  1. Hello Everyone! My application cycle went pretty much as expected. I got into almost every large public schools I applied to but did not get into any private schools. I wanted to get opinions on this forum so that I do not end up committing without thinking thoroughly. 1. Michigan- Ann Arbor: The stipend is decent with a fellowship for first year. It is a little more money but I still have to do TA (10 hours) and 20 hours starting from second year. 2. Penn State: The stipend is decent (slightly more than Michigan), but no teaching duties for first year. 3. NC State- Stipend is slightly less. But I love Raleigh. Location wise, NC State is the most preferable to me. Right now, I am leaning towards Michigan. But NC State is also a school worth considering. I am not excited about the weather in Michigan as I have spent all my life in subtropical regions. The lack of teaching duties at Penn State might give me a headstart. But again it is just a year, so may not have much impact in a long run. As of right now, I am not sure if I want to go to academia or industry. I have never worked in industry, so I would like to do at least one internship during my PhD. Thus, I am trying to optimize both prospects at the moment. Sadly, I do not have any strong preference about the area of research either as I have only taken couple of stats classes. However, just looking at faculty profiles, all there schools have a couple of folks that I would be grateful to work with. What are your opinions regarding these schools? What might be the pros and cons attending one over another?
  2. While looking at faculty almost all top 20 or top 30 schools, I did not see many faculty members who got their PhD from Carnegie Mellon. Does anyone have any idea about this? Being somewhat large and such a reputed department, I would expect at least couple of CMU graduates in the faculty of almost all top department. I wonder if this is because most CMU graduates prefer to go work in the industry.
  3. If we have not heard from Austin, should we expect rejection at this point?
  4. Got an offer from Michigan as well. Two good news on the same day after months of anxiety. Beyond grateful for their generous offer.
  5. Does anyone know if Duke send out acceptances in batches? I see some posts on survey site but I have not heard back from them. I assume it is a rejection at this point.
  6. I am an international student. 4.0 GPA, 168Q/158V, a year of real analysis including measure theory, a year of measure theoretic probability, couple of papers in pure mathematics lined up for publication, but undergrad from virtually unknown school in the US.
  7. Just got an unofficial acceptance from NC State in an email from Graduate program director. Finally some relief!
  8. I do not know about statistics, but in our mathematics department "Europe educated" usually means "obviously she is great." Of course, this need not always be true, but you sort of get a sense how European schools are viewed.
  9. They say it takes about two weeks. But, in my experience sending GRE scores, all the official scores that I reported were sent in less than a week. Take this with a grain of salt, but I think TOEFL is more of a requirement for official acceptance through grad school than an admission decision by the department. If you have self reported your unofficial score, then you can email the admission officer of the department and explain your situation.
  10. I have not been invited. I just saw that in grad cafe admission page. I would love to know that as well.
  11. Saw an interview invite from Berkeley statistics in the admission page. Is anyone else invited?
  12. this process has started my intellectual downfall. gotta doubt if I can go through my Ph. D.
  13. yo boy getting insane as well. need to get off this but cant help myself. hope this ends pretty soon?
  14. Based on previous trends, when do the first round of acceptances start to roll in?
  15. I have been comunicating with some students that are already in the programs I am applying to. Someone told me that out of incoming class of 12 in their school last year, 7 of them deferred their admission for Fall 2021. So, I will be competing for only 5-6 slots this year. This sort of makes sense but I just wanted to verify if this is the case for almost every program this year. All of you already attending Stat phd programs, would you be able to shed some light into this? On a side note, am I the only one taking things too seriously but graduate school applications is extremely stressful for everyone?
  16. I have been considering Michigan State as well. I have also been looking at UConn and they have pretty good strength in high dimensional statistics. But do you know how large is their incoming cohort size? They only list graduate assistants on their website and there are 57 of them but they do not mention if those assistants are masters student. However, their department also states that only PhD students get funding so I assume they are mostly PhD students. If they accept around 10 students a year, I would be happy to apply there.
  17. I ended up significantly revising my list. Do you all think Florida State and Pittsburgh can be considered safety for my profile? If not, can anyone suggest more suitable safety with decent cohort size?
  18. Yes, there are couple of professors who I would very much like to work with. But the wording of FAQs on their website is at best rude and at worst f**k you to the applicants. I am still weighing my options with Purdue.
  19. Yeah, I was surprised. CMU has always been my dream school and I probably checked more than 10 times until first week of November. But I did not check after that until this week due to final exams. I emailed them and the admission officer asked me to have the letters emailed to them rather than upload it on the portal. I could totally have misread but I wanted to check if anyone else noticed that as well. If it was the case, we will probably have some more people expressing that concern here as Dec 18 approaches.
  20. How have your background and life experiences, including cultural, geographical, financial, educational, or other opportunities or challenges, motivated your decision to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Michigan? This is a prompt of personal (diversity) statement of Michigan. I am a minority who grew up in a war plagued zone and had an uncommon childhood. I have also contributed to diversity in my role as a resident assistant in a college dorm. So, I think I have a decent non-trivial story to tell. However, I am a moron and spent all my time doing mathematics as a kid. And the only reason I am applying to gradschools is I enjoyed working on those problems and want to do so for the rest of my life. And Michigan has one of the best departments in the country, so of course I want to study there. But I am facing a solid writer's block in relating my background to decision of choosing Michigan. Is this part absolutely necessary? Can I just talk about my background and explain how can I contribute to diversity in Michigan? Is there anyone who wrote this statement to Michigan, really tanked it, and still got in?
  21. Is it only me who was misguided but Carnegie Mellon recently changed their deadline of application? I made a google sheet of all the universities along with their deadlines about a month ago, and came back yesterday after the final exams. Back then Carnegie Mellon listed their deadline as December 18, I checked their website last night and their deadline was Dec 1, which fortunately was moved to Dec 4 because of a system outage. I submitted the application in rush as I had most of the materials ready but I do not know when my references will submit the letters. Their website says that the letters need to be processed by the deadline. I just wanted to check here if I misread the deadline last month or was it moved half way through November. If it was changed, I wanted to email them and ask if they can extend the deadline for my letters for a week. But I do not want to embarass myself if the deadline has always been Dec 1.
  22. Thank you for your honest assessment. I knew I was over ambitious with those schools, but I am just taking chances. As long as I will get into couple of schools from my list, I am fine with spending couple of hundreds extra in application.
