Applying to Munk 2019, NPSIA, GSPIA, BSIA etc.
another_canuck replied to snowflake96's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I applied to the program and got rejected, but I will answer your questions regarding reputation/ranking and opinion. The MPPGA is ranked 5th in the country https://www.opencanada.org/features/state-international-relations-studies-canada/ UBC is ranked 3rd in the country https://www.macleans.ca/education/university-rankings/university-rankings-2019-canadas-top-medical-doctoral-schools/ I suggest trusting Times ranking of UBC more than Maclean's https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2019/world-ranking#!/page/0/length/25/locations/CA/sort_by/rank/sort_order/asc/cols/stats I have been to Vancouver before and it is a beautiful, but expensive city (an extra expense to an already costly program). It is at the opposite end of the country from the capital (Ottawa), so wanting connections to Global Affairs from Vancouver might prove to be quite challenging. However, if you want more local/provincial policy work, it shouldn't be hard because it's close to the provincial capital of Victoria and Vancouver is the province's biggest city. And UBC/MPPGA seems to have a lot of connections with Alberta (a neighbouring province), so you could do policy work in Alberta as well (I got this information from when I contacted their program coordinator). Congrats on getting their offer and good luck deciding whether to accept or defer it.- 565 replies

From my understanding of the bilingualism policy at uOttawa (and probably at GSPIA too), students can write assignments and exams in their preferred language (so French lecture but English paper/exam). I would assume that not having Canadian citizenship would disqualify you from government positions, but check with GSPIA or uOttawa's co-op office. There's a GSPIA group on FB (as snowflake96 mentioned), but I haven't been accepted into it despite requesting access in April...- 565 replies

Exactly! It doesn't leave a good impression when they've been taking a long time to respond to students' applications.- 565 replies

Has anybody received rejection letters from NPSIA? They haven't responded to my emails or updated the status of my application (it's at "recommended for assessment"), and I would like to have some closure from my application before I start GSPIA in September, haha.- 565 replies

I wouldn't bother emailing them, since our place in the waitlist is not based on ranking. They will re-evaluate waitlist candidates if a spot opens up.- 565 replies

I would think the MPPAL would be best for the community engagement/social service/government, while MBA would be for anything else... -

Try asking for an extension. If they don't give you one, accept their offer on the last day. I am on the Munk waitlist as well, and had received an offer from GSPIA at the beginning of March. I asked for an extension a week before my offer's deadline, and my extended deadline was earlier this week. I accepted on the last day of the extended deadline because I didn't get off the Munk waitlist or hear back from the other schools I applied to.- 565 replies

Withdrawing an application will certainly end the chances of acceptance. Hang in tight, at least you will be going somewhere this September. I can only imagine the frustration of being on a waitlist but not being accepted anywhere.- 565 replies

I often heard from professors and professionals that it looks good on a resume to have attended different schools because it indicates your adaptability for new environments, interpersonal abilities, and other soft skills. That being said however, it would be foolish to disregard the reputation/ranking of the different programs, especially if they are vastly different. I would choose MPP over MPPGA for the new academic environment, new potential professional connections and that it is significantly more affordable (it will certainly be lighter on your student debt if you have any). Also, if you want to work in the energy sector, I would think that Calgary would be optimal. -

I'm currently at Carleton for my bachelor's (and have applied for my master's there, along with other schools), and I have been in Ottawa for most of my life. So, here's my take on each school's reputation points. uOttawa: downtown campus (established mid-1800s), bilingual university (largest in the world), significantly higher global and national ranking than Carleton (primarily because of their medical and law schools and bilingual status), and second largest co-op program in Ontario (after Waterloo's). Carleton: suburban campus (established post-WW2), anglophone university, top national ranks in international affairs, public policy + administration, political science + economy + management, and journalism. If you only care about the program's reputation, then Carleton is for you. However, if that is not the case, uOttawa definitely has some great advantages over Carleton. Those advantages lie primarily in the school's downtown location (close to government offices and Parliament), school's bilingualism (a huge plus if you intend to work in the federal government), school's large co-op program (lots of opportunities to work), and higher global and national ranking than Carleton (#176 vs #501-600 range). However, that is not to say uOttawa's program is not well-regarded or that Carleton won't present you with good working opportunities (they also have a co-op program). Hope my info has been helpful for you, and feel free to pm me if you have more questions. Congrats on receiving your offers and good luck to whichever school you go to! -

Yeah, Glendon College. It is amazing how they pretty much guarantee a scholarship, but I guess they can afford it since tuition is only $3.5k ?- 565 replies

Out of curiosity, has anybody here applied to York's MPIA? I considered applying to it as my very last choice, but didn't feel like spending the extra money to write a French knowledge exam that wasn't in Ottawa.- 565 replies

New to this forum, and this is the second thread I'm reading and posting in (first being the "Munk, NPSIA, GSPIA, BSIA etc"). Has anybody in this thread received an offer (or sadly waitlisted/rejected) from UBC's MPPGA? In the other thread I'm in, people have been receiving offers within the past week or so. Congrats to those who have accepted their offers and good luck to those still waiting in this admissions purgatory! -
