Congrats to everyone in! Can I ask everyone that got in if they got similar funding? My package says approx 94k. I've heard they sometimes give more so if you're one of them extra congrats!
-
Yeah, really nondescriptive email made me nervous
-
Got a Duke decision, complete with financial aid
-
Funding specifically won't come for a couple weeks. Vanderbilt is about equivalently ranked with UNC (especially for an Americanist) but gives about 10k more per year in funding. Only they can make the decision, but I think it makes sense to wait until they have more information.
-
Idk about Wisconsin, but Princeton hasn't been a full week yet.
-
Princeton American acceptances are already out. Waiting on NYU and UCSD and those should hopefully be soon.
-
Hey I hate to go against the grain here but I'd really recommend against pulling out of all other schools before you know definitively about funding, especially if Vanderbilt is at play (because it's a $$$ private school with money to give out). You never know if you'll be able to leverage it to get a better stipend, or if some other unexpected stuff happens.

Congrats! The admissions process is weird and illogical at times but I'm sure UNC has a reason that they want you
-
I can confirm this, at least for American. Very personalized email (at least for me) so it may take some time.
-
Congrats! Out of sheer curiosity (I neither am in IR nor applied to Brown), did your email have any indication of the # of people admitted, as the theory email apparently did?
-
Last year was Feb 12 (excluding those with connections), but now that I look into it historically it's usually the first full week of February (around the 2-7th ish). I wouldn't be surprised if those came out this week too.
-
Princeton unofficial (and by that I mean pretty official, but just form the department instead of the grad school) notifications have gone out to at least American, CP, and IR. Not sure if theory had gone out or not, but I'd say it's more likely that it has than it hasn't.

Because all I'm capable of thinking about at this point is admissions, and last week wasn't as full as I had anticipated, here is a list of some schools that we're expected to hear about within the next week, It looks like it's gonna be big. Schools that according to last year we should've heard from by now: Emory -- looks like 2 waves of rejections have gone out so far, but no interviews or acceptances yet (typically first full week of Feb) Northwestern (if there's anything left)? Penn State (usually out by now but has taken as long as to Feb 9) Duke (came approx Feb 6 in 2017 so I'll be really surprised if there's nothing soon) UC Davis (Came late Jan both 2018 and 17) NYU (almost always 1st week of Feb) UCSD (almost always 1st week of Feb) Schools that came out in the first (full) week of February last year: UCLA (almost always 1st week of Feb) Michigan (usually around Feb 10-13 but has been as late as Feb 17) WashU St Louis (has been as late as Feb 14, but usually around Feb 7) UNC (some have gone out already, so I'm fairly confident these will be out this week)

I feel the same way, but also throwing Duke, Emory, and NYU to the list. Last year's applicants had it good ?
-
Yeah, at this point it's even getting late in the west coast. We probably won't hear from anyone until Monday unless it's just one of those automatic portal refreshes. You bet if I were a political science administrative person you bet at 3pm I'm gonna just save the emails for Monday instead of trying to cram them all in within the next 2 hours.
-
Good to know. Congrats! Also were you the call and email both? I saw there's one of each.
-
Anyone claiming UNC acceptance?
-
Also there's another Emory rejection dated for today...I wonder if there's another round of rejections going out (or if this person was just late posting about the first round)
-
Did anything happen or are you just asking generally?
-
You're right it'll definitely take a lot to really ruin Wisconsin, but I know they face some problems that other top tier publics don't often have. For example, their stipends, even though Madison is cheaper than most big city colleges, I've not competitive at all with most peer schools. The faculty is indeed excellent, which is why they're still successful despite some money issues and a nutty past governor.

This one I think is a little better, I think it's the same data (so obviously same problems) but let's you trace dates. I can't believe so many people do data projects with this data. Makes me want to try it out too haha https://fretpwner.shinyapps.io/GradCafeStatistics/

Assuming they're using gradcafe data, just remember that that data is largely skewed, both in good ways and bad ways for us: The good: I'm pretty sure those scores are almost universally higher across the board than in reality. It's a little bit of a jump to go from admitted to matriculated students stats, but if you look at Dukes website from the past five years, matriculated verbal is a median of 163 (and remember this is a theory heavy program) and math is 161. This contrasts SO SO SHARPLY against this data, which says virtually everyone accepted has over a 163 quant (and anything below that is an outlier) and median verbal is 166, with 163 being the lower 25%. So, if your scores seem a little low relative to your target schools, do not worry, we have some severe reporting biases here. The bad: looking at the acceptance rates here just doesn't work. Again, building off of Duke data, where they admit 10-13% each year, the data here reports about a 40% chance of admittance. I've found this also applies for northwestern and Princeton, which we have an idea of what admission rates are. Oddly enough, for each of these, if you divide the gradcafe admission rate by approx 3, you get pretty close to the real thing. The timelines are also hard to read and get an accurate approximate date idk this guy should've made a shiny app or something.

Sort of related, and this is something that this discussion has made me think about, is that maybe part of the problem is how much we stress the idea of "fit" with a department. I'd be surprised if a lot of what your advisor seems to resent is the types that get into places like Madison and also Stanford, and goes to both visits. Maybe there is some wrongdoing on the students side when it seems obvious from afar that they're going to choose Stanford, but I also feel like a lot of them might be trying to give the Madison type a genuine chance before they really crunch the numbers and really realize that Stanford is almost unilaterally a better choice (and maybe it's largely because of the probably apparent difference in resources of a rich private school vs a school that the state is desperate to weaken).

Can you say/pm me which schools were involved? It'd be helpful to know which of my potential schools are open to it
