  1. I popped my 'check the admissions portal just in case they decided but didn't email yet' cherry today. It's the actual worst; I would love a notification right now. Of any kind. But I'm also not ready to get rejected. What a vicious circle haha.

I'm so proud of you @urbanhistorynerd and @historygeek!!!! Your weekend's gonna be amazing; may these be the first of many admits!

Oh cool! I applied to Kent for undergrad, and Oxford for the MSt (I'm in only in third year now!) I think my Oxford result is going to come out before the Cambridge MPhil deadline so I'll go for that if I don't get in. Back-up is Leeds, and if all else fails, I'll be staying in York (my BA). MA deadlines are so late here, meaning I can just apply after I find out about the other places, which is great! I'm already mentally preparing for the 2020 application cycle for the PhD though

Hello!! I'm from the UK too! As far as I know (from the wiser in this thread, and my Yale-educated advisor at my undergrad), results come out whenever, so best not to worry/think about it. NYU releases them by advisor all the way to March, if not later, and Penn has sent out some interviews but no idea what's going on there. Where did you apply in the UK (if you're ok saying? PM is fine!) I've no idea about Georgetown's History programme, but I was on their campus this summer and it's sick. DC in general is incredible. Their deadline was too late for me, otherwise I would've seriously considered applying, it's just so nice. Good luck!

I saw that on the results page and was thinking of you! Hope you're doing ok -- you're gonna get to visit Duke really soon! ❤️
  7. "Who do you think you are?" is my favourite quote from the ones above - but look at this gem:
  8. I always kinda expected for that to happen!! Like, once you hear from one, you know it's real, you actually applied, you've had some type of interaction with a programme from their side. I feel like I'm bound to hear from one school sometime soon, they can't all 5 leave me waiting until March, can they?! Only one of mine hasn't started releasing decisions so. . .soon? Damn I hope so. On another note, every Thursday for the past few weeks I've seen lots of decisions go out! Might be wishful thinking, but I'm banking on hearing something this time next week.

Congrats!! And to everyone else too who's received the Good News today!! I've noticed Thursdays are especially popular for results, but I'm with you @historygeek with the radio silence. Hope you get some admits very soon!
  10. I'll bet anything that if (once!) you DO get an acceptance, all of that will fade away. Good luck!! I think about it so much!!! I understand that their priority is securing the students they really want to attend and not losing them to other programmes, but I wish they'd just have mercy on the bottom of the pile. Where I increasingly feel like I belong.

There's actually two posts about NYU History -- but @OHSP said they send them out by advisor, so all it means is that it's started -- we won't know when it's finished. Also, tomorrow is February?! I feel like we've all earned a pint. If it does actually come. I feel like I'm in Groundhog Day, but it's really Groundhog Month; I swear I've lived through Jan 25th twice this year.
  12. All the days in January have been the longest, it's insane!
  13. Big mood. I started applying way too late so missed out on all the Dec 1st deadline programmes, and some of them would've been better fits than the ones I did end up applying to. Also, every morning I wake up and think, ah! this is a nice day! im not gonna ruin it by going on gradcafe! and yet, as if by no action of my own, it's the first thing I look at. Then I convince myself that there's no point to check again until the evening at least. But by the evening, I'll have refreshed it enough times I memorise all the results for 'history' - including unis I didn't even apply to/look at. lol.

That's actually pretty hilarious. @OHSP thanks for sharing! That's really helpful, I'm going to try to pipe down and commit to the wait. It's nice to hear someone else having gone through it with the same programmes. Do you mind saying (even via PM) if you ended up in any of those schools?

However: is it possible you're still in the running for a school if it does send out some interview requests? Idk but it seems unlikely to me that if there are Applicant A and Applicant B, that they would interview Person A before admitting Person B without any interviews? Surely the first round of emails would go out to those they're so confident about they're willing to accept them without interviews, not to those who they want to interview first?
  16. Hahahahaahaahhaaaa -- thanks for this, this made my day! I hope you get in! I'm worried about telling my supervisor/mentor about getting rejected from everywhere -- I've got two implied rejections, and the other three had later dates/ haven't started reviewing apps yet. I'm also worried I'll fail my final year of undergrad because I'm completely off focus ever since I saw the first History update for a uni on the results page.

Yeah I'm with you all on the anxious wait from Duke. I looked at the past few years and looks like acceptances go out over one or two days and rejections in late Feb/early March. At the start of this application process, I really believed I was going to be more chill about the waiting, but I think I'm going to be on edge until March or whenever the official rejection comes (even if I wholeheartedly trust @OHSP saying acceptances were sent out at the same time). I'm sure this waiting process is a violation of the Geneva convention. Somehow. Hello! I didn't apply to USC but we have very similar research interests -- may I ask where else did you apply?

One of the programmes I applied to had a little comment on their website about the lack academic of jobs and that applicants should be aware they might end up doing something other than TT uni jobs. From there, it seemed to me that you could realistically pursue other things too (e.g. public history jobs, government, thinktanks, etc). But I guess these aren't the type of people programmes really want to fund?

I don't know how to feel about these cuts. It'll be easier to accept a rejection with this in mind, but also, hot damn, cutting half a cohort? From 20 to 6? I knew a humanities PhD wasn't the safest aspiration when getting into this, but by 2020, will there even be new cohorts? By what time are people going to stop applying because admission rates will be down to 0.5%?

Ah, the stories from people who get their Dec deadline rejection in August are the worst, that must be terrible!
  21. I emailed two people and both got back to me really quickly! I only reached out if it was on the website that they had the advisor I was interested in and/or were doing a similar history to what I want to do. I just asked a couple questions about how they like it, what the faculty were like and kept it as short as I could. The best thing I got out of it was enthusiasm--I emailed one or two weeks before app deadlines, insanely stressed and tired, but hearing about their positive experiences gave me the final push to finish my SOPs. I wasn't really expecting an answer, but they were both really happy to have a chat with me, which was super nice!

I'm actually losing it with the whole 'waiting it out' thing. I thought I'd surely get rejected from at least one place by now, but that doesn't seem to be happening. I was so at peace with probably getting rejected from everywhere when I submitted, but the longer I wait the more I think ahhh! No news must be good news, I'm still in the running -- but then, History results are so far and few inbetween on this hellsite's results page that it's a false sense of security, probably. I feel like getting one rejection would give me an understanding of how it's going to affect me (am I going to need a week in bed to mourn? Am I gonna need two pints and then be ok? Am I gonna need alone time, or friend time?) so I'm just constantly on edge. anyway - how is everyone else getting along?

I did single-spaced too. My thought is that if they really cared that it's double-spaced, they would have specified that. US 20th century/African American -- for Cornell, put lots of emphasis on the latter because of how strong their African history department is. You'd be in for a treat there I think!

    Applications 2019

Ah! Same! Cornell is my last app (out of 5) and the more I read my SoP the more I think all this was a great mistake and that I'm wasting everyone's time. Ugh. Anyway!! I didn't contact any POIs, but I know they 'strongly recommend' it -- am I fucked? Did you contact them?
  25. Oh wow congrats! Give it a day, you might get an email in a few hours, could just be a delay - if you don't hear anything by tomorrow, maybe give them a call.
