  1. Hi Guys, Similar to last year, this year we'll be offering blogs for users who are interested in posting about their admission experience. For some idea about what we expect, see last years blog posts. Tech stuff: This year the blogging is done within the forum software. This makes managing things a bit easier (for us) and means the look and feel will be a bit more consistent. We plan to feature the blogs on the main 'admissions' site, so non forum users will probably be taking a look too. An RSS feed will be available, so it'll be like a 'real' blog in that sense. But beyond that I'm not sure how it'll work out, I had a quick play and it seems fairly straight forward, but there aren't many sites out there using this feature so it'll be a learning experience for all involved! Non-tech stuff: We'd like the right to keep your posts up indefinitely, but we'll have minimal editorial control over what you say (maybe a few edits for strong language and such). For some perhaps it'll be cathartic to write and for others just to read. Anyway ... reply here if interested and I'll turn on the feature and we can see how it goes!
  2. Hi Guys, Could you let me know which subforums would be appropriate here? Creative Writing? Film Studies? Media Studies? (Film and Media Studies?) Painting? Poetry?! Reply with some suggestions and I'll try to get a consensus.

  4. Ask and ye shall receive. I've setup a dedicated SOP forum and listened to rising_star re: adding a writing samples forum too. We'll get around to moving exists posts over in time. But please start to use the new forums ASAP!
  5. Way back when ... I asked my UK advisor to write a paragraph in my LOR explaining the UK grading system, but also converted my overall undergraduate % to an approx. GPA.
  6. Hi All, One troublesome bug concerning tracking which topics have been read should now be fixed.
  7. Hmm! Let me sort out my report writing (i.e. SQL) skills and get back to you.

  9. I've closed this thread because this request is a bit off topic (we're all about grad school applications here). I've left the thread viewable, if someone has some information perhaps they will send you a PM.
  10. In the US the full time "academics" i.e. people who do teaching and research are generally all referred to as professor, which is a job title. In terms of seniority it goes "Assistant", "Associate" and "Professor". Generally assistant profs are on the tenure track, but not yet tenured. This means they are essentially being tested for 4-6 years. Assuming they make suitable progress then they are given tenure (giving them all the academic freedom they need without the worry of being fired, say ). Along with tenure usually comes the promotion to Associate Professor. There are various merits and demerits of going with an assistant (untenured) vs a tenured prof. My experience has been that the good assistant profs, fresh out of graduate school or postdoc, are full of interesting and relevant research ideas and are willing to help you succeed in your research, they can be quite pushy, which is good. Some tenured profs are like this too, but less so. Joining an assistant prof who is 3.5 years in to their research is a slight gamble, because in 2 more years they may not gain tenure. Although usually they would know this themselves and so would probably not take on any new students. Hope that helps?! PS For your Stanford professor, I'm sure she gets a lot of email asking about the application process. Some profs have time to respond, but many do not. I wouldn't take it personally.
  11. This is either a bug, or you're clicking the wrong icon. (i'm not sure, there are some search-related bugs) When you search try clicking the arrow beside the post and see what happens?
  12. This is your 'avatar'. (I agree it's a little confusing). You go to your profile page, click "Edit my Profile" then use the "Change Avatar" page on the lefthand side of the screen.
  13. You hit multiquote to "tag" the posts you want to quote. Then at the very bottom of the thread is a button "Add Reply" (with the green arrow) which you must click.
  14. I had to check the old board to be sure...there was no section for this. Is one required?
  15. Fixed.
  16. Hi there, As far as I can tell: this is a plugin that you are installing on your computer for your own use. The option appears only with IE on Windows. It is not shipped with IP.Board and thus is not part of the commercial offering. You are welcome to install it. I'll see if there is a better/different spelling mod that applies to all browsers...
  17. I agree. I'll implement the fix as soon as they post it. For multi-quotes are you sure you used the "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the thread, as opposed to the in-post "Reply" button?
  18. OK - I wasn't being defensive, I just wasn't sure if you meant "functional" as in "plain and simple but the got the job done" or "had lots of functions which are now missing". Can you clarify your issue with the spell check thing? Is that something in your browser? Or some board feature I am unaware of? OK - thanks for the feedback. I'll keep an eye out for any modifications which restore this functionality!
  19. I've just done a bit of research. Looks like this is a "bug" with the current version of the s/w. It's marked as critical, so I expect a fix soon. I'm not sure how to interpret "not as functional"; it's certainly not so basic as the old s/w. Give it some time though. I'm happy to make changes so that we can all get along nicely with this new system!
  20. This should be fixed now. OK I added a couple more options. Let me know if that is sufficient!
  21. Toggle multiquote on the posts you wish to quote, then click the big "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the thread. As for the Legend - I'll see about adding it there to.
  22. The key/legend is at the bottom of any forum page, e.g. click and scroll to the bottom.
  23. Of course, I had to vote like that...
  24. This was unfortunate :-). I think I will remove all those birthdays, but I ask you all to update your profile! This new software has much better variety within the profiles... Yes - in the forum view, you'll see something like this. The icon at the start takes you to the first unread post in the thread. Bla bla - thread title here.
  25. That's a good observation ... . Hadn't thought about that!
