Yes, Princeton is my first choice. What about you? Are you following the events for the Prospective Students at Princeton right now? Regarding Harvard : Yes, all departments (EDIT: Sections, not departments) (Spanish, Italian, French) decide altogether which students are admitted. They have a common policy/budget/what-have-you so they must select students among the three sections. I have been waitlisted for Harvard, so... I just have to wait for now.

Well it's a rejection for me in NYU. I'm thinking, how often a PhD application is rejected in April without going through at least an interview?

Top of the day to you all, I applied for PhD programs in French Studies, and so far I have been rejected in my applications ; only NYU hasn't answered yet, but I was not offered any interview so far. However, Columbia University offered to get me into the M.A. program. The thing is, of course, that this basically requires 100.000$ (including living fees) just for a year. They have written very encouraging and thoughtful emails about the funding opportunities, but they did insist that they were limited. Coming from the French system, I tend to pay less than 20.000$ (including living fees) a year for my studies, because the tuition fees in Paris cost around 500$ a year, versus 65 000$ in Columbia. Paying a 130 times higher tuition fee is quite... hard to conceive. I'm considering a PhD for the academic year 2021-2022, preferably in Princeton or Columbia, but I don't know how relevant a M.A. would be to be accepted. I have been rejected already in other applications for the years 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. It even seems that very few of the M.A. holders in one university are actually accepted into the PhD program — at least it seems so in Columbia University in French studies. So, how can I expect to provide this amount of money? Are on-campus jobs paid enough and accessible? Shouldn't I do something more relevant for my career with such an amount of money, like funding a young research team, interview equipments, support theatrical/literary projects relevant to my area of expertise, attend conferences and developing my academic identity by myself? My deepest thanks to anyone who took the time to read all of this so far, and my gratitude to everyone caring enough to provide advice.

I can tell you one thing. I called some universities, and most of the time, they would tell you something vague, and that wouldn't be even right. They'd tell you "probably next week", and still no news after two weeks. So... I know what you want, but an e-mail from you to them ain't gonna do you any good, whatever the answer is. Hold on, dear, hold on.

That makes me think, you didn't submit your acceptance to the website, did you? Because all I can see is two people who had interviews on the 5th and on the 6th. I heard of no one else being accepted to NYU so far, or even rejected, regardless of them having been interviewed or not. Edit: Nevermind, searching "nyu" provides less results than searching "new york university".

Now this is crazy. Who would you like to have as a research director then ? Based on what LOiseauRouge said in other posts, it seems that you would have a lot to say to each other. My subject is quite close to yours as well ; I'm interested in how playwrights refer to animalistic figures to question how they can "belong" to a community. So... close enough?

That's really impressive, that's quite amazing. Say, NYU-enthusiasts, did you hear anything today? They aren't taking longer than mid-February, usually. PS: I realized after posting that I might sound sarcastic, but it was not, I was just searching for more meaningful words to comment your projects but decided that it would have been boring. I wish I knew more about your subjects so that we could have a talk about them. Anyway, not sarcastic! Your subjects are mouth-watering. ?

Hello everyone, I tried to read all of your messages ; some of them are very informative, others are... quite tough. It's terrible to see the intensity of what's at stake for us. I wish I could hug you all and go out for a drink. I still wonder, though, how often (and I mean cold statistics) is someone interviewed more than 3 weeks after the first interviewees? Last year, when I applied and got rejected, it felt like everything was given quite fast. This year, I have not a single answer, but I didn't know this website last year and I realize that some people get the interviews, the acceptances AND the rejections even "on time" according to last year's calendar. I wonder if it's worth preparing for interviews or if I should build my back up plan. In the meantime, to be honest, I'm bingereading and bingewatching. Any thoughts, comrades ?
