  1. I just received an acceptance e-mail from the University of Missouri - St. Louis. Is there anyone on here who is familiar with the department at UMSL, or has any information about their program? It was kind of a random choice for me when I applied but I'm intrigued by their placement record considering that they don't seem to get a lot of hype. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.
  2. I got the same line in my e-mail. I'm gonna take it as a compliment lol. Ultimately, I think that getting waitlisted is a meaningful gesture; it means you're what they're looking for, you and about a couple dozen others.
  3. Is there any kind of standard expectation when it comes to getting off of an M.A. waitlist? I was told that I was #3 at one of the schools I'd been waitlisted on. Are those good odds? Does anyone have a crazy waitlist story?
  4. Or an "implicit rejection," or whatever the term is. I don't think they would reject you without notifying you, at least not on purpose. An "implicit/silent" rejection is when acceptances and/or waitlists appear to have been sent out and you currently don't have either (meaning you will probably receive a rejection a few weeks down the line).
  5. Yeah, I always felt that Rawls and Nozick were having a tug of war with Kant. Some have even gone so far as to put him in a similar camp with Aristotle (Korsgaard). Personally, I'm somewhat critical of the whole project itself and have taken a more Aristotelian approach to political life (with the exception of slavery of course). Sounds like we have a lot of similar interests though. If I ever get off the waitlist at GSU, maybe we could talk more about it. I wasn't sure how I'd do considering that my work flies square in the face of what many are doing at GSU but it was encouraging to be waitlisted despite that fact.
  6. If worse came to worse, and it was the only offer you had (unfunded), the cost of living in Kalamazoo is a lot less than probably just about every other M.A. program worth applying to. Also, the grad students there have often been given various opportunities to earn more money (summer teaching/research positions, additional grading assignments, hired onto faculty grants etc..) Lastly, just keep your hopes up, a friend of mine did his M.A. there and he said they always end up digging into their waitlist. Also, they're cultivating an increasingly impressive placement record.
  7. I got the same at WMU too. Unfortunately, WMU (accepted) and GSU (currently waitlisted) have been the only schools - for me at least - to respond with anything. I'm still waiting on UW-Milwaukee, VT, UMSL, U Houston, and Simon Fraser. I saw Houston and Fraser make an appearance, so I might just have a silent rejection with those two. Congrats on your winning streak though. Maybe you could use some of that as funding leverage with Oxford if it came down to it.
  8. If you don't mind me asking, what was your funding offer at WMU?
  9. Oxford would be an awesome experience. I avoided applying to any M.A. schools that also ran Ph.D. programs because I always heard it was better to have a faculty that focuses exclusively on its M.A. students. I'm not sure how much that theory holds when it comes to somewhere like Oxford though. If they offered good funding, I'd probably go anyway.
  10. I saw somewhere that the person who initially received the legal/political scholarship declined, but that was like a week ago :/
  11. Did you get a good offer at Oxford? I regret not applying there, but I never actually looked at their funding either.
  12. Same here, but I stuck to M.A.'s this round. I just figured it would be unrealistic of me to even try to breach so many schools of that caliber without at least an M.A. or a letter of recommendation from Aristotle. Way to go, that's really inspiring. What was your sample on?
  13. Congrats! That is a really impressive list. Also, I noticed Simon Fraser on your list as well, are you just coming out of undergraduate school?
  14. I agree. I wouldn't even say that it has been "misused," so much as it has simply evolved like so many other concepts. Many American liberals, as affiliated with the Democratic party, can acknowledge that their values and policies differ from that of classical liberalism and its early proponents. Much of that shift can be characterized in the work of - like you said - Rawls and Kant (though I would also add Pettit as a major contemporary influence away from classical liberalism). All of them take some allegiance to liberalism in the broader sense, I just think it's a matter of how they choose to conceptualize and defend the notion of liberty, or freedom.
  15. Do you know if GSU gives that kind of assistantship to many people? I'm also on the waitlist but the prospective assistantship that I was informed of was pretty meager: 5k the first year and 10k the second.
  16. I was never under the impression that religion or language were the strong suits, maybe I missed those professors. From what I can tell, GSU is mainly a legal, political, moral program. It also has strengths in moral psychology and Nietzsche (Berry and Moore). We're talking about Georgia State, right?
  17. The same interests, actually. NIU seems to be an excellent department so I get it. If NIU gave you similar or better funding, do you think you would know at that point where you're going?
  18. lol. Well, I suppose I'm a little biased given my interests.
  19. What's your AOI? It seems to me that GSU would be worth attending regardless of the situation. GSU's funding does seem to be inferior to some of these other programs though.
  20. Same here. Brandeis is just too expensive, and I don't think the job prospects in this field are good enough to justify any further debt. Also, maybe I didn't read into it enough, but I'm not sure if Brandeis gives you the opportunity to teach, which for me, is something I want to have experience in before moving to a Ph.D. program.
  21. Hi, MtnDuck. Thank you for offering your advice. VT is the one school I'm largely in the dark with. How do you feel about VT's department when it comes to political/social/moral philosophy? I noticed you had an assistant professor working there who specializes in virtue ethics, which is a major focus of mine right now. Do you think the department is generally strong in these areas? Also, I have to admit that Blacksburg, at least initially, strikes me as the least appealing location among the others. I do like Appalachia though. How do you feel about Blacksburg?
  22. I probably won't be attending (especially if I have to work) because WMU is my undergraduate institution, so I'm relatively familiar with the school lol. Nevertheless, I was excited to get the acceptance because it's actually quite rare to get into the M.A. program as a WMU undergraduate, I've only seen it happen one other time. Also, my fiance was admitted as well, so it was especially surprising. That being said, let me know if you have any questions about their department.
  23. Same here! Accepted at WMU with full funding. However, there's a possibility I might decline. There's still no response from UWM, VT, or UMSL, and GSU has me waitlisted.
