Hi - y'all are all extremely impressive! Congrats to everyone who's gotten in and those who've gotten scholarships!!! ??

Wondering if anyone here applied with a GPA under 3.0? I dropped out of undergrad and took all F's a few times and my grades in general are pretty variable. In undergrad I worked full-time off-campus and never anticipated grad school so just did what I needed to graduate. Very different phase of my life now, but concerned unless i go to a community college I wont get in anywhere. I have 5 years of high-level management in sports consulting for a company in NYC but pivoted in 2018 and ended up doing a year of AmeriCorps at an elementary school. The beginning of this year I worked at the school in a SPED program for kids with social emotional challenges...

Anyways, my GPA is like a 2.6 in Communication from a Wisco state school so as I'm reading all your strong candidacies I'm feeling a little alien here. But I'm applying to some top 20 schools and wanted to put this post out there in case there anyone like me thinking - who are these extremely successful people and are all applicants like this!?! - hahahah

Just wanted to be candid as a non-traditional applicant and give a slightly different perspective here :)

Congrats again and good luck to all!

Thanks for the candid and honest post! So here’s my honest response - take it with a grain of salt.

So I have read in the past of success stories of candidates getting into top programs with a 2.5+. Actually some programs do not have a GPA requirement, however a 3.0 is encouraged. In those success stories I have read - the applicants did submit GRE scores to show academic aptitude in some way, (the school needs to know you can complete the program). I don’t think they‘d turn down applicants solely based on GPA, however it is a huge factor if one doesn’t have other areas they can showcase their ability on (research, experience, professional, volunteer, etc).

Also - this is where your SOP, professional experience, and LOR’s need to be absolutely solid to help you get in some top 20 programs. If you can use your professional experience as an initial gateway for social work and somehow convey that, and what skills are transferrable, you’ll have a decent chance. I am unsure if it’s enough just to say you have consulting experience without adding value to those skills you’ve gained and how it would help you be a good social worker! I think your volunteer service will come in handy here - and be sure to tie that into your SOP. Also if your last 60 credits are higher than a 3.0 that may help you significantly. It shows an upward Trend.

    Good Luck!

Thank you for your hype and encouragement, you are the MVP of the MSW 2020 crew.

Did you hear right at 5pm?

And yeah I need to make some te and meditate for a quick 10 and go back to work and check again later. OOF.

Thank you - that's so sweet!!

Hahah It's been a really great cycle and I am hoping for the best for everyone!

I haven't gotten an update on my portal but this came from their application handbook: "All applicants who receive an offer of admission are required to provide an official copy of their final transcript prior to enrollment."

I WANT TO BE EXC ITED BUT IT DOESN'T FEEL REAL TILL THE PORTAL SAYS SO

I KNOW YOU GOT IT, give it a few minutes!!! That is exactly what mine said when I got in.

IM soooooooooooooooooooo excited for you!! Maybe close it for a bit and return in a hour.

GUYS. I just checked my Columbia portal and it changed and now says "awaiting final transcripts" with red X's. I called to see if that meant I got in since they only require final transcripts when you get accepted and they said to "wait until I get an official notice" before I do anything.

Anyone else see that change on their Columbia portal??

GIRL I am pretty sure that means you got IN!!!!!!! THATS WHAT MINE LOOKED LIKE!!! GIVE IT 5 minutes until 5pm ET!

Ah I just checked my CU portal and for a while it's had everything as received but now it has a red X saying that it's awaiting a final transcript from my university. Does anyone know if this means anything?

MINE SAID THAT WHEN I GOT IN!!!!!

When they accept you into the program - they ask for the final transcript!

Just ASU still. It makes me increasingly nervous to stay in the dark as others find out. But I'm staying hopeful as best as I can!!! ?

Ah. I can understand the anxiety, this thread is probably not helping then. I know for myself I applied in Earlyyyyyyyyyyyyy Nov for alot of the programs, so it makes sense why I've heard back. I am sure everyone will know their decisions by Mid Feb for the Majority. I remember you have great stats, so you really are pretty much set! Just waiting is the WORST....................

No I also couldn’t tell, I’m just thinking maybe they would since both tuition and COL are insane there. It seems like otherwise they’d be a top SW school just producing grads who are too in debt to do anything productive

    Gotcha.

I am curious to see, it is my dream school and would be helpful to know how can I swing the costs.

One of my good friends graduated from there and was able to pay all her debt off within a couple years. I HAVE NO IDEA how. I think actually just from opening a private practice.

I checked spam. All I have is the confirmation email that my application was submitted so far. I'll give it until tomorrow at noon.

Gotcha. To my understanding, once your application is complete on file, they send an email to ask you to call them and schedule the interview. It's for every candidate.

"According to our records, your application to the MSW Program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2) is now complete. The next step in the admissions process is an application interview, which we would like to schedule soon.

To arrange a time and date for your interview, please call our Admissions Office at (215) 746-1934 at any point between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM (Eastern Time) on Mondays through Fridays. A member of our admissions team will help you schedule your interview, which will be conducted in person or via Zoom video chat."

Tbh I’m not even considering Columbia but I want to know my scholarship to see if I can use it to get more money from other schools and then decline the offer haha

Hahahahahaahah. That is a great strategy. Do you know if they offer a lot? I couldn't gather much from my past years threads.

Yeah, I assume since I submitted day of the deadline they have a lot of people to sort through.

I applied 12/19 and they emailed me to schedule my interview on 12/20. Did the email go to your spam?? They should of got back to you by now, I would call if I were you.

Congrats on all the acceptances so far! I received my acceptance letter from CU last week as well as my financial aid award this week. Sending supportive vibes to everyone!!

AHH! I still have not received my financial aid award, did this come by email or via portal?? Did they offer scholarships?

Has anyone heard back from Columbia or Berkeley? A few weeks back I saw a few people post about it? I constantly check the portals for updates.  I’ve been on edge and eager waiting for acceptance responses! This has been one of the most exciting and nerve wrecking times of my life. I applied both in December 2019.

I heard back 1/16 from CU, which I believe was the first day of released decisions.

This weekend, I was accepted at UChicago with a half-tuition scholarship. Still haven't heard from most places and only have 1 scholarship decision so far. Seems like there's interest in seeing timelines for submission to acceptance, so I'm sharing my roster, which is in line with what we've heard from others. All are MSW programs (clinical) with the exception of George Washington University, which is a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Accepted: UChicago (applied 12/1, accepted 1/25), UMichigan (applied 12/1, accepted 1/13), Ohio State (applied 12/1, accepted 12/13)

Waiting to Hear Back: GWU (11/22), Columbia (12/1), Smith College (1/5), Boston Univ (1/10), University of Pittsburgh (1/20), UPenn (1/25)

    Congrats!!!

Has anyone applied for MSW program twice? I was denied by 2 schools in 2018 right out of undergrad, took 1.5 years off to work (same place had my BSW internship) and have a new and 100% improved SOP. Still nervous about my chances seeing as they denied me once before...anyone similar issues? Should I be applying to other schools *if* i get denied again..? It's difficult because I'd then have to go out of state

A friend of mine was rejected the first time by UC, applied the second year and got in! So you totally encouraged to apply again if you have more experience. It also depends on the pool of candidates you were applying against the first time around. I think you should definitely go for it!
