  1. Thanks for this. Sadly, I am super young to be entering a PhD program, and won't be 24 till 2021. I don't want to delay my starting grad school for 2 more years, so I'm not sure how this going to work. There is a bit of confusion though: so apparently when taking the standard deduction, scholarships count as earned income? So while scholarships count as unearned income for the kiddie tax, I should be able to take the full standard deduction from my stipend (which is more like 12,000) and then only pay kiddie tax on the remaining part? Another little question: the Form 8516 for Kiddie Tax refers to the person as a "child". However, I do not fit the IRS's definition of a "qualifying child", so how is that lack of consistency in language okay? Is there any way to get around it because of this lack of clear language that clearly does not follow their own definitions?
  2. Sadly, it's a bit more complicated then that. The IRS says I qualify if I am " A full-time student at least age 19 and under age 24 at the end of 2018 and didn’t have earned income that was more than half of your support." So it's "earned income" that must exceed half the support. The fellowship is my entire support. And the fellowship is not considered earned income by the IRS, since I don't get a W2 form. So even though the fellowship is my only money to live off of it doesn't matter.
  3. Hey all, I was lucky enough to receive a pretty large stipend for the next couple years. However, I seemed to run into a huge issue that will significantly ruin my income: the Kiddie Tax. Since I am under 24 and a full time student, and fellowships are considered "unearned income" for kiddie tax purposes, my fellowship will be taxed at a whooping 37%. I'm not even a dependent on my parent's tax forms!!! Has anyone else considered this/gotten out of this? I can't afford to pay 37% tax. Thanks!
  4. I think I just saw a BU interview on the results section... oh well I kind of lost hope a couple weeks ago. Best of luck to all the BU applicants!
  5. Does anyone have any advice for interviews when I'm switching fields ? (I don't know a ton of neuro, but I have a very strong math background). I'm interviewing at a neuro program in a couple weeks and sadly unlike @HawaiiLee808 do not have 7 years of neuro experience (that is so impressive!!!!!). I'm getting a bit nervous since obviously the admissions committee saw what classes I took/my experience is not in neurobio so I'm kinda lost how I should deal with an interview if it as scary/disheartening as I have been hearing!
  6. Not super surprised that it is taking forever since they apparently got over 500 applications this year yikes
  7. Anyone heard from BU GPN yet? I know they like to release really late and also got over 500 applicants this year but it's starting to get get quite late in the app season... Thanks!
  8. Just out of curiosity, I'm a bit uninformed about the neuro community: what are the top ten neuro programs? I'd assume Harvard, MIT, and Stanford but honestly what are the other ones? Trying to figure out which ones have the most competitive applications so that I avoid them for applying again next year?
  9. Yeah I got a call from POI, and then an email with details sent from POI about 15 minutes after.
  10. Thanks for the help on the missed call everyone! They called back and indeed offered an interview.? high key shocked as I've never taken a formal neuro course and am still in undergrad, studying applied math (thesis work in comp neuro)
  11. Help!!! What happens if you miss a phone call for an interview offer! I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I just missed a phone call from New Haven. Conicendently, I applied to Yale Neuro and did not think I would get an interview! Not sure if this was Yale, but weird timing since I know Yale is releasing interviews today. But no voicemail... Any thoughts?
  12. Yeah I think that might have been it... it seems like a really small program. Just sad since on the website they seemed to encourage the idea that the program is primarily for people with quant backgrounds (math, cs, physics) to learn to apply their field to comp neuro. As someone who wants to switch to comp neuro from applied math, I think that it might have been so competitive they wanted people with double majors (in neuro and in a quant field) and comp neuro lab experience. Oh well.
  13. Looks like Carnegie Mellon PNC started releasing.... ? was my favorite program but I guess I'll have to let that go. Congrats to the others who got interviews!
  14. Waiting for them too! Maybe they just won't send interviews till january... I haven't heard of anyone hearing back from them yet.
  15. Hey all! Anyone heard from Carnegie Mellon PNC (Program in Neural Computation)? The results have very varied dates for when people got interview invitations in the past years.
