  1. Thank you to everyone who regularly posts on this forum. I think that all of the information I gathered on here over the past year was a fundamental component of my successful applications! I declined two of my offers and have officially committed to a PhD program! Anyone else heading to UC Davis in the fall??
  2. I contacted the grad coordinator at my top choice institution and they were able to match my other offer. It was a pretty minor addition (just summer funding for 1 year), so that might be why he was so amenable to the request.
  3. Does anyone have strong thoughts about negotiating for more money when they have multiple offers? Will it reflect poorly on me if I ask my top choice program to match the funding of the best funding package I received? Or should I just be grateful I have funded offers at all? The difference between my top choice and top funding are not THAT different (mostly just summer funding), so I don't know if it is even worth it to ask at the risk of coming off as entitled.
  4. Please disregard my previous question. Literally 20 minutes after I posted, I got the email with my funding package. ?
  5. Has anyone heard about funding from UCSD yet? When I got my email about being admitted they said it would likely be a few weeks before they sent out funding packages. The few weeks have passed and I still haven't heard anything. Anyone else? (Feel free to DM.)
  6. Hi everyone. I have a few virtual recruitment events coming up in the next few weeks. I'm not even sure of what questions to ask at this point. Can any current PhD students share questions they wish they had asked or things they wish they had known before starting their program? Thanks!
  7. Hi all. Has anyone heard back from UC San Diego?
  8. I was accepted at UC Davis. I'm an Americanist with a focus on race, gender, and immigration. (Boston College rejected me - so I'm no help there!)
  9. I am an Americanist - 20th century gender, race, and immigration. What about you?
  10. Hi everyone! Did anyone here receive an acceptance from UC Davis? I'd love to connect if you did (and especially if you think you're planning on attending!).
  11. Hi everyone! I've applied to 7 PhD programs and have a question about contacts with POIs. I've had multiple email/zoom exchanges with the POIs from 2 of the programs. I have had very little contact with the POIs from the other 5 programs. 2 sent polite emails and then 3 didn't respond at all. Is it safe to assume that if I haven't had significant exchanges with POIs, they likely are not interested in my project and that admissions is unlikely? I recognize that it is impossible to know why POIs did not respond, but I'm trying to prepare myself for the worst. Thanks for any insight!
  12. As we're getting closer to application deadlines, I wanted to check in with everyone applying this cycle. Which schools did you end up applying to? How are you all feeling about the process and yourselves? I'm applying to all California schools: UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and USC. I'm feeling overwhelmed (still haven't finish all my applications), but also really proud of myself for going through this process during such a stressful and uncertain time. While I know that this is going to be a particularly competitive application season, I am thankful I didn't get discouraged and give up. I hope everyone is able to acknowledge the awesome thing that we've done. It is not easy to put yourself out there and we have certainly done just that. Congrats!
  13. @Sigaba thank you! @coffeehum I literally just saw that about 10 minutes ago. *sigh*
  14. Hi everyone! I've lurked on this site for quite some time, but this is my first time posting. I sent out emails to a handful of POI about a month ago. I heard back from most with either neutral or very encouraging responses. There is one that I haven't heard back from (University of Minnesota). If the POI hasn't responded, is it worth it to still apply? Or is that a good indication that they are not taking grad students or not interested in my work? Any insight would be greatly appreciated since I'd rather not take the time to go through the process if it is almost certainly a dead end. Thank you!!
