I just heard back from HKS today, and I am admitted! But no scholarship though. I was already mentally prepared to go to Harris (they raised my scholarship to $30k per year).

I am super excited, but don't know what to choose. I am from China, so the Harvard brand is worth way too much than everything. Any thoughts?

Good luck to everyone! Look forward to hearing some good news.

Congratulations!! I too was admitted today. Very happy to receive the news. :)

So one thing to think about is how COVID-19 will probably scare away a lot of the Chinese international students (make that international students period). Their full tuition (or close to full tuition) payments subsidize a lot of funding for American students. My bet is that funding will decrease.

Another thing to think about is how if you defer to next year, funding may decrease by virtue of competition - as in a lot more people will be trying to ride out the recession by going to grad school, and you'll have to compete with them for funding.

These are really good points! Thank you! I vacillate back and forth almost daily. Not much time left to make up my mind...

What are people's thoughts re: deferring for a year? There will be a vaccine available by then, classes won't be remote, and by graduation we will be hopefully closer to the end of any recession that occurs. That being said, what are the chances of funding being worse next year? I'm thinking quite likely ?

@Coffeetea you are bringing life to this forum today!! Thank you!

If you would've asked me a week ago, I would've said there's no way I'm deferring but as time passes I am really starting to consider it. The advocacy work I'm doing at the moment seems more crucial than ever and then there's the whole online factor to consider. Gonna wait a couple more weeks to make a decision.

Well, if you held a few Corona parties and spread the love and more people got sick in the US....then more international students are likely to defer their offers ?

Spread the love, amigo. Spread the love!!!

lololol as it turns out, we don't need to have a party to botch containment. U.S. officially has more known cases than any other country. Uh oh.

If Fall 2020 classes are offered only online, then do you think they will offer a fee reduction too?

If I have to pay the same amount for online classes - but also forego the opportunity to network in-person, and to engage with people face-to-face - then I'm gonna lose it.

For the MPA program at Goldman, the first of two summer sessions (a six week intensive) is now going to be offered online only. Have yet to receive any indication that there will be a tuition reduction. Beyond the money, I am just really concerned about thriving in an academically rigorous environment that runs from 8:30-4:30 everyday... online. Also (and I think this is what you are saying) I am in it for the cohort. Lack of person-to-person, while understandable in these circumstances, seems like a real loss.

I wouldn't lose hope yet. It's likely that with the Covid-19 issue, international students from countries with better public health systems (mainly in SE Asia), may not want to move to the US. They may all apply for a deferment, especially since studying online during Fall 2020 (a likely possibility) is not what anyone signed up for.

I so appreciate your positive outlook! Maybe there will be some deferrals that will make a little room for waitlist folks. (Fingers crossed!)

I'm mostly going to be at Fletcher if the waitlist doesn't move. I can't find data anywhere on average improvement. I dug really deep and saw that a lot of people had gotten off the waitlist in 2012 /2013 I forget which - in the gradcafe thread. But no data of any year after.

Same... I also looked through past threads and did see any evidence of folks getting off the wait list. Feel like it's a real long shot.

  8. I have a feeling the coronavirus will have the biggest impact on the mid-career programs, most of which seem to have a mandatory summer component. Definitely concerned about doing intensive schoolwork online from a learning perspective. Also it's definitely not an ideal way to make relationships within a cohort.

That's what Michigan is saying too. Although the dean did hedge his bets and said they're going to be getting better at online stuff over the summer, or something along those lines

Yeah, maybe some people will reject their offers earlier.

That's my take as well. If I was certain in my decision I would let schools know right away so that I could begin planning and (finally) allow myself to be excited!

I'm on the MPA2 waitlist. Fingers crossed so hard. I have a generous offer from Fletcher's - but want to know what the probability of this is going to be.

Sorry I didn't see your post on the main HKS thread but glad you found this thread! :)

Some of those who got offers for the HKS MPP might also have applied for the MPA at the WWS which is a far more generous program in terms of FinAid. Besides yields are supposed to be lower this time so hang tight; you might still receive an offer from HKS.

Hi! MC/MPA waitlisted here. Would love to know more about what y'all are hearing about yields this year. I've been wondering if HKS decisions were delayed in part because adcomms shifted yields to account for potentially more deferrals or more people declining offer altogether this year.

Congrats to everyone who got admitted!

I got waitlisted, which is actually a pleasant surprise since I was expecting straight rejection.

A questions for admitted folks, when do you have to respond to your offer? Just trying to figure out a timeline here!

Just saw your new thread for folks waitlisted at HKS and, as a fellow waitlister, wanted to say thanks so much and also draw attention to it for others who might be looking for a spot to think things through.

I'm sorry to go off topic in these tense times, but... has anyone heard anything about schools not reopening for in-person classes in the fall? I know that most are doing remote learning through the end of the spring semester, but someone told me that NYU was doing online classes only for next semester (fall 2020)  as well, but I can't find it ANYWHERE. I can't imagine why schools would feel the need to do that... Help???

I started a thread for this topic here. Definitely some program changes already rolling in.

  14. Hello forum friends! Congratulations on your recent grad school acceptances! Have you all begun to hear about changes to programs you have been admitted to in light of the coronavirus? Sounds like lots of New Admit days will be virtual only. Is there anything else? Have your schools started to communicate with you about other things that might shift, i.e. start date, date you must respond to your offer by, etc.?

(FYI, Goldman School is hosting a webinar for new admits next week to talk about how they are handling the situation. The MPA program is slated to begin in May, which suddenly seems very soon in light of everything that's going on. Per the school's Instagram, I see that the plan for current students is on online learning through spring semester.)

  15. I know this seems counterintuitive but I felt somewhat relieved when I saw the blogpost this morning. A few days of not frantically checking emails lol. It must be really chaotic at the school right now. Wishing all of the HKS folks and you guys well during this wild time. I'm going to keep myself busy by working on a homeschool plan for my kids. Oy.

  16. What would we do without ye olde grade cafe during times like these?? When I logged into the forum today I saw a "HOT" badge adorning this thread which is something I had not observed before. Lots and lots of comments on this highly-anticipated day. Anyway, I take the most recent blogpost to mean that decisions are not coming out today. I imagine there is a whole separate communications matter that's come into play with COVID-19. In addition to notifying applicants of admissions status, information about the impact of the virus seems likely to be included. For example, I imagine that in-person functions for admitted students would take a different form or be delayed. I'm sure many of you read this sad story in the NYT yesterday about Harvard students (amongst so many others) returning home... https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/11/us/colleges-cancel-classes-coronavirus.html

Hello friends what do you think about Goldman school at Berkeley. Has anyone heard from them ?

I was admitted to Goldman's MPA program a couple of months ago but not sure if MPP decisions have been released yet. I'm excited about the possibility of attending Goldman as it really offers everything I am looking for... but waiting to see what happens with HKS before making a decision. Hopefully all will be revealed by the end of next week. Admissions purgatory is pretty terrible!

Hi! It seems that this is the only forum of HKS active so far, this year. And now, we have mixed group of MPP, MPA, MC/MPA and MPA/ID applicants. Will it be possible for you to rename the group to "Harvard Kennedy 2020" instead of "Harvard Kennedy MPP 2020"? Give it a thought.

I wish I could rename the thread but I don't think I can as I did not start it. :( But you are right, there's a big mix of us here as this seems to be the only active forum for HKS this year, at least as far as I can tell.
