  1. @punctilious I agree with the others, you just don’t know if there are other surprises. You have time to notify them all of your decision. The other schools may also want the opportunity to sweeten their offers. If it were me, I’d want to compare and make sure I’ve got the right fit and most money.
  2. I have an offer but the school isn't doing an open house/admitted students day. I've been corresponding with the department admin. Do I go through the admin to ask about travel reimbursement to visit campus, or do I go straight to the department chair who signed the offer letter?
  3. Congratulations! I know the GTA thing isn't great but fingers crossed for you that it works out.
  4. Hang in there, @katie64! IIRC, you're also still waiting on Louisville? I have no intel, just sharing the anxiety of waiting on that particular decision.
  5. @M(allthevowels)H It wouldn't have occurred to me seek it out, but I've been combing through all documents they sent me. I anticipated keeping a couple of my clients, but now I know I'll need to hand them off to colleagues if I choose this program. Fortunately, I'm looking at places with lower cost of living than where we currently live. Between assistantship and spouse's working, it will be okay. Again, our wild card with health insurance. @themoderncondition It sounds like you're working with your program on the question, so hopefully you all can work out something. But I was thinking of you when I suggested editing work -- if your program's okay with you working, it would be a nice option schedule-wise to not have to commute to another location. @TakeruK thanks for chiming in, as always!
  6. It’s in a grad student handbook they emailed me. I don’t have anything else to compare to, yet, though I’m expecting details from a second program in the next few days.
  7. I joined some local editors groups and there’s a fantastic FB group called “Editors Association of Earth” that it is really helpful. Also, the “EAE Backroom” group is good for asking specific, client-related questions. Both groups discuss pricing issues like what you’ve described. I get a lot of referrals from my local group’s email list.
  8. @JustPoesieAlong I’d need permission, I guess, if I’m reading this clause correctly: “Students appointed to an assistantship or fellowship may not engage in any concurrent employment without the expressed consent of the department or program and their dean or director. Requests for an exemption must be made in writing. Participation in any unapproved employment will result in the immediate withdrawal of the assistantship.”
  9. @themoderncondition @JustPoesieAlong One program I'm in prohibits working outside the assistantship (summer is, of course, okay) That's great your admin is okay with it, @themoderncondition Would you consider something like freelance editing? I bet you're well qualified, the work is flexible hours, and the going rate is NYC area is probably quite good. It's one of the things I do as a freelancer now. @JustPoesieAlong summer work is one of my questions for campus visits. The added element of health insurance being only during the assistantship (i.e. 9 months) is a complicating factor.
  10. @themoderncondition, @JustPoesieAlong Are you thinking of working in addition to an assistantship?
  11. @neuronfire94I have a friend who makes up wild stories each time someone asks her about not drinking. Same party, ten different answers. May not play as well with Psychologists, but I've always liked her outlandish response to what is an insensitive question.
  12. Thanks. Hope the call goes well! I’m waiting for the “formal” offer, too, but went ahead and booked the trip to visit in the meantime.
  13. Curious if any other Iowa State folks have received formal offers yet? @canadianchart @mk-8 @HopefulRhetorician
  14. Saint Louis this week and Iowa next week. Have fun at Purdue and report back (I applied but haven't heard anything).
  15. Congrats-ish on the waitlist. I don't know for sure, but I think an email to say thanks and confirm your interest is good form (bascially: contact them in the same way they contacted you). If you know you don't want a spot even if you're moved up on the waitlist, then tell them that.
  16. Congrats! Will you be there for visit day in a few weeks?
  17. I start with Dr and, like others, switch to first name when they switch to first name. Mine or theirs. I may be wrong about this etiquette-wise, but I follow this rule: once a more senior person addresses me in the familiar first name, we’re first name people. i know there are professors who think familiar address should be between peers only, and students are not peers. By my thinking, that kind of professor would keep the formal address of Mx Jones when talking to a student. I hate this stuff. It reinforces elitism and classism.
  18. Hey, y'all! Have you seen this beast? @Warelin has picked up the effort from years past to update a funding package spreadsheet. If you've got updated info, please drop it in the file. If you're worried about at the tracking, you can add to it anonymously.
  19. @E. Coronaria Maybe you know their hiring trends to be different -- very few places fill a position within 4 weeks anymore, but you know your company better. Also...sometimes, even when we're leaving for a good reason (not because we're upset with the job), even when the boss is happy for us, people get separation anxiety in ways that don't make our last few weeks pleasant...
  20. @E. CoronariaI think you'll find once you've given notice that you'll get short-timer's syndrome. Everything about workload and priorities changes when you know you're not long for the work anymore, even if you don't intend for that to be the case. Companies will either fill positions quickly or stick someone else with your workload while they "re-evaluate the position." Either way, it's not in your control. A month is more than sufficient and perfectly professional in your situation. If you want to help our your boss, let her know you've given thought to how to handle the transition and would be happy to discuss (but know it's her call and she may not welcome your input).
  21. Would it be poor form to make a plug for updates to the sheet in the acceptances thread?

@athan892 the stipend is most likely taxable income, like any other job. How much the school would withhold is in part determined by the IRS. Plus any fees, like if you have to pay a portion of your healthcare. The program should be able to give this information.
