  1. Interested in Political Economy, Institutional design, applied economics: really the intersection of economics, political science and policy. Applying to (Considering): Georgetown (Political Economy), Yale Jackson (Global Affairs) , Columbia SIPA (International Economic Policy), Pittsburgh MPIA (International Political Economy), Denver- Korbel (Global Finance, Trade and Economic Integration) and LSE (Political Science and Political Economy) Undergrad Institution: Average private school midwest (Top 250 undergrad) Years out of undergrad: 1.5 (by Fall 2021) GPA: 3.50/4.0 - Finance GRE: Unofficial scores: 163V 165Q AW (still awaiting I took the GRE last weekend) Quant Background: Intro Micro and Macro, Intermediate Micro, International Finance, Calculus I & II, Statistics. (I am also looking into Calc III and Linear Algebra before the fall) Relevant Work Experience: Thus far I've been a trader with an investment firm, Series 7 & 66 licenses if that means anything. I am trying to pivot my career and am looking into internships in spring and summer. (This is a major concern for me). Strength of LOR: Not sure- 2 possible LOR's from finance professors (another weakness) Ideally: I am interested in a Ph.D down the road in political science / public policy that has a strong economics component. Work: Researcher with think tank or institution such as: IMF, IFC, US Dept. State, Federal Reserve, World Bank, Peterson Institute International Economics (PIIE)... I have been contemplating this route or a pure economics masters as a stepping-stone for a PhD. I am leaning towards this route is more direct to the type of research I'd like to do after PhD, and because the coursework is more true to my interests. Thanks!
  2. Finance undergrad from a small U.S Private school. 3.5 GPA. GRE: Quant: 165 Verbal: 163. My graduate interests are inter-disciplinary (economics, politics and public policy). Political Economy and more applied economics. Regardless of the program I have noticed a glaring hole in my profile. My potential letters of recommendations. My undergrad courses are primarily in finance (derivatives, international finance, investments, etc.) I also took (intro micro and macro, and stats and calc I) I did well in all my courses but I can think of one professor I did exceptionally well with, the whole course was essentially a semester long project doing investment research for our universities endowment fund. The professor/director explicitly told me I was the best he's seen. My concern is that the recommendation would not be very pertinent to the interests I mentioned above. Unless programs are looking for potential regardless of it is DIRECTLY related to the program I am seeking admissions to? Aside from that, I do plan to take some courses in economics while I work-full time to bolster my transcript. Is it reasonable to expect to try getting a LOR from a professor when the course is 100% online? I am trying to address what I believe is my biggest weakness so any additional suggestions would be great. Thank you.
  3. Hello all. I am planning to pursue a terminal Masters's in economics in the fall of 2021. My undergrad was in finance with a 3.5 GPA and I achieved A marks in intro micro/macro. B in Calc I and B+ statistics. I currently work full time, and I am planning on taking Calc II during a winter term session online to set my self up for Calc III and Linear algebra in the spring to prepare me for grad school and help bolster my application. Thus far on my recent GRE practice exams, I scored a 166 Quant and 159 Verbal and plan to take it in a month. It was difficult to find rankings for terminal MA programs, but below is the seemingly best resource I could find. https://www.collegechoice.net/rankings/best-masters-degree-programs-in-economics/ Based on the limited information provided would someone be able to shed some light on my chances at a top program? My goal is to do well in the Masters and use it as a potential stepping stone for a PhD in economics. Additionally, any advice/suggestions would be tremendous. I am particularly interested in macro-econ and macro-finance / monetary economics. (role of money markets and repo's, banks & shadow banks, euro-dollars, financialization and globalization, international monetary system, etc.)
