  1. I work at a university (staff) and part of the tuition benefit is to be able to earn a master's degree for free part-time while working on my job full-time. The money value is obvious, but will I be able to take full advantage of what the program has to offer if I am not available during work hours? Additionally, how bad really is the workload? It sounds like doing a master's degree full-time is already hard and stressful! Am I going to be miserable juggling both? If you or someone you know have any experience, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Feel free to message me directly as well. Thank you!

P.S. I'm hoping to earn a master's degree in graduate school of education.

    Hi Everyone!

I'm a recent HGSE graduate and writer for a graduate admission tips/advice blog called The Evolved Graduate ( evolvedgrad.com ). On the blog, I draw heavily on my experience at HGSE, and I hope that it's helpful to you as you make your way through the application process. I thought I'd get the ball rolling here for 2021 applicants. The HGSE 2020 thread has a longer life this season because of the second around of admissions, but I can imagine that 2021 applicants will soon arrive in larger numbers. I really enjoyed my time at HGSE, learned many lessons ( some on time, some too late!) and I'm glad to be a resource to any of you who'd like some perspective from former student. If there''s any graduate admission topics that you'd like covered in the blog please let me know. Additionally, I'm still in a facebook group with my HGSE class, so any questions that I can't answer, I could share with that larger group. Best of luck!

Thanks EvolvedGradBlog for starting this thread! I got into the schools I wanted but have decided not to attend this fall as planned because online learning is not for me. This is probably too early but I wonder if you have any intel on fall 2021 at HGSE? Still online? I might need to postpone again if next fall is online still.

Thanks for the response! It's really difficult to make a big decision like this during such an uncertain time, so I appreciate hearing from someone else weighing the same options. And actually, it looks like we reached the same conclusion - I'll be attending Penn as well! Looking forward to seeing you there!

Yay!! That's awesome! I am excited to see you in person!

I wish I had advice, but actually I'm struggling with the same question! I love Penn's program overall, and it really felt like the best "fit" (it's also the only one I was able to visit, so that may have something to do with it.) TC would be great because I could focus more directly on education in crisis/conflict areas. I think I'm just really freaked out about graduating with some not insignificant loans during a recession. That also puts American University (ITEP) into the mix for me. I would still have to take out loans for American, but much less than I would have to take out for Penn and TC. Have you been able to get any more information about career development for Penn or TC?

Unfortunately, I don't have much information on this. After talking with some current students, Penn sounds more practitioner driven and career-oriented. At TC, you might have to advocate for yourself a bit more.

Not sure if this is important to you but it sounds like two schools have very different vibes: most, if not all, of the students at Penn are full-time, and courses are more structured; at TC, more students work part-time (either outside of TC or have GA), so courses are more flexible, and many classes are offered in the evenings/at nights. At least that's what it seems like.

I feel for you---both are expensive programs and the additional stress of a recession is not definitely not ideal! I wish I knew more about the career support each school offers, but there is only so much career services can do. It would be nice to have some sort of guarantee, especially in uncertain times like now, but at the end of the day, it depends on ourselves to secure a job.

Was it helpful at all? I am going to Penn in case you are curious. DM me if you want to chat more! Best of luck (and maybe see you at Penn)!!

  5. Hello!! I need to hear some advice from people who are knowledgeable on these two programs. My major concern is career development, but all insights are welcome!

Placement rate--I didn't get a straight answer from either schools in their admitted student webinars. Penn might provide better support on the individual level since the cohort is much smaller (~30, TC is 80-90) and internship is basically guaranteed by the program (at TC, you are basically on your own).  But TC's program has a much longer history (thus more extensive alumni network) and a more comprehensive curriculum (thus more diverse alumni network), so maybe you are better connected at TC?

So basically Penn is better because it's small, and TC is better because it's big. Quite a conundrum...

*Finance is not a factor here since I will be paying probably the same amount after doing some extensive calculation and estimation (scholarships, living expenses, GA, moving fee...all have been considered).

Hi! I would love to see more here as well, where are you looking? I have narrowed down to Vandy, GW, and NYU. I have virtual admitted student sessions with Vandy and NYU coming up this week. Hoping that clarifies my decision. I didn't receive any money from Vandy and I did from GW and NYU but I like Vandy's program layout better, so I am feeling stuck.

I am also hoping those virtual sessions will help me with the decision making process. Penn, TC, and NYU are top on my list. Have you applied to any graduate assistanship? That could help with the finance part.

See you at NYU's session next week!

Looking for my fellow IEP/IE/IED applicants!!! I am hoping to have some guidance and opinions about the schools I have been applying to and what best avenue to take. I have so far applied to TC Columbia, NYU Steinhardt, Vanderbilt, George Washington University, and SIT.

I have been doing my research and notice that programs vary a lot between schools. My biggest concern is about the career outlook afterwords. Just curious what everyone's general opinion in as well as to see where my fellow IE folks are out there and what your experience has been.

I also am wondering where I will get in.. Low GRE scores but I think Vandy is the only who required on application.

Hello fellow IED/IEP applicant! How are the schools treating you? Would love to see more actions on this topic as we are getting closer to April 15.

  8. My partner and I are currently in Harrisburg. I am heading to Penn this Fall, but he will keep his job in Harrisburg. How challenging and costly would it be for him to commute between Philly and Harrisburg daily? Anyone has any experience/knowledge on this? Thanks!

I got 10k merit scholarship but they did not offer me a GA position. But I guess we have to apply for those positions?

Yes, we do need to apply for GA positions. I emailed admissions about it back in mid-Feb. Not sure if different programs have different timelines. I got into M.Ed. in IEDP.

    Hello all,

I'm looking into pursuing a doctorate in higher education in the near future, but would love to be able to continue working at my current job in higher ed. I know there are plenty of online EdD programs out there, but I'm wondering if anyone knows which ones are more reputable. I'm not looking for Ivy League or anything like that, but I just want to make sure that the program is sustainable and instructors are good.

Thanks for any insight you can give!

I have heard good things about Penn State University's part-time program.

  11. Hi ClassicsCandidate! I got into PSU M.Ed Higher Education and I am fortunate to talk to a few of my colleagues who did the same program part-time. It sounds like a good program with flexibility, especially for a working professional. Not sure what you are looking for, but you can get in touch with an alumni ambassador at PSU and ask about their experience. I have been in touch with one and she is very helpful. Here is the email: pennstateonline@psu.edu

    Good luck to you!
