I am also looking at buying a house, but only in the case of one of my school choices where the prices would be reasonable. For the reasons already mentioned, I would not consider a condo.

These policies vary per school. In many cases, the fellowship is for the academic year. But in others it is for the astronomical year. If it is not spelled out, it would be worth it to clarify that with the department. Summer funding would then be used to cover the "gap" period that you have without the academic year fellowship. Some departments fund students directly in exchange for research or such, and in other cases students must make a separate application to the university and compete with all grad students. In the cases I know of, you would apply for it in the Spring semester preceding the summer you need the funding.

I am still not sure. I am one rejection strong and waiting to hear from everyone else. I was just talking to all of my bosses about the possibility of staying in my positions should things not work out. They are all waiting for the results along with me.
-
I am sorry to hear that. I was really rooting for you. I am not feeling so hot now myself. The results have been coming in and still nothing on my end.
-
I see your point and you are correct. Perhaps I was tying a bit more in. In my case I was referring to students who fail to utilize the extra opportunities to get up to speed workwise with the expectations of the class. My first 3 sentences hold though. I have had students come to me with the effort bit before. And they did not heed suggestions to either take a lower prep-esque class, or utilize outside assistance I offered. Effort without the required result will still not get you an A

I think my heart had a small spasm when I saw this. That much a month, with 4 up front.

Haha you might be on to something there! I do start foaming at the mouth every time I see a JHU result posted while not having received mine yet

Oh boy do I know about this. I faced this before when teaching university freshmen. Let's say many got an F that semester. I think that attitude is ridiculous, and it does not instill good work ethic in the students. I still see it in the students, but fortunately not in any of the classes I teach.

what's the greatest number of rejections you've heard of?

Not really ridgey. I suspect the schools will recognize your talent for what it is worth. Now many people have the raw stamina to go from zero to sample in less than a week  -

Someone on this board a while ago posted 14 rejections I believe. What a major confidence blow. -
You should request an office with a window. On occasion, my favorite squirrel climbs through mine and we browse the forum together while sharing a sandwich. It makes great company when I feel like complaining about the long wait for results.

I sympathize!! I should be preparing my lessons and getting scholarships for my students in order! Argh it drives me crazy sometimes
-
I like it! Can us forumers get discounted tickets But anyway, I no longer do backup schools. I only applied to schools that I would actually want to attend. If I get turned down for them all, I will stay at my job. I am actually contemplating whether I should stay longer anyway.

Still waiting on JHU here also.

Oh please, I am not even going in for a third round with that ball. On the other hand, it did say I would have some nice dates this year. And I already had a really nice one, with a follow up tomorrow, so I can partially vouch for its accuracy. Let's hope it is not completely accurate though. OP your experience looks impressive, and you will likely get into one or more schools on the list. I echo linden about WWS. HKS MPP I am a little more optimistic about for you because of their larger cohort size. Financing the degree may be a problem though. Either way good luck.

If you anticipate feeling miserable at that school, then do not go. Just wait it out and reapply for F2010 programs instead.

Anyone Have an Ugrad Deg in something unrelated to PubAFF?
Dreams replied to golonghorns's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I do as well. Sciences and humanities here. I don't regret it though. I figure a field change will make me at least a little more well rounded! -
Nah cut em some slack Dubs! We have a lot of new members here lately and who knows, maybe they are GPA superstars

You could always relabel it as "master's level" and "doctoral level."

Yep most certainly was. This one appears to be a little more broken down though. Here is the old poll: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=14725

Not specifically PH related, but could be in a way. I was reading an article on JHU's recent hiring freeze and cuts and thought about it could mean for new applicants. Fortunately, the savings from the pay cuts JHU is instituting will be for student aid. There may still be hope there yet. http://chronicle.com/news/article/5977/ ... rators-pay On other news, JHU is one of the only PH schools that does not outline funding in too much detail. I am thinking they probably don't have to because of the sheer amount of research project there. To those who got an admit there, how did they outline funding?

Still waiting on my fate at one school. Let's hope they hurry up
