readyset123 got a reaction from TigerMem in NYU vs Teachers College, Columbia: MA in Psychology
I also went to TC for my MA and one of the factors I can think of considering when deciding between TC and NYU is incoming class size. TC's incoming class size felt large at times, so if NYU has a smaller incoming class, that could be a pro for their program.
The previous posters are correct when it comes to freedom to research wherever you want to. I went to TC and did research there and at NYU and ultimately did my IP (kind of like your thesis to graduate) with an NYU lab.
I liked that TC was fairly unstructured. They don't tell you which courses you have to take, however, that means if you are planning on a PhD in the future, you'll want to plan your courses accordingly. They don't make you take stats, but a PhD program will want you to have taken it. If that makes sense? There are grad student advisors that you can meet with to discuss what courses would be good to take for your future plans. They're usually really helpful. Faculty are also good resources for that, but they tend to not be as up to date on requirements. They know what they look for in a grad student but not necessarily what the field in general has moved to. I think this program is a very good example of something being what you make it. If you are proactive and organized, then you'll do great here. If you're looking for a more structured environment, you may want to consider NYU (if they possess that quality).
If you want to research with a faculty member at TC (counseling or clinical) I would suggest contacting them and expressing your interest and then seeking them out very soon after the semester begins. You want to start research as soon as possible and a lot of the labs fill up quickly the first semester. Or, find research opportunities outside of TC as soon as possible. The longer you are working with a lab, the more likely you are to have presentation and publication opportunities.
Just a side note about financials: they offer scholarships the first year but generally speaking those scholarships do not carry over into the second year. So unless your financial award explicitly states it is for multiple years, it's probably only for your first year.

readyset123 got a reaction from TheEternalGrad in Part Time vs Full Time student at Columbia for MA in psych in education
I did my MA at TC and I know the credit requirements make it appear you could be done in a year, however, if you're working at all during the program, an active member of a research lab (putting in the time to publish and present), trying to get in to specific sections of classes, etc., it's actually not super common to finish in a year. There were two people that did that I know of in the last few years and they went full time during the summer and started their IP (your thesis-esque project) their first semester in order to graduate that quickly. And it was still difficult for them to do it. Each one of them did it because they had extenuating circumstances and needed to, however, it's definitely not very common. Most people who start in Fall 2019 would finish in Spring 2021. So it's about 1.5 years.

Anyone still waiting and hoping to get off the waitlist for their top choice? Very nerve-wrecking since we're just shy of 1 week away from the deadline. Best of luck to everyone!

I was waitlisted at my top program and they didn't give a ranking but said the waitlist is short and my chances of getting in were "quite strong." Of course I have no idea what that means, numbers wise, but it was reassuring to hear he thought the odds were good. It's just so stressful to have to keep up the waiting game! He said he thought for a few weeks but it could be as long as April 15th!! Anyways, just wanted to commiserate with people who understood the pain!

Has anyone heard from St. John's for Clinical Psych PhD? They said we were supposed to hear Monday, 3/11 but there has only been one post on the results page.
Also wondering if anyone has any info. on CUNY City College waitlist? Has there been any movement? Is anyone planning to accept/decline?
Thanks so much! Pretty sure everyone I know would be sick of hearing about grad school by now if it weren't for me having this forum as an outlet ?

I got an email after business hours yesterday that my application was incomplete (the portal didn't reflect this). I called right when they opened this morning and talked with admissions. They said they think my official GRE scores were not attached because I was recently married and changed my name. They said they can't forward the application to the department until all of the materials are submitted and would email their documents department to get it straightened out, but everyone is on break now. This is a school that some have posted interview invites  from and their website says they send out invites in December for January interviews. My question is, should I email the POI and tell her the situation? We exchanged a few emails in early Fall and she was nice and encouraged me to apply. Any thoughts/ideas/opinions?
