Counselling Psychology Applicants 2021 CANADA
Edge98 replied to psychstudent3's topic in Psychology Forum
Did anyone apply to UBC or UVic's MA Counselling psych program that did not do their undergrad in BC? If so can you PM me? I have some questions about their prerequisite courses. Thank you -

Counselling is still very competitive. Out of 100+ applicants they usually accept about 10-12 from what I've heard (this is for research-based programs). In terms of quality, you'd be getting strong training for sure, but with less of an emphasis on research. One thing to note is that counselling programs often focus on qualitative research instead of quantitative. The programs I've seen all offer training in assessment, intervention, and also add emphasis on cultural/group therapy. I can't necessarily speak for Ontario, but in western Canada you would register under your provincial regulatory body. So in Alberta that would be Alberta College of Psychologists (which you can do with a master's). I've heard that Clinical and Counselling training and job prospects are becoming more and more similar (this was from a clinical psychologist) and that the biggest difference is the emphasis on research.- 2,510 replies

I applied to both clinical and counselling programs. I am curious about responses to your questions as well. I'm pretty sure though that if you want to do a PhD in counselling psyc you need a thesis in your master's. I had an interview at a program recently and they said that PhD's are becoming more competitive so it's almost required that you do a thesis component in your master's. In terms of the last part of your question, I am also on the fence about this. Contemplating whether it is worth it to continue applying to clinical or if counselling programs would suffice, especially since my research interests are more on the neuropsyc side of things.- 2,510 replies

I'm pretty sure interview invites were sent out a few weeks ago. I heard this from a friend who got an interview and the two people who posted on the results page. -

This is probably way to early to ask this, but does anyone have any insight into whether the GRE will be required again for applications this fall? TIA- 2,510 replies

I think it is really hard to gauge whether or not you get into a program based on this. There are so many other variables that are taken to account when universities review applications (LOR's, SOP's, etc). It's common to be a very competitive applicant in terms of credentials yet not get interviews, or the other way around. Unfortunately, I think all you can do right now is wait. Ultimately they will make the decision and there is not much we can do about it besides what we put into our applications. Best of luck! -

I've been thinking about this as well. I am graduating this spring and am debating whether I should take a whole admissions cycle off and apply again in 2022 so I can gain plenty of relevant experience. Or maybe it is worth it to try again this fall. My only worry is that schools will bring back the GRE this fall and I'm not mentally prepared to go through that again right now haha. Current students, did you take time off before applying? if so, would you recommend it?- 2,510 replies

No one heard from Calgary this week? I wonder if they decided to push back the interview week? Or maybe invites were already sent out. -

I am wondering the same thing. I have spoken to two others who applied and they haven't heard anything yet either about Calgary. -

From what I've heard specifically about U of C is that the applications are reviewed by the committee (composed of core clinical faculty) and they rank applications form 1-3. The one's ranked as 3 are rejected, and the 1's and 2's (I think, it could just be 1's though) are forwarded to potential supervisors that were listed on your application. From there, they can interview to determine if they want you as a student. I'm not sure what happens after this, I think they make a recommendation to the committee based on their top choices.- 2,510 replies

Do school's email you when a decision is made (e.g. interview invite) or do you only see this through the portal? Just wondering if I should be obsessively checking as well haha- 2,510 replies

For those of you applying or who have applied to U of C, do you know whether the font size of your references matters for the research proposal? Mine is size 11, and if I make it 12 all my references don't fit so I'm wondering if I need to remove a reference if it needs to be size 12 font. Thanks!- 2,510 replies

Did you use your U of C proposal or CGS-M one for the U of C scholarship application?- 2,510 replies

You can modify your CGS-M if it can align with the professor you'd like to work with. But your overall proposal should be in line with their work and what you want to do during your graduate studies.- 2,510 replies

Hi! for the CCV, I added my in-progress honours thesis under "thesis and dissertations." However I noticed when I preview the CCV this shows up under publications, but my thesis is not published. Is it still okay to have this included or should I remove it? Thank you- 2,510 replies

I started in a diploma program over 4 years ago that I did not complete, would I include transcripts for that too? It seems irrelevant so I would assume no, but I thought I should check anyways. Thank you for your help Vanessa!- 2,510 replies

Is there a specific title we should have for our outline of proposed research document? Or can we just call it: "outline of proposed research" Also, in the CCV, do we included transfer credit? Even if it was added to our degree? Do we need to include ALL past post-secondary education, even if it was not completed or irrelevant to the application?- 2,510 replies
