  1. Hi all, I got accepted today into a program I really like, and I was offered funding. The website for this program offers a lot of statistics, which I appreciate. A lot of schools try to keep ratios at around 50/50 for international/domestic students. This program, however, is 80% international students, 20% domestic. Is this a factor that should be considered for any reason? Like, does it matter that I will be in the minority there as a domestic student? I feel like there must be a reason that schools aim to keep the ratio even, which makes me think it should be something I should consider as well, but I am not really sure why... Thank you!
  2. I'm waiting to hear back from Tennessee Knoxville as well! but for math rather than chemeng
  3. Okay well it sucks that other people are in the same boat as be re: regret, but I'm glad I'm not alone. It would be a lot easier to apply to more reach schools if everything weren't so damn expensive Anyway, when all is said and done, I think the regret will fizzle away. It's probably a byproduct of the anxiety
  4. I would maybe get in touch with the disabilities accomodation office at the university and get their opinion. I personally do not think you would need to disclose it beforehand, as they accepted you based on your merit, not your social skills or ability to stay still. But if you do need extended time on tests and breaks during class, I would talk to the office of disability accomodation, maybe get something in writing from them, and then ask for a meeting with the DGS before classes start. I am interested in hearing the other responses though! Good luck and congrats!!
  5. This doesn't answer your question too much, but here's a whole thread of people with <3.0 being accepted places! I would maybe search there for a little bit
  6. My suggestion would be for you to haul ass to the doctor, tell the doctor to give you the strongest stuff they've got, and then hope you get better. That being said, I do NOT think anyone would be upset that you didn't fly out and infect them all. You could maybe even reschedule. Good luck!
  7. It really is an awful feeling. Same with me and UT Austin and then also Purdue. It's just hard to convince yourself to spend all the money if you are feeling as though you are not qualified. But then you see you might be qualified! It just reaaaally is killing me.
  8. Is anyone having any regrets? Like there were some schools I did not apply to because I didn't think I would get in, but now they're sending out acceptances and I feel like I could have had a shot and now it is eating me alive??
  9. Yeah, the one university I heard back from only sent the letter via snail mail. Very strange, especially because I am not even in the country right now. Had to have someone open it for me.
  10. I would say that if you are offered any interviews, do not mention that that's part of your plan. It seems sort of sketchy, I guess, but I do think it could be detrimental to your chances. Unless them knowing is very important to you. A friend of mine began her PhD in linguistics and an advisor wouldn't take her because of her maternity plans.
  11. The heart react was for solidarity. How many places did you apply? Obviously there are still some schools seriously looking at and considering your application or you would've head from them already. Hang in there. This shit is tough.
  12. The bias is real and it's there and it really sucks. I would say try to dress in darker solid colors, and I would try to EXUDE confidence. Just radiate comfort and confidence and kindness and hope that when they think back on you, that's the initial thing they remember. Again, sucks that there has to be tips for this, but that's all I've got. Luckily, my programs don't really interview.
  13. Positivity post: I'm 2 posts away from switching from Decaf to Caffeinated
  14. My fiance keeps saying "whatever happens happens. It's in their hands now. There's no sense in agonizing over it" okay duh but ??? If I could just not agonize, I would ???
  15. After you've been accepted (knock on wood), around when do you move to your new area? Do you plan to move at the beginning of summer to get acclimated? Or maybe the beginning of august? Or is your date dependent on leases? What's typical? Danke!
  16. I really don't feel like there's a wide variety on mathematicsgre... I go there every so often, but I prefer it here. Even the applicant profiles are like, >95% on the mGRE
  17. I applied to mostly math, but I also applied to a couple econ phd programs too! Which I realize is sort of strange, but I did undergrad in both haha. For Econ, I did WUSTL, Texas A&M, and University of Houston
  18. Commuting to Houston would be a shit show because Houston traffic is so gnarly. That being said, my fiance was a paralegal at a law firm in Bryan for a while, and while I don't know too much, there might be some options. But god B/CS is a miserable place.
  19. I hope so too, but also when their first deadline is March 1st, it doesn't make sense to start accepting people before then. Especially if they have limited spots. I feel like rolling admissions are usually "soft deadline Jan 1st, final deadline March 1st"
