Not sure what you mean about taxes. Do you mean employment taxes? Washington State doesn't have state income tax. Seattle's sales tax rate is close to 10%, though.

Thanks @Axil. I'm going to call in the morning -- it was my 4th email from them in 2 days so I think it's time to talk to a human. -
This threadthe sheet are GOLD! Thank you, everyone.

Soooo....if you get waitlisted via email from program faculty, is it customary for the "official" notification through the online application system to say "denied"? -

Waitlisted at Oregon State. The letter said it's a short waitlist. -
Should I tell my advisor I’m depressed
maengret replied to FirstYearHistory17's topic in Officially Grads
@FirstYearHistory17 I am sorry you're experiencing this and for how awful the university health clinic experience was, too. @TakeruK has excellent, excellent commentary. -

I'm out of "reactions" but that totally makes sense! -

@semioclasm Ask. My request language is similar to @midwest-ford‘s: “I’d love to visit. I am traveling from [far far away]. Does the university offer travel assistance?” One school told me no. By the time I booked my flight, they found money to offer me partial reimbursement (a very pleasant surprise!), -

@BabyScientist Me, too, on the reversal thing! Plus, I’m just plain dumbfounded on how to evaluate programs. I went to a nontraditional college where all the BAs are just “liberal arts” degrees, and my advisor was an MSW. They’ve not been the most knowledgeable about a more conventional grad school process. @Ishouldbewriting I know little about how this works, but have you already negotiated for more money from top choice? Student loan debt is the g.d. devil, so advocate for and take care of yourself financially if everything else is equal! [raises hand] I have the “benefit” of knowing that one adcom collectively just wasn’t into my application. After an informal interview and making sure they had some lost application materials, I got an offer. But there’s this feeling of “who was on the committee and why didn’t they like my app and will I have a hard time in their classes?” I’m also feeling like an outsider to academia and that I won’t fit in socially. My BA was kinda hippie, I’m a “returning student” and I have no idea what to expect. I’ve lived away from my family for eons, but one of my schools is where some family live and they are putting on the pressure. It would be so nice, I think, to be near them. My significant other said to apply wherever, he’d make it work. I got his input before submitting my applications and there a few places that were hard no’s. But I need him to do research on job prospects in those towns so I can factor that in to my decision. -
Good luck on the rest of of your applications. Fingers crossed and all that!

@punctilious they sent me a rejection this morning. Waitlist notice this afternoon. At this rate, I’ll be accepted by the morning @LexHex oh no! I am sorry about the missing letter. It is so easy to lose track of those, especially if you have to keep reminding the same person... Are you applying for MA or PhD?
-
Waitlisted at Oregon State (MA).
-
Okay. That would be fine ha ha! This was someone typo'd the year (2017 instead of 2018). I can't tell if they work for a nitpicker or if they really had a rejected person contact them to ask about the date, but I felt like "leave me out of it and let me live my life!"
-
You know what? If you send me a rejection email, you really don't need to email an hour later to correct a typo in the first message.

Search the websites and site calendars or maybe call a department admin. I found one visit day through a site search -
Good luck! I’m waiting to hear from Louisville (MA), too.

@la_mod CONGRATULATIONS!!

I’ve been a “non-traditional” student for almost all my college career. I was able to find good AA and BA programs with huge age spans among the students and instructors. This is one of the reasons I want to visit before I make a decision, so I can see what the current cohorts are like and how well I connect with folks. It’s only happened once that I had an instructor who was thrown off by my age (I was easily 10 years older) and I didn’t have any choice but to figure out how to work around the awkwardness.
-
I’m not surprised about the weekend call. One DGS I spoke with said they like to notify ASAP so they don’t lose out to other programs. I keep hearing variations of that from other professors and also friends who work in administration at grad programs. ^^^this! Congratulations!^^^

@mk-8 Ha! I can't get away with that (canceling) -- I'm hourly $ at the community college. Kicking myself because I keep meaning to propose Tuesday or Wednesday sessions and the deadlines sneak past me every quarter.
-
@mk-8 oof! So far mine are both Fridays. I teach Thursday nights and have to fly ~2,000 miles so may not be happening on the official open dates for me, either.
-
!!!!YAY!!! ! Congrats @HopefulRhetorician (more like ActualRhetorician now, eh?) and @mk-8 ! Are you going to the open house (or whatever it's called) on March 3?

Over the moon! Accepted at Iowa State's RCPC masters! Unofficial -- email says formal acceptance with TA offer is coming soon.
