actually heard of people getting full ride scholarships to make it a viable option. I haven't seen anything suggesting Columbia's is the same way in this regard.
  14. Yeah I thought about emailing just to do my due diligence and ask what their internal aid could possibly entail, but $50,000+ to attend an unnecessary MA is ridiculous.
  15. Did anyone else get an email inviting them to apply for Columbia's MA programs? I was mildly excited until I realized it 1. Wasn't a personal email and 2. "Please note that the estimated tuition cost for Academic Year 2018-19 is $57,078. While deadlines for external fellowships are likely to have passed, a certain amount of internal fellowship aid is available."
  16. I was, and the DGS was really nice to me as well, definitely gave off a good impression. I also was really surprised to see other people mentioning SMU on here- If you or any of the others are interested in further details feel free to message me!
  17. I heard back about a week ago. Best of luck to both of you!
  18. I can't speak for Rutgers so this advice is fairly general, but in regards to the line about not knowing how different your application would be, it's best to talk to people from schools you didn't get into and find out why you got rejected. If language training is all you'd need or it seemed to genuinely be a matter of being qualified but getting unlucky for whatever reason, that's one thing. But if it sort of sounds like your application likely isn't going to be good enough down the road either, that's really important to consider. Especially since Rutgers seems to check a few of your key boxes (regional, good funding), for you to turn it down you should feel fairly confident that you'll be able to get into a noticeably better school/situation a year from now. Or, at the very least, that you can expect to get into a school of Rutgers' quality again as backup if need be.
  19. Should we emailing DGS or the primary POI with this type of question?
  20. I'm assuming the same, but the one other possibility I've heard is that they rejected you for the PhD but sent your application along to MAPSS. If thats the case, it'll probably be a couple weeks until you hear anything.
  21. Are you saying next year because you've already been rejected from the schools you applied to this cycle? I don't mean to pry; just asking because I also applied to UChicago's MAPSS and haven't heard anything in terms of good or bad news.
  22. Just adding on to this, keep in mind that (depending on your plans) it may be a good idea to email a bit after decisions come out asking what held your application back. If you do so, I feel like you're more likely to get a thoughtful/honest response if you haven't already emailed about the decisions themselves.
  23. That's okay, thanks anyway and congrats on UofT! I'm familiar with it so feel free to PM if you have any questions about the school/city
