  1. Hi, I emailed the CAMB people yesterday and they replied back within a few hours. I was rejected. "Thank you for your continuing interest in CAMB. We received a record number of applications this year, and the admissions process was exceptionally competitive. Unfortunately, you were not selected for interview. I realize this decision will be received with disappointment. Please know that this is not a negative assessment of your potential to do important and impactful science, but rather a reflection of a limitation in our ability to interview and recruit the many highly qualified candidates in our applicant pool."
  2. Same here. I started back running. That helps to clear my mind and just being outside helps me not think as much about it...at least while i'm running.

  4. Happy New Year's Eve everyone! So I applied to graduate school over the fall and submitted my transcript at the time. The courses I was taking were still in progress, so there wasn't a grade posted for those. I graduated from the school, and I was wondering if I should update my applications with an updated transcript. My grades for the fall semester were released after the deadlines. Is it worth updating my transcript or should I just leave my applications as they are?
  5. I also applied to UPenn but I haven't heard anything either.
  6. Hi, does the application status change in the portals? For all the schools I applied to it just says "submitted" and under recent activity it says "payment received". I was wondering if it changes to "under review" or anything before a rejection or interview invite.
  7. I applied to Emory and Vandy also, but I haven't heard anything back either. I just keep checking my email every two minutes. ? Good luck to you!
  8. Undergrad Institution: Small agricultural college in Georgia Major: Biology-Biochemistry (my concentration was in biochemistry) GPA in Major: Unknown Overall GPA: 3.73 Type of Student: Domestic GRE: I didn't take the GRE; my programs didn't require it. Research: 3 years in a neuroscience lab. About a year in a microbiology lab (kinda). 1 international poster presentation, 1 regional poster presentation, 2 local poster presentations. 2 abstract publications (1 first author and 1 second). Awards and such: President's List, Dean's List, NSF ASSESTS Scholar, Magna Cum Laude graduate. Other things: I co-authored a grant for my neuro lab. I have been working in a state lab for 3 years as a chemical analyst. I served as my school's principal horn player and section leader for 3 years. Applying to: UNC, UGA, UAB, UVA, Duke, Vanderbilt, Emory, UPenn. Recommendations: 1 from my adviser, 1 from my research mentor, and 1 from one of my bosses. I'm really nervous. I applied to most microbiology programs. I know most of my research is in neuroscience, but I'm more interested in microbiology and immunology than neuroscience. We just didn't really have much micro research going on where I am at.
  9. Hi! I applied to these ones: UNC-Chapel Hill UGA UAB Emory Vanderbilt UVA Duke UPenn Good luck to everyone! ?
  10. Its months later...but here we are. Anyway, I applied to Emory, University of Georgia, University of Alabama, Vanderbilt, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Duke University, and University of Pennsylvania. All of them were Biomed that didn't require the GRE. For a few, you pick a more specific area to apply to but it is still under the Biomed umbrella. for some others you can list a few areas of interest. For the remaining you apply to the umbrella program itself. I know for some that allow you to give a few options for your area, they will float your application to other areas if you aren't accepted to your top choice. Other schools don't do that (or at least they didn't specify that they did). Some of my schools aren't as competitive as those on the list above, but they are some other options for people to look into.
  11. Hi all! So I saw someone ask something similar somewhere else, but I thought I'd ask here to see what you guys had to say. If you have presented posters and whatnot, and you have a PDF of the poster, is that something worth putting on your application as like a supplemental material in addition to your CV/SoP/etc? I hadn't really thought much about adding that to my application, just curious. Thanks!
  12. I used a combination of NextStep and Kaplan books, and I bought a NextStep self-paced course. My MCAT score was trash (498), but I also focused more on my GPA than my MCAT score. For NexStep I would recommend the 108 CARS Passages book. It's great CARS Practice with explanations for every question. They also have one for discrete questions that was okay. However, there content books seemed to be a little wishy-washy on some material. Like one book would say one thing about a topic but a separate book would say the opposite on the same topic. But other than that their content goes pretty in depth in my opinion. For Kaplan, I used an older version of just an MCAT Prep set. I though their information was a great overview of everything, just not quite as in depth as NextStep. For the prep course I bought, you get 10 practice tests through NextStep plus an additional 3 through AAMC. You also get the standard AAMC prep materials (Q-banks, practice tests, etc.) which I though was really helpful. You also get a bunch of NextStep q-banks and whatnot. You build the course according to you schedule. I would trust the NextStep exams. All of mine (roughly 8ish) that I took with NextStep were similar to what I got with my AAMC (all 3) ones and my actual MCAT was about where I expected based on those. There are videos of literally every topic that you can access at any time and they give pretty good explanations. Personally, I think that if you really commit to sticking to the course and doing every single thing they tell you, you can get a great score. I just didn't do that. I put off my studying and tried to mostly study on my own.
  13. Happy Monday, I'm not sure if this is something members do here, but I thought I would ask. I am applying to biomedical science programs this fall for fall 2020. I am trying to get everything together over the summer. I started a rough draft of my personal statement, and I was wondering if anyone would be interested/willing to read over it and give me some feedback. Feel free to message me if you are interested. Thanks in advance!
  14. @cephalexin Thanks so much for replying. This gave me some more schools to look into and hopefully start to concise my list a little more. I am more interested in research than patient care and am okay with just doing a PhD for now. I'm still interested in doing an MD as well, but I don't mind taking the scenic route and spending a few extra years in school. I'm not opposed to retaking the MCAT, I just don't feel that my score would improve enough right now. If the time comes, I know I'll probably have to pay for med school myself, but I figured if I still wanted to do it bad enough, I'd find a way. Thanks again for your help!
  15. Hi all! I was wondering if anyone was willing to weigh in on helping me decide what grad schools to choose. I have a 3.7 GPA and about 2.5 years of research experience on four different projects. Two projects have abstract publications and three have been presented at national/international conferences. I work for a state laboratory and have been there for almost 3 years now as a fuel analyst/researcher. I applied to MD/PhD programs, but my MCAT score is pretty low and I feel it's very unlikely for me to get in. So now I am leaning towards applying to biomedical science programs. My current list is below if anyone wants to add to it or offer any kind of advice. I really want to narrow down my list to around 5 or 6 schools that I have a decent chance of getting into, whether that be five from this list, five not on this list or a combination. Thanks in advance! -Emory, Vanderbilt, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Virginia, Indiana School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve, UPenn, University of Pittsburgh, Penn State, University of Michigan, UNC at Chapel Hill, and Ohio State.
