  1. Instead of just posting the research being done in your department, maybe also mention whether or not the research team is accepting new students. I shouldn't have to email every university to ask if the algebra team is accepting students, but I don't want to give you my $80+$27+$10 for you to tell me I'm not a @$^#%&% fit! Also! Why do you need my CV if I have to also just type everything out! Some of my applications asked me to list every math class I have taken, the professor, the course number, the TEXTBOOK USED, and TWO IMPORTANT TOPICS COVERED. IT WAS HELL. Your ass knows damn well what I covered in differential equations (hint: differential equations)
  2. Just curious how everyone made their way here (reddit, word of mouth, google, etc)
  3. I would also maybe be inclined to think that maybe chem/bio/hard sciences are on these sites more as well. I was being trained for grad school classes at all of research endeavors and was told about this site by the math grad students I worked with
  4. I know its mathematics and statistics, but I feel like it's all statistics ITT. Any potential pure (or even applied?) math PhD students lurking? (I know there's mathematicsgre.com butttttt I feel like everyone there is applying to Top 10 only...)
  5. One of the universities I applied to doesn't even have the application w/chance of funding deadline until March 1st. Which means they probably don't even start looking until then and many had today as the deadline I thought late deadlines were kind of cool until now
  6. If you are teaching a required introductory course that is primarily freshmen, just know that Fall semester is always better than Spring semester. Always. I learned that the hard way over the last couple years...
  7. I like to poke around the forums while I'm at work, but I have some weird superstition where I REFUSE to open anything in the "grad school life" section, for fear I will jinx myself. This whole thing is going to make me go crazy
  8. I feel this. During my last job interview, I sucked myself into some spanx and wore some cheap dress from Amazon (really good plus sized business clothes! at your doorstep in 2 days with prime!) and I hated that I had to wear the spanx but I felt like it drew the focus off of my body and onto my words... the world sucks. good luck!
  9. Well dangit, now I'm going to start checking my email all night Congrats though!
  10. No, you pretty much are advised to never accept any offers without funding. You also usually don't get an advisor until a year or two in. Blah, I'm just hoping I hear positive things from other institutions that come with funding so I can just write this university off. But if it gets closer and I get desperate, I guess I can nudge again? Thanks, yall!
  11. I used to love weekends.....now they're just days I KNOW I won't hear back. How am I actually glad it's Monday?
  12. Okay, so I was accepted to a PhD program, but the letter said nothing with regards to funding. So, I emailed the graduate school director and asked if there was somewhere I am supposed to check for funding information, or if there's a certain date I should be waiting for. I applied for fellowships and assistantships. This was his reply (ignore the crossed out part, that was a different question): Dear (AnxiousNerd), Thanks for your message. Our Graduate School already addressed the issue of signing in your account. We already got your application form for a TA/RA-ship. We have a very limited number of TA-ship. The number also depends how many students who are holding a TA-ship will graduate. There is no futher website/link about the information of TA/RA-ship. Best regards, (ConfusingProfessor) Does this mean I will hear later or does this mean no?
  13. Neither of my parents even graduated high school, so I'm not really sure how I happened. Graduated early with a 3.8 and a degree in mathematics. Currently being paid to do research in Germany (I'm from the US). Now I'm waiting to hear back from pure math PhD programs! My parents were kind and loving, but zero help in this process, lol. They have no idea how aaaany of this works.

  15. I personally adore Houston and do think it would be worth the trip. A lot of people that go to Rice just stay within a few blocks of rice because 1. Rice campus is large, gorgeous, and has great stuff. The library is my favorite, and 2. it's within walking distance of a lot of things. It's near the "museum district" which means that there are many museums, food places, grocery stores, and churches very closeby. Lots of bike trails in the area too. For everything else, uber and lyft. It does get hot. No lies there. But everything is air conditioned, if that helps. I would say absolutely go visit. You have nothing to lose, and you get a free trip to Houston! Get some good food and good culture while you're there

  17. Question! On the results page, I keep seeing people that were "accepted via phone." When that's the case, are the departments really calling each person to notify them of acceptance? I will be overseas for the next two months and am 1. seven hours ahead and 2. unable to accept calls from America. What if I don't answer? Or are these people calling the departments themselves to find out? Phone seems so unreliable.
  18. I wish that no one knew I applied to graduate schools so that everyone would stop asking
  19. I'm dying. I had no idea this would be so awful. I thought I had an idea, but I didn't. Everytime I get an email, I damn near sh^t myself. AAAAAAAAAAAAA
