You're a gift from god, thanks for the info! Let the nail-biting commence.

??? Thanks for the update! Do you know if they'll just send acceptances out first and then keep the rejected ones waiting til March/April?

I feel that so much. I'm now waiting for the rejections to come quick so I can start planning for 2020. Or maybe take a little break and go at it over summer.

That sucks, I'm sorry! Yeah it probably would be the same field an offer was declined in, but who's to say that's not going to be your field?! Also, I've no idea how rejections work but lots of Yale ones have gone out (if the results page is to be trusted), but you haven't yet got one. It might mean nothing, but it also might mean they're still considering your application!

Oh no! Have you thought about logging off your emails for a day? I got my rejection email on my Mum's birthday (Friday), she came to visit me for the weekend and I was really listless all through the time we were meant to be celebrating. It sucked -- and it wasn't even my bday.

I think there's always a chance because the top choice applicants are likely to apply to all unis, get accepted in several, and then inevitably need to turn all but one offers down. It might not be the most likely outcome, but it's a possibility. Chin up Edit: Also, did you guys see the new NYU acceptance on the results page! They're really keeping us on their toes, aren't they? Though both of the accepted applicants were notified on 7th Feb so maybe their results are out but a very small cohort and not many of them gradcafe obsessed?

It's not decided until you've got an actual rejection! Got my fingers crossed for you. ❤️

NYU is the wildcard now. Cornell's deadline was later so I'm prepared to wait, Penn's probably finished their interviews, Duke usually sends their rejections out on Thursday in V-day week. . . I know NYU send decisions out advisor by advisor, but little else. Didn't they release waitlist results or something on Monday last week? Big hugs to everyone waiting! I know I could use one.
  9. I've got my contingency plans all ready! If not a PhD now (which I might not be ready for, admittedly), I'm applying to MAs; deadlines can be as late as a month before the course starts here in the UK, so I can apply to weaker ones after I get rejected from better programmes (meaning less and more spaced out applications). If all else fails, I'll definitely have a place at my BA institution. And I'm fully prepared to apply for PhDs in America next year! Having a solid plan B before any results came out gave me the belief I'd be at peace with rejections. Reality is uglier! Thank you for your very considerate words & encouragement! I really really appreciate it!❤️
  10. I thought I'd feel really good once I got a response from anywhere. I was fine for the evening after I found out, shrugged it off, nbd, but now I'm just sad and feeling empty. This sucks. Realistically and rationally, I was expecting this; I thought I was prepared for a wave of rejections after I didn't get any interviews but obviously, I'm actually gonna need to learn how to process this stuff. I don't even want the chocolate I've stockpiled in my room, specifically for this occasion. : /
  11. [EDIT: This is a later thread that has been merged with the existing one - Telk (3/3/19)] Hi historians! I was hoping we could get a thread going (before all the ones who got acceptances leave this forum because they're you're busy with actually getting ready for grad school!) with advice for those who are applying next year. I know I've learned a lot from applying this cycle and it'd be great to hear what others have! I would tell past me to get started so much earlier! I decided to apply in September, but only started working on applications in November. Not only did it mean I had to choose programmes not according to fit but by their deadlines. Then I was picking programmes, studying for the GRE, writing my SoP, writing a Writing Sample from scratch, and asking for recommendations all at once (not to mention working, volunteering, and dealing with senior year stuff -- the worst I had it was driving two hours for the GRE at 8am, getting back at 7pm and writing an essay that was 100% of a module grade at 8pm, due the next morning. . .) It also meant I never got to chat with POIs, which would've been so helpful--not many got back to me when I emailed them two or three weeks before app deadlines; in retrospect, I imagine emailing them that late hurt my case more than it helped it. Would love to hear everyone else's lessons learned--and congrats to everyone who have been admitted already!

@Taorluath34 @hahahahaleigh Yale rejection support group / group hug?

That's what I was thinking too! Also, regarding emailing professors: current students may correct me if I'm wrong, but that sounds like building a connection that might end up being really useful, given you're going to attend a grad school next year? I'm pretty sure that most, if not all people (even busy ones) appreciate gratefulness

Would POIs ever email personalised rejections even if you haven't had prior contact? Or is that a thing POIs will do for the students who they've already established a relationship with? I've seen rejections via email by POIs, so just wondering.
  15. This is me with 4/6 of my applications. The last two had late deadlines, so not hearing back yet. aaaaaaaaaahh!!!!!

They send acceptances in a batch, this was a few weeks back. In previous years, rejections have come, also in a batch, on Friday next week (the 15th). I'm assuming they send these out as it's a week before their accepted students' visit weekend and they'll have their cohort ready then.

I've started using 24 hour sets of SelfControl (an app that blocks any website you choose for a specified time--even if you restart the computer, go on incognito, etc) on this website, on my laptop. I'm too lazy to use my (very slow) phone, so I can either check this site every 24 hours, or at work. I'm actually able to focus on uni again, for the first time in a month. 10/10, would recommend to anyone.

We're in the same boat! NYU was so different from the others I applied to in terms of the personal essay and no GRE requirement, I thought it might be a game changer. My guess is that the first wave was out last week and this waitlist one today was the second, but hugs to you, we'll make it through!

Might only have found out they were waitlisted because they contacted NYU directly in previous years? In other news, I just got a phone call (and this never happens, no one ever calls me) and I freaked out so much; just a telemarketer. Yet I'm still shaking

I'm waiting on NYU too -- I was really hoping to get on their waitlist, lol. Today's gonna be a long day. Congrats! I think--hope you get off the waitlist!

Ah okay, cool cool. No doubt no doubt. Nice. @daradara I'm not sure if that's true -- like I know that Duke sent out their acceptances already but since I've not got an official rejection, I'm still holding on to (false) hope. Even if good news are realistically never going to come by this point.

I oscillate between finding mornings the only time I can relax and being super anxious. Usually the latter, ngl. Ah, any chance you know if everyone under consideration are interviewed? Hope your interview went really well!
  23. I can't believe that after 74 days of January, it's actually February. And it's the weekend again, at which my body usually chills out a little and only types gradcafe in the address bar twice a day. I really hope we'll all start hearing some (good) news soon!
