  1. Hey everyone. So I just started my math camp for my PhD program in American and it has not gone well for me. It's going utterly fast and the course seems disorganized (people have suggested to me online to look at the readings--there aren't any) and I stopped at trig in high school and a GE stats course in undergrad so the intense pace of going from basic algebraic concepts that i've long forgotten and have to pause to come up with to pre calc that i've not taken to calculus has overwhelmed me, and even, felt like sitting through a Swahili course. The grad students teaching it have seemed kind of icy and cursory when I ask for help and I feel like a math-deficient idiot, because I'm just not good at it and feel years behind. I'm sure things can change but I'm having tremendous doubts about why I got in and if my record and lack of math (my GRE score did very much reflect it) was seriously looked at, looking at a sink hole of time and money to even keep a C or D in my stats course next term, or possibly future courses I'll have to take. Working hard at this on my own can resort to me staring at a sheet getting lost, and I am almost scared to ask the department for help and feel embarrassed and like i'll be looked down upon. We have a quiz at the end of the week to see how we're doing and if we need more help. I just want some honest perspectives and if there's anything I can do or a good gameplan. Khan Academy and a few office hours doesn't seem sufficient right now.
  2. What are Open House events, quickly speaking? I just accepted an offer, so I take it that my department is probably still scrambling to figure who all is coming, waitlist, etc. until this week, and haven't heard much follow up other than the congrats, glad to hear, etc.
  3. American. Wonder what happened in the last three weeks for this error to happen and go unnoticed and then get reported now...
  4. So what should we do with this? We’ve already waited about 2-3 weeks unofficially then, how much longer do these things typically take to get decided upon? Do we get a shot at a visit
  5. Any more detail on TAMU acceptances/waitlists? I'm an Americanist, haven't heard anything.
  6. Virginia. I was initially informed of rejection, but apparently that was in error. I got in at Wisconsin, which is a terrific program, and I'm looking forward to the visit, but UVA also looks great for me, with awesome folks like Milkis, Ceasar, Sabato, etc. and a qualitative/historical focus, but the timeframe is putting a strain on it. Thanks!
  7. Does anyone know what to expect of a waitlist, the timeframe for it, or how to handle it? Do visits still happen in that event? Just got an unexpected waitlist.
  8. Any feeling on when TAMU and Vanderbilt should be out?
  9. Any more information from the TAMU acceptance? Any other TAMU people get word?
  10. Rice is ranked at 33. (WashU is ranked 19, Vanderbilt is ranked 24, and ND is ranked 37)Their website kind of hides their grad students (no subfield available), which worried me, as did their placement. Not sure how they are for American, but they had some decent people. I am looking for a place where I can do some more historical/qualitative work.
  11. Wait, really, they are accepting people on the date they have to notify programs by? Crazy. And some of the graduate schools/deans have insane policies, wherein they make them make their initial offers and hold out for forever until they hear back before they can send out waitlists or more acceptances. But it is ridiculous, a decent number of my schools are holding out with radio silence. Will Vanderbilt still be doing some interviews next week or if I didn't hear from them, is it RIP for me?
  12. Does anyone know anything about the quality/strength (s) of Rice's program? And damn it, TAMU and UC Davis are dragging their feet!
  13. Does anyone have any feel for what the best qualitative programs are? How would Wisconsin rank in there? And does anyone have any general thoughts on how Wisconsin would compare to Colorado and Rice and how Colorado and Rice are?
