Bleh! Hmm we could persuade the high schoolers to take a gap year. But I don't know about the foreigners. Spread a propaganda campaign that tuition will be astronomically high with no hopes of funding. Wow talk about cataclysm. Then the universities would go bankrupt too!

We can all try to persuade Fall 2010 or 2011 entrants to hold off on grad school for a year and skip the GRE. The lack of income will force ETS to declare bankruptcy and shut down. No more GRE
  3. Good luck either way. Many of us here have been affected by this financial storm, and it is not easy to be the subject of a layoff.

Weren't able to incite enough of a riot in the Psychology subforum?
  5. Exactly. Which is why is helps to check with the university in question about those things, as I have suggested. Not all universities have the same policies. The terms of the assistantships are also typically spelled out in terms of number of credits that be taken under the assistantship and whether it would be taxable income. Also note the Op raised two different questions. The portion of her financial package waiving her tuition would not be taxable income because it is covering direct educational expenses.
  6. Trust me when I say I have worked in Higher Education long enough to understand the stipulations very well regarding tuition remission for all of the universities I have been affiliated with. There is a large policy difference between graduate students and employees.
  7. Mine also has that same completed in November 2008, gone to committee message. I figure I will hear something before mid-March. Man 20 days suddenly seems like a long time.
  8. IRS has a detailed section on this. The portion used for rent would be considered taxable. You should check the IRS site about this. I know many students though who do not pay taxes on any portion of their stipends and fellowships. But then again, they may not be aware that they should.
  9. It is not considered as income being spent on tuition, in which you would be eligible to deduct a portion via Lifetime Learning Credit. You are not spending your money on it. It is considered supplemental income by the university. There is definitely a difference.
  10. Oh SNAP! JHU sent out an Epi rejection.... via post. Hmm where is my mailbox key again?
  11. I love the not a sausage thing! As for the time it takes, these programs like to taunt us by dragging things out as long as they can. Also given that the members of the committees all have busy schedules, meetings can only really be scheduled when they all have the same period of free time. Sucks I know. As for the results page, outside of the Doom University and other entries, I would say they are a nice indicator of results. Nothing is perfect of course, so you take them as they are.
  12. I am a university employee. And if I get over a certain amount of money for tuition remission on graduate courses, then it counts as taxable income for me. So again, it varies by university policy.
  13. Hmm that's an interesting question. And it varies by university policy. Portions of educational awards that cover direct educational expenses (tuition, fees, etc) are not taxable. The iffy part comes in if you are a university employee. Then if your tuition reimbursement exceeds a certain threshold, then it may be taxable. You will likely not fall under this category since you will be a grad student. The only time you will need to check against it if you get a teaching assistantship or something. So I think you will be in the clear.
  14. There are several exceptions to the Warn Act. You may want to check DOL's website to be sure your company did not fall under them, and to see whether it supersedes any state law.
  15. You might want to check out the following forum. There have been some acceptances already. viewforum.php?f=15 Also if you do a more detailed search on the Results page, I am sure you will find a few more results.
  16. That's pretty terrible. How did it violate the Warn Act? Was it a mass layoff and you under a union? If so then they can act on your behalf.
  17. It's a new section. Congrats on your acceptances. Any idea where you are going? I know that CUSSW is very stingy with scholarships and such.
  18. Is this directed to foreign students coming to the US, US students going abroad, or for both?
  19. Aww what the hey, I will say right on the 13th for the MPA, with another batch for the MPP to come the following Monday.
  20. You are correct. She gave no details. So the wait continues
  21. Just got off the phone with a very nice lady from HKS admission. Brace yourselves folks... Dun Dun Dunnnnnnn!!! Nah no need to worry. Your decisions are coming soon. No more info is available.
  22. I think it depends on how that 1600 is distributed. Is it solely for the MPP program or does it include all of HKS' programs? If the latter, then that's not bad considering the average size of the entering class across all degree programs is over 500 students.

    40k day!

That's quite some feat. Pretty soon we will hit the magic 100,000.
  24. Very likely a lot. It's Harvard after all!!! Though you may get a look at the class profile sample on their site. http://www.hks.harvard.edu/degrees/admi ... s-profiles
  25. So if you actually get in somewhere, will you be able to complete it in May?
