  1. As far as I know, they will not check/track your official documents such as passports and the like. That is far too much hassle for a student. However, a fair warning that if something/anything does happen and they find out that you are back stateside, you are going to be in a world of trouble. You would be surprised at how they can find out things. I remember when I was overseas, a couple of my classmates left the country for a weekend when they weren't supposed to and almost got away with it. That is, until someone mentioned a specific rendezvous from the outing that raised the suspicions of one of the school officials. In the end, they almost got kicked out of the country and all of their home university directors were notified. It was very rough, but that's a gamble they took. I wouldn't go through with this if I were you. These types of awards are developmental and intended to allow you learn as much as you can from the host country you are studying in. If you are not able to participate fully (especially since you've already done this before), why not just allow someone else to accept the award who can completely benefit from it? Just my thoughts, good luck.
  2. That's a good question and I would assume something like that did occur. Hopefully someone comes along and can clarify things for us.
  3. Anyone have any information to share about this? Perhaps someone who has won it and has finished their award? I messaged the above user about the slack group, but no response yet.
  4. @Adelaide9216 - Would you say $5000 usd is enough to live off of for a semester for a student attending McGill University? Tuition would be taken care of but would this amount be enough for the student to find their own nice studio?
  5. @Rivai 1. At this point it is probably still early, but you do feel participating in IMCEERES will affect your ability to receive a clearance when you return to the USA and seek to fulfull the Boren service requirement? 2. Are you able to mention your career aspirations and/or background regarding this region of the world? (here or via PM) 3. I'm guessing the program is set up to not have students remain in any one country for longer than three months because of the three month rule for funds in Partner countries? 4. How did you find the application process in general? ^ On the website, it seems pretty straightforward and simple. Was that pretty much the case for you?
  6. @Rivai - That is great to know! Although I must say I was a bit surprised when you mentioned individuals receiving the fellowship for the same language. I had always thought this would be the norm and not the exception since adding another language to mix might be seen as lacking focus. 1. Did you get a feeling they more encourage continuing study in the same language OR learning another totally separate critical language that can be used in a government career? Also, I thought I remember reading that you also received a CLS in the same year as your Boren (and you received a Fulbright for Russia also). 2. The dates did not overlap for you regarding the June convocation? Or were you referring to the final convocation upon finishing your Boren? 2a. Additionally, were the languages you focused on all the same for these three programs above or did they differ significantly? ^ I ask because with many Intel jobs, knowledge in different languages can always be put to good use but I'm not sure of Boren's focus here. Lastly, about IMCEERES, yes, I'd love to know more. Shall we head to that thread and discuss the program?
  7. Is there anyone here who is a part of this program OR has finished this program that can discuss how the programs works in detail? I am very interested in applying but I would like to know how the program vibes (coursework, learning environment, languages, etc.). Thank you.

  9. Thank you for the replies. @trine - Your contact seems to have worked off the service requirement for the scholarship first before applying for the Fellowship, yes? @Rivai - Did the people you know follow this same path as above? Or did they go straight to the Fellowship and then combine the service requirements for both?
  10. Anyone ever hear/read about someone actually receiving BOTH a Boren scholarship and fellowship award? I think I have read about individuals receiving multiple Fulbrights but despite it being possible to receive both awards, I've never heard of anyone doing so for Boren.
  11. @motorka I'm not sure if changing countries could be interpreted as a lack of focus.
  12. The Fulbright Student program has an option entitled "Study/Research" award. I've asked around at my school but I am still unsure if a graduating college senior can apply for, say, a Chinese Fulbright to study at an (intensive) language program somewhere in China? If this is possible, then I am curious what the grant proposal would look like considering the student would also apply for the CLEA as well. Thoughts? Or if you have done this exactly or know someone who has, even better. Thank you.
