  1. Hello! I recently began a practicum in a primary school for children ages 3-6. Most of these children have developmental delays in addition to speech/language goals. My graduate program requires us to complete a single-subject research design project and I need some help thinking of ideas! I would like to avoid doing a project on articulation if possible unless someone has a great idea, but does anyone have any good ideas on what I could research? I need to come up with a research question/statement by next week. Thanks!
  2. I will be graduating in 2 semesters and am planning to begin my CF in a school. The school year is 180 days (36 weeks) working 7 hour days. Working every single day for the 7 hours would give me the exact minimum hours required for a CF (1260). How do sick days factor into these hours? If I missed one day during the year and the hours don't count, would I just not be able to finish my CF until the following school year?
  3. Unfortunately it has not gotten any better. Most days it feels like it has gotten worse and I am more stressed and anxious than ever. I still have 4 weeks left to go and I'm dreading every second of it. My supervisor was clearly not ready to have a student but I unfortunately got stuck with her. I have spoken with my school several times and they shut down all of my concerns every time. I still regret not dropping the practicum since it has made the last 7 weeks complete hell, but at this point with only 4 weeks left it'd be silly to drop it. I am 100% disappointed in my experience and the way my school has handled my concerns.
  4. Hey guys! Just looking for any great ideas you all might have. I am currently doing one of my practicum placements and the site requires students to do a project on the topic of their choice. You can research a topic to present or develop a tool for them to use at the center. I have chosen to develop a tool. I will be creating a type of adaptation for the Goldman-Fristoe 2 that allows clinicians to better assess children who speak Spanish or African American English. Since these languages may be responsible for some English errors a child has, my project will show what substitutions would be appropriate for Spanish or African American English speakers so that certain "errors" are not counted against them. Does anybody have any ideas on how to really enhance this project rather than just basically listing all of the sounds that are appropriate? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!
  5. Hey guys! So I just had my midterm evaluation where my school supervisor came to observe some of my sessions and then she and my site supervisor came up with a list of strengths and weaknesses. My skills during the session were all rated great but I thought some of the weaknesses were a little ridiculous. For example, one weakness was that I don't ask enough questions. I have explained that this is just who I am as a person and have always been that way. I have never been someone who asks many questions. I learn by observing and then actually doing it myself. When I do have questions though, I do not hesitate to ask. I have also been working in the field a little longer than my supervisor has since I worked as an SLA for 4 years before I started my practicum experience and she is a newer SLP. I feel as though that job really prepared me for this. Anyway, my supervisor told me that I am now required to ask at least one question per day pertaining to a previous session. I honestly rarely have questions about the sessions because I feel like I completely understand everything we are doing. It is early intervention so it is not too difficult. I am struggling with coming up with questions and don't want to look dumb or unprepared if I ask a question that I should know or ask a question that I do know just for the sake of asking a question. This is so ridiculous and something I do not need to waste time stressing over! I was hoping you guys could help come up with some questions for me. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  6. Hey guys! Just wondering if anyone can relate to my experience or can offer any helpful advice. I began my SLP practicum working with kids ages birth-3 in First Steps, so I travel around to client's houses all day. My supervisor has made it very clear that this job is her life and schedules herself 11-12 hour days (sometimes longer) Monday through Friday. I am typically gone from 7am til 7-8pm or later. I think these hours are ridiculous....especially for a first time practicum student, but I am required to work the same hours as my supervisor. We are also going into some extremely dangerous neighborhoods and I often feel very unsafe. I was told by my school that they won't change my hours since she is directly treating clients for 40 hours per week (apparently it doesn't matter that we are actually working for 60 hours!!). They also won't allow me to decide whether or not I go to those dangerous neighborhoods (although my supervisor picked up these clients because the other SLPs refused to go to these areas). Any advice on how to get through this? It's only been one week and I've come home crying every day and I'm completely overwhelmed. I constantly feel anxious and am not sleeping well either anymore. These hours aren't typical are they? This has really killed my desire to be in the field. 10 more weeks to go...
