  1. How are you guys declining your acceptances? Are you emailing the people you interviewed with as well and thanking them for their time? I am unsure of the proper etiquette

I want to decline at least a few this week to open up spots for people on waitlists. However, I am not sure if emailing all POIs is overkill. I definitely want to keep the connections I made open.

Just heard from the Oxford Wellcome Trust 4-year Programme today! I'm interviewing on Jan. 31. It'll be a 10-minute presentation about my research, followed by 20 minutes of discussion with a panel of faculty. They will reimburse me up to £500 in travel expenses to and from the UK.

Aaaaahhh, I'm so excited!!! This is my dream program!

Congratulations! Have you or anyone else heard the final results of the interview yet? I also interviewed on Friday. They told me that they would be making decisions that evening, but I haven't heard anything yet. Wondering if that means I didn't make it...

Hey! I was just going through all the messages and read this. This is not true at all! I got interviews a top programs such as UMich, Columbia and Duke AND I am international (which makes it 100x harder). My GPA is 3.3 but it is from Pharmacy school, so that helps I guess. My GRE is okay but not amazing, around the 75th percentile. It is my first time applying. THERE. IS. HOPE.

It’s definitely not entirely true :) my gpa is equally low and I also got interviews from several of the top places.

however, I also know for a fact that there were gpa cutoffs at certain programs this year. If you didn’t make that mark then your application wasn’t sent forward for review.

I only say this for future reference for people because I wish I had focused more on my gpa myself.

there’s definitely still hope for everyone though! :)

Just got invited to Stanford! It was a phone call so keep your phone nearby if you’re waiting :)

    Congrats maya! :)

Do you know if they’re sending more and did you get an official email? Also if you don’t mind, would you mind sharing the range of your gpa? I’be heard most programs are doing gpa cutoffs this year

being international definitely doesn't help and it's also not something you can really change.

So they claim that they are looking for people with the capacity to do really great research so having good letters of recommendations from a top lab, publications, extensive research etc really helps. However, I learned this year that that alone will not get you into the top programs. Unfortunately it seems like a lot of programs do have GPA cutoffs and with a subpar GRE such as myself that's not great.

I think that the applicant most likely to get in already has top grades - if you look at the profiles on people at gradschool cafe I notice that almost everyone getting interviews has a 3.7-3.8 and great GREs. I thought that this wouldn't necessarily be the case, but it seems like it is. It's probably this and then a connection to a lab at the institution

Getting a really high GRE will automatically pull up your grades, I wish I had spent more time on that now

Perhaps I just don't really know what grad schools want in an applicant. I'm also an international student which has consistently hurt my chances in the past. I appreciate the encouraging words though. With a 2-5% acceptance rate, I probably should have just kept my money in my wallet haha

This is what I needed to hear. I worked very hard through undergrad to try and avoid taking time before my grad program, but it seems like I can't avoid it now

I know very few people straight from undergrad in neuro phd programs - I know people in other fields but not in neuro.

Also, if you look at the profiles of current phd students at the top programs, almost nobody is straight from undergrad - there's usually only one

Thanks for the words of encouragement,  but if I'm being honest I think this will likely be my last time applying for further education. I've really done all I can do to improve my application at this point (aside from building a time travel device to fix the mistakes of my youth). If it's meant to (or not meant to) be then such is life.

I wouldn't lose hope! From what I have heard of very few people from undergrad get directly into phd programs nowadays. also if you're not in undergrad, I'd say the same. It seems like most programs have a 2-5% acceptance rate especially this year with more applications being sent in. There is definitely more people not hearing back then people hearing back.

For example, one of my grad student supervisors in my lab in undergrad got rejected from all phd programs the first time - the next time he was somehow accepted to all of them and choose to go to a top 3 program

  9. Columbia just sent out an email for its first interview weekend and there are 29 applicants on the list. I know they have another interview weekend as well so I estimate that they are interviewing around 60 people. That's quite a lot, on their website their seem to be about 20 people a year. This is only a 30% chance approximately.

Do you know if they are accounting for people to turn down their offer? I'm wondering if it's like close to 50% for being accepted? I'm just really worried as it is one of my top choices and people were saying that if you receive an interview than you're pretty much in. Statistically it doesn't seem like it though

Hey, I received a Stanford invite for Dev Bio yesterday, but the home programs all run on their own schedule. I don't even think Dev Bio is done sending invites honestly. Don't get freaked out because a few people heard - looking at the results page it seems like a small number trickle in around this time but then the vast majority of biosciences invites go out around Jan 10.

Okay, thank you for letting me know! And congratulations on all of your interviews!!

    :)

  11. Thank you for submitting your application to the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT. We are currently processing application materials and appreciate your patience. Due to the large amount of admissions materials, it may take up to four weeks to complete our initial sort.

Applications will remain under review through the months of December and January. Once all materials have been sorted, we will begin sending official interview invitations to selected candidates. Interview will take place on March 7 and 8, 2019 and will be by invitation only. Post-interview decisions will be sent in mid-March and final decisions will be sent in late March.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time.

    Graduate Admissions Committee

Does this email seem to indicate being put on a waitlist then? Apparently some people have already gotten interview notification invites & rejections...
