So I emailed them at the end of May or early June and they told me that they had only notified Flagship alternates because they have the domestic summer language classes, they said that alternates will probably be moved up in November and December given that the earliest a program start is January 1. That may not be the same for every region, but I think it would make sense to not spend time moving up alternates when they have other concerns and people who may have committed may change their plans because of COVID.

Does anybody know the alternate process for Boren? I know for CLS it is by language and then language level, but with Boren there’s more language variability and no set allocation (at least none that I know of) but anybody who has known a previous alternate or been through the program I’d be interested to know if anybody has any details
-
My advisor said something similar, he thinks that given the current status their may be a higher percentage of alternates than normal, as they are waiting to see what happens

I mean it demonstrates your commitment to the language so that’s a huge benefit and the iie programs (CLS, Boren and Fulbright) definitely have a connection, but CLS and Fulbright are more competitive programs overall, when you look purely at the numbers.
-
I think for French they are more strict on the starting level of proficiency, so I wouldn’t freak out about it.

Well I am working on my PhD and I’m a lecturer a large public school in the Southeast and we just moved all our courses online for the summer. My best friend works at a different school in the same region and they did the same. So I’m not sure what they are going to do about the summer programs. I was planning on applying for AFLI, but changed my mind because I have my dissertation proposal in the summer so I was supposed to be on campus. Not sure what will happen with that either
-
I applied for a Fellowship to Tanzania too, but not AFLI, just because my fellowship has a long research component based in Mwanza. I wish the AFLI would’ve worked because I hear the language immersion both at UF and in Arusha is really strong. But thanks for the update, it is encouraging that they aren’t scrapping the program entirely. I feel bad for all the people in ECA programs being called back to the US right now.

It seems a little late but that doesn’t mean that it is impossible and also don’t get caught up in what everyone else is doing, if you think you can put together a solid application in time you should go for it. Also if you are applying to a graduate degree in Scotland or other places in the UK if it is a partnership award not all of those require letters of affiliation or admission at the time of application, so check the website to double check what you need. But you do have to go through the university admissions process as well. I cold emailed the person I want to work with in Zambia and he replied the next day, so you never know the process could move much quicker than you think.

Applying to a Fulbright to do my dissertation field research in Zambia. This will be my first time applying for a Fulbright so I am a little nervous especially since I will need to develop a completely different dissertation project if I do not get it.

Me too. Best of luck y’all

I got nothing so far as well. I am trying to just focus on a paper that I have to write instead of constantly refreshing my email
