SSHRC Doctoral Award/CGS (funding for 2018-2019)
Caravaggista replied to PsychBoy's topic in The Bank
It doesn't matter much in my case since I'm taking the award to the U.S., so either way I will end up with the SSHRC fellowship! @UnlikelyGrad4 my university also said "sshrc will mail the results" and that further communication should be with SSHRC, but the university's School of graduate studies sent me the email anyway, so it's worth a shot! -
SSHRC Doctoral Award/CGS (funding for 2018-2019)
Caravaggista replied to PsychBoy's topic in The Bank
Hi all, my university just emailed me (I didn't contact them) telling me I was "selected as a recipient of a prestigious SSHRC doctoral scholarship." So for sure universities know! I'm not sure whether it is the CGS or the SSHRC, but either way I am super excited! Best of luck everyone! -
Thank you! I was looking at the English site and it made no mention of the date.

I only see "end of April" on their website. Could you please tell me/us where it says April 30th? Did I miss an update?

I wish I had answers to these questions, but alas all I have is flaring anxiety following this tweet. -

I'm pretty sure that by "doctoral graduate SSHRC research grant" the poster means one of the doctoral SSHRC scholarships unless SSHRC offers another kind of grants that I'm not aware of? Perhaps the tweet was about a CGS-M, the results of which were announced on April 1st. -

I was feeling super chill and not anywhere as stressed out as I was with grad school decisions, but then I saw this tweet. *enter anxiety* I'm hoping my school takes pity on me and lets me know before I get the notification via Canada Post... Hope everyone is doing well! Sending y'all positive vibes! -
Hi, I received my UofT acceptance in early/mid-afternoon February and I also know of other people who were offered PhD admission. I believe all offers have been made but not e everyone has made their decision, so perhaps you're on an "unofficial" waiting list? In any case, I would go ahead and contact the DGS or Gaby Sparks, they're wonderful people!

Hiya! From my understanding, PhD students are *guaranteed* university housing at the Columbia rate for 5 years. The application for 2018-2019 housing is not yet available, I think, so I would assume applications will be reviewed after the deadline and not on a first-come, first-served basis. We have until June 1st, so there's still time! If you're unsure, you can always contact the GSAS liaison at UAH.

Hi everyone - Columbia admit here as well. Thanks for the valuable comments and information. I will end up in Columbia Housing in all likelihood and will probably aim for The Arbor if I can (the amenities make up for the distance IMO). Does anyone have any thoughts on The Arbor? Also, could current Columbia students (@anon1234567 !) please explain what would happen if I receive an external fellowship on the first year? I was reading up on it and found the GSAS explanations rather confusing. But it's possible I'm just losing my mind with my MA thesis... So maybe it does make sense. Super excited to meet future NYC/Columbia grads! ??

Regarding my post above: never mind! I think they were given “in name only” and the recipients were given SSHRC-D instead. -

Hi everyone! I was looking at last year’s award winners and realized that a few people took CGS-D ($105,000) to US universities. Any thoughts on that? I’ve been accepted to a PhD program in NYC and if there’s a way I can get $35k/year it would be a life-saver. Good luck to everyone! -
¡Mil felicitaciones, @fv32 ! Sounds like a very sweet deal!

Congrats on the acceptance! Just so you know, and from what I've heard/seen at McGill, the TA application process is a bit tricky and regimented by seniority/priority lists, so it could potentially be very unlikely to score a TAship in your first year (or at all in the MA). Tal vez depende del departamento, pero no contaría en contratos de TA/RA para sobrevivir, sobre todo que universidades en Quebec pagan poco comparado a otras universidades canadienses.

Could the Columbia admit manifest her- or himself? I had my follow-up interview on Friday and seeing your post on the board gave me a mini-heart attack! Would you be so kind as to appease my anxiety?
-
I'm sorry to hear that you've been waitlisted but I've seen people get accepted from the waitlist! My status hasn't changed and I haven't heard from them so I'm assuming it's yet another rejection. If you don't mind me asking, how did you find out?
-
Has anyone else interviewed for Columbia's LAIC? Have you had a follow up interview with other faculty members! HMU!
-
Thanks for doing this, @storiadell'arte ! I've given up all hope on Harvard and at this point just need closure so I can move on. Anyone else interviewing with JHU today? I'm just sitting here waiting for the time to come and dying of anxiety / trying to prepare for it without knowing what I should be preparing for!
-
@storiadell'arte @FreakingOutFragonard @ReichenbachFalls Totally down to join the Harvard anxiety train. I don't think that Harvard does interviews and when I met with my POI last semester that did not come up. JHU does interviews, though, in case that's also on your list!

Hi everyone! I'm a bit late to the game but I figured it's better to join in later than never. I've applied to 9 PhD programs, though most of them in a different discipline. I've applied to Columbia's Latin American and Iberian Cultures PhD and to The University of Western Ontario's Hispanic Studies doctoral program. I think Columbia is a long shot (especially since my training is not in Spanish or literature, and also because it's Columbia!) but I'm excited to hear back from them and get the waiting over with! @senorbrightside if you're not from Montreal, I've been living/studying here for many years now and would be happy to give any pointers if you end up going to McGill! También apliqué a UofT, así que tal vez podemos estar en contacto más adelante. Good luck to everyone and my heartfelt congratulations to those already accepted!
-
UCLA applicants: does anyone else see "GMAT test score: awaiting" in their application checklist? It wasn't there earlier and I'm hoping it's a glitch!
-
To the Berkeley admit: congratulations! Would you be willing to share your area of interest / your POI's name, either here or through DM? Let me know and once again congratulations!
-
Does anyone have the faintest idea why JHU might have extended their application deadline?
-
Thank you for mentioning this, it's always nice (and re-assuring) to hear that our field is acknowledging the relevance of (colonial) Latin American art.
-
Greetings everyone! I can see I'm a bit late to the party, but I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying some freedom now that most applications are in. Congrats on getting your applications in! It's no small feat! I've applied to 6 PhD programs in the US and 3 in Canada (most Art History, some Hispanic Studies). I focus on colonial Latin American / Early Modern and it warms my heart to see fellow Latin Americanists in this thread (on some level we are competing against each other, but am elated to see our field grow!). If I'm being honest, I'm not dealing with the uncertainty and constant expectation very well. Realistically speaking, I am not expecting admission to many of the schools I applied to, but the waiting game is taking a toll on me. I know refreshing my email, checking my app statuses, and lurking the forum you won't do any good, but I can't help it! I've tried to pick up new hobbies/will be busy TAing, but still! I hope the waiting game is treating you well and look forward to get a sense of where everyone will be headed!
