Hi all, my university just emailed me (I didn't contact them) telling me I was "selected as a recipient of a prestigious SSHRC doctoral scholarship." So for sure universities know!
I'm not sure whether it is the CGS or the SSHRC, but either way I am super excited! Best of luck everyone!

Hiya! From my understanding, PhD students are *guaranteed* university housing at the Columbia rate for 5 years. The application for 2018-2019 housing is not yet available, I think, so I would assume applications will be reviewed after the deadline and not on a first-come, first-served basis. We have until June 1st, so there's still time! If you're unsure, you can always contact the GSAS liaison at UAH.

    Hi everyone -
Columbia admit here as well. Thanks for the valuable comments and information.
I will end up in Columbia Housing in all likelihood and will probably aim for The Arbor if I can (the amenities make up for the distance IMO). Does anyone have any thoughts on The Arbor?
Also, could current Columbia students (@anon1234567 !) please explain what would happen if I receive an external fellowship on the first year? I was reading up on it and found the GSAS explanations rather confusing. But it's possible I'm just losing my mind with my MA thesis... So maybe it does make sense.
Super excited to meet future NYC/Columbia grads! ??

Congrats on receiving outside funding! Columbia is pretty flexible with outside funding. You can either get a top off option, but this will depend on the amount of your award (up to $15,000), which means you will keep your outside funding along with Columbia funding. Or you can push off Columbia funding for one year or more, and use the award money. And then continue with your Columbia funding the following year. You can even play around. One year get external award, next year Columbia funding. You still get your healthcare funded, and all your fees, even if you push off your Columbia funding by one year or several years. Columbia funding is guaranteed , and remains yours to claim whenever you are ready. But make sure to speak to the grad director, and your future supervisor about this. They may have some useful advice.
I live at the Arbor. PM me if you want more details about it.

Hola, I've been accepted in several Spanish/Latam Cultures programmes in the United Kingdom (have you considered those universities?). Scholarships are hard to get, I also received an offer from The University of Auckland (Latin American Studies, multidisciplinary approach including not only literature and film studies but also History, política, education and economy) including a very generous scholarship and no teaching responsabilities (however they give me the opportunity to teach at the Spanish departament with a weekly extra wage), funds for conferences, summer schools and exchange programs, and up to one year abroad for researching.
I think I'm going to take it... My other options are King's College London and Manchester.

    Congrats on the acceptance!
Just so you know, and from what I've heard/seen at McGill, the TA application process is a bit tricky and regimented by seniority/priority lists, so it could potentially be very unlikely to score a TAship in your first year (or at all in the MA). Tal vez depende del departamento, pero no contaría en contratos de TA/RA para sobrevivir, sobre todo que universidades en Quebec pagan poco comparado a otras universidades canadienses.

I got my first acceptance on Friday...McGill! However...without funding. However, I can apply for TAs and RAs, but they're not guaranteed. I'm going to see what this week brings.

    Hello all,
I got accepted into the University of New Mexico, which was my top program, so I’m super excited! I just got the letter today. I was getting nervous, so anyone who hasn’t heard anything, keep the faith!

Has anyone else interviewed for Columbia's LAIC? Have you had a follow up interview with other faculty members! HMU!

Thanks, lmenol. I took your advice and contacted the department by phone. For those who are wondering (and still somewhat hopeful), I was told official decisions will be released via email later this week.

    Hi everyone!
I'm a bit late to the game but I figured it's better to join in later than never.
I've applied to 9 PhD programs, though most of them in a different discipline. I've applied to Columbia's Latin American and Iberian Cultures PhD and to The University of Western Ontario's Hispanic Studies doctoral program.
I think Columbia is a long shot (especially since my training is not in Spanish or literature, and also because it's Columbia!) but I'm excited to hear back from them and get the waiting over with!
@senorbrightside if you're not from Montreal, I've been living/studying here for many years now and would be happy to give any pointers if you end up going to McGill! También apliqué a UofT, así que tal vez podemos estar en contacto más adelante.
Good luck to everyone and my heartfelt congratulations to those already accepted!

I think it’s pretty common, actually. GradCafe also tends to attract a bit of a more ‘competetive’ Crowd from what I’ve been seeing. I feel like I’ve heard from several people that since they were already going through the process of applications, they figured they might as well throw out an application to a few reach schools, too. No one ever really knows what those Adcomms want in an applicant anyway... That’s definitely not the only way to do it, though! Applying to only non-ivies is also a very valid choice.

@Caravaggista Mucha suerte con todas tus solicitudes  I will definitely ask you all about Montreal (If I speak English, Spanish and Catalán fluently and know some Italian, is it easy to fake French? For example!) if I get into McGill and end up there. But we could both end up at Toronto too! The thing about not hearing back from any place yet is that we still have the hopes and dreams to keep us occupied! You could be at Columbia still!

I just had my interview with Texas Tech. I think I would be happy in their department if I were to be accepted. They seem like great people. My fave profe from undergrad is now there.

I applied to Columbia as well but have not heard anything from them yet! I imagine you want to work with Russo, so your lack of training in literature is probably not an issue

The professor of my modern Latin American art class last semester said that the colonial era needs more scholars. FWIW.
