Huh... maybe you'll be working on the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal?
I mean, I will definitely take that over teaching undergrads...

Which prof?
It says Professor Carment.

Just received the TA assignment. Looks like I'm doing "publication administration' with a Professor at NPSIA instead of a normal course, whatever that means...

How many hours did they give you with admission, if you don't mind me asking?
I didn't get the syllabus - any chance I can email you to forward it to me
It doesn't show how many hours I have in my admission awards, just the total award amount...

I got nothing - I may email them to see what's going regarding that considering COVID situation.
I just emailed Kailey earlier this week. She said we should be finding out in the middle of August, so ASAP hopefully? I also just sent out all my employment paperwork to HR.
Got the INAF 5018 syllabus today via email. Anyone else get a chance to read it?

i'm aware current students might be able to better answer this. i was just wondering - do you know if the Oct deadline for completing the introductory econ classes is a hard deadline? and what happens if someone doesn't meet the cut off grade? will they have to retake the course?
I recall reading an email earlier this year that specified they would be more "sympathetic" to final econ grades in light of the current situation. Don't quote me on that though. I really don't know what that would mean in a practical sense.

Sooo any one hear anything back regarding the Override requests?? All I received back was a note advising if space opened up they would reconsider. Did manage to register for 5410 Canada in INTL Affairs tho.
And if anyone is in Ottawa and would like to meet for coffee drop me a pm.
I'm also very down to grab a coffee with anybody in Ottawa. It would be nice to meet some other people in the program! Just DM as well.

Is anyone doing a TA'ship? I still haven't heard anything or have any assignments in my Carleton Central. Does anyone know anything about what that process looks like?

I'm in DFP too, and should also be taking 5100 in the fall.
Winter:
5009 - International Aspects of Economic Development
5403 - Diplomacy and Foreign Policy
5429 - Selected Topics in DFP (too bad they haven't announced the exact topic for this one!)It seems like we might cross paths!
Classes were filled really quickly and I had a 10:30 time ticket. Hoping some courses will open up again but not sure...
I think we will cross paths for sure! Our timetables are almost identical hahaha. It says you're from Calgary too? Are you moving to Ottawa for the Fall or staying there?

I'm in DFP, also curious to see what anyone in this field designation is opting for as well. My time ticket opens up at 14:30.

Wondering what language everyone is looking to take to fulfil the second language requirement?
French for sure. I took German in undergrad but obviously French is much more necessary. I'm thinking of taking the Rosetta Stone option, it seems like the most effective way to learn the language since everything will be online anyways.

How many of you are still moving to Ottawa? I'm still going, as I'd like to be near campus in the event that courses are online and I need to meet with anybody or do things in person (if possible). Also hoping that I can still find a Co-op next summer in Ottawa. Anyone else thinking similarly?

I really think the property manager is lying to you, to trick you into signing a lease now rather that in September or whenever you were actually hoping to start renting. I asked my partner (a lawyer here in Ottawa) if she'd heard anything like that, and she answered with a loud "hell no." The only thing that the province is suspending is evictions.
So apparently, his reasoning is that they can't get cleaners/maintenance to prepare units for new tenants, as of a protocol with the City of Ottawa... I told him that I would wait and will probably rent elsewhere. Thanks for all the help everyone!
-
I hope you're right! I'll press them further and see what's going on... Thanks.

Hey everyone,
Have you heard that the Ontario government has suspended all future rentals after May 1? I just found out through a property manager i'm speaking with about a potential apartment. My partner and I are still in Calgary, so that is pretty lame. I feel worse for any international students.
At the end of the day, we are all in the same boat. If this hold on leases continues past August, then our respective grad schools will have to adapt to accommodate somehow...
Sorry if i'm the bearer of bad news here. It was pretty anxiety-inducing when I heard this morning too.

Hey does anyone know when the deadline for accepting the NPSIA offer is? Or is there no actual "expiration"?
Because when I called uOttawa about their acceptance deadline they said that admission offers don't really expire- you just need to accept before the term starts.
You have 21 days after receiving your offer, at least thats what mine said.
-
I never realized that the DFP specialization just started in September. In any event, i'm happy it's a thing now.
-
I was just on the phone with Graduate Admissions today about some scholarships, and they said they have not received anything from NPSIA yet. They said that we will likely receive our official offers mid to late next week. NPSIA is probably still deciding how to allocate all the funding to its first round picks.

Grew up just outside of Calgary and did my first year of uni in Lethbridge before transferring to Carleton.

Yep born and raised. Whereabouts are you from?

The grad student pub, "Mike's Place" (named in honour of Lester Pearson) is pretty decent... nothing spectacular on tap, but the beer's alright and the food is probably the best on campus (especially the curries).
That sounds great but i'm actually in Calgary at the moment. For sure we can meet up once i'm in Ottawa in August!

Do you know when your status moved to recommended for assessment? I'm still at review in progress (but I finished my application 31 January).
Mine changed status back in January if I recall correctly. I really have no idea how their process works and if they start with people who submitted earlier or what.

The professor/supervisor will guide you through the material. I don't think they expect anyone to be an expert. Also, you've made it this far, don't sell yourself too short.
