Hi All, As you've noticed, I've changed the forum software. I found the old software frustrating and thought that to some extent it hindered the community development. If you want to rant and complain, please do so in this thread and direct all insults towards me, the other mods were not really aware of my plans. Yes it'll take some getting used to, and I'm sure there are lots of things that don't work quite right just yet. So let me know and I'll get around to fixing them ASAP! Thanks for your patience! [issues] The new software is not aware of which posts you had read on the old forum. I suggest you just 'mark all as read' and start again, if you keep track of those things.Use Edit Your Profile (top right) to update the new profile fields. It seems some user's passwords were not imported correctly. So, if you can't login, try resetting the password. The software is showing some forums as unread even though you've read all the posts. This is a known issue with the s/w, a fix is coming soon. Rest assured the s/w is tracking which posts you've read. Just not doing a good job of showing you via the forum icons. I'm working on moving over your 'program' field right now... - Done! I can't find a link to the results page via the Forums with this new format. - Done!

Bank Transfer or Personal Check
bgk replied to portugabel's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
With a wire transfer there will be several deductions depending on the route the funds take to your account. The bank of your home country may charge a flat rate, then intermediary banks will charge a handling fee too (maybe $25 per intermediary?). The nice thing is the transfer can happen within a matter of hours once it reaches the Fedwire system. You might investigate any ForEx (foreign exchange) operators in your home country, as these usually give you a better dollar rate than your bank. -
Change topic research upon arrival?
bgk replied to niocwacs's topic in Applied Sciences & Mathematics
Unless you've been assigned an advisor (which is unlikely for a math program) it should be fine. I'm sure the adcoms realize that people will be a bit unsure about what they want to work on. Don't make a big fuss about it, just take the relevant classes and impress the right professors so they will be interested in taking you. -
Aww I was only kidding guys! It's great you're still here.

Yes, find something better to do!!

Not quite MDLee, there's another status beyond Mocha ....

You win (thank t_ruth for convincing me). Please refrain from posting misleading information here. And use due diligence before drawing conclusions from things you read on this site.

Because the thread was entirely useless. If you want to talk about NSF Grad fellowships then use this thread. If you want to chat use the lobby. If this thread gets derailed too, I'll lock it! This is not a freedom of speech issue, it's a keep the forum tidy issue.
-
How about I just lock this thread? That way you can all calm down for a few minutes. I'll unlock it later.

Hi Guys, I received the following via email: So, if you're interested get in touch!

Hi Guys, I'd like to introduce new mod #1, t_ruth. We may or may not add another few mods over the next week or two, but let's give t_ruth a warm welcome!

What kind of forums are you thinking? ec86's suggestion is a good one... what else?

Hi All, The forum has been a huge success this admit season. In this final month, I'm asking to see if there's a couple of people who would be interested in being global moderators. Your duties would include monitoring the forums, moving misplaced posts, deleting dupes, and just generally keeping things ticking along. It'd be great if you were willing to stay around after the admit season is over, but not essential. For those who don't have the time (why are you reading this?? ) if you still are interested in helping without the moderator title, remember you can always "report this post" using the little "!" icon in the triangle at the top right of each post. If you're interested please send me a PM. Look forward to hearing from you.

That's the "blocked pipe effect". When I shut the forum down in the middle of the day for 20 minutes, and then turn it back on, WHOOSH, and everyone comes back

Hi Guys, I've made a LOT of behind the scenes changes today. Sorry for the various downtime / blank pages / 404s. I think things will be a lot be faster henceforth. I'll write a more technical post later, but for now I am going to eat (for the first time in 9 hours) and enjoy the final half of Lost

Just to make you feel bad, I added 5 more folks to the list. Guess what, you're on there!
