2021 Application Discussion - Film & Media Studies / Cinema Studies
jkv152 replied to jkv152's topic in Humanities
Congrats! So it sounds like an informal interview just to get to know you a bit more regardless of your acceptance. That's so exciting. What other programs did you apply/get accepted to if you don't mind me asking? Berkeley is a dream for me. I'm still holding out hope!- 212 replies

From what I saw on the results page, someone had mentioned that PhD applicants will hear back in March.- 212 replies

I see, thank you for sharing. I was also concerned about limitations due to COVID, but we're all working through it. I applied to American universities exclusively. I'm married and I had to be mindful of my wife's career too. My interests are in psychoanalysis and queer theory. I've done a lot of work with Freud and recently I have spent time researching Winnicott, who focuses on infancy and early childhood. I'm particularly interested in queer family representation and finding a way to queer Winnicott's theory to fit modern families.- 212 replies

Congratulations! That's great news! I'm glad you got into your first choice. For the other programs you applied to, did you apply specifically to Italian studies with a concentration in FMS, or FMS with a concentration in Italian? I understand Yale is unique in the way they offer their combined programs.- 212 replies

I'm sure it's fine and you're not the only person who reached out ?
-
Also a followup question. Did you reach out to the English department directly for that information? I've been hesitant to reach out to FMS.
-
Thanks for the response. I applied to Comparative Literature and Film & Media. UC Berkeley is my personal top choice. I do hope they get back to us sooner. The wait is agonizing. I wish you the best of luck!
-
Anyone hear anything from the Yale combined program in Film & Media Studies? I see a few folks have interviews and one person was accepted. I haven't heard anything myself so I'm unsure if they're taking their time or if only one of the combined departments (English and FMS, e.g.) have reached out. Also just a reminder for any FMS/Cinema people, I created a 2021 thread here!

I wonder if it's due to covid? Universities are already under a lot of stress dealing with safety guidelines and teaching remotely (in some cases). Thank you for sharing this info about Berkeley. March feels so far away!- 212 replies

I applied to Comparative Literature and Film & Media. Also if you go to the top and select ‘Results’ it’ll bring you to the results page. Or just go directly to thegradcafe.com. You can search by school and see what results have been submitted publicly. It’s a blessing and a curse. I spend way to much time looking at results ?- 212 replies

2021 Application Discussion - Film & Media Studies / Cinema Studies
jkv152 replied to jkv152's topic in Humanities
Hey all, any Yale applicants? I saw that a few people received interviews and one person was accepted. I'm curious to know what departments the interviewees applied to. I'm wondering if it's for all of Film & Media studies or if they are specific to let's say, French and Film & Media studies.- 212 replies

Does anyone have insight as to how many people are admitted into each PhD program annually? I've seen/heard different things. Like UC Berkeley only admitting three students and NYU admitting four students. Any info would be appreciated!- 212 replies

From what I understand it is heavily focused on theory and history. I also believe they had a course specifically tailored for film studies and pedagogy. It does not hurt to reach out to the department directly and ask them if they support students with your interests!- 212 replies

Welcome everyone! I do think it's a bit premature to expect anything back. I'm surprised I heard from UCSB as early as I did. I would think on average universities may start notifying next week. I don't know if I can stand to be patient through March. The waiting is killing me as I'm sure it is for all of you- 212 replies

Best of luck to you! I thought about Northwestern but I had to be respectful of my wife. She supports me pursuing a PhD but wants at minimum to continue living on the coast. East or West, it doesn't matter. Do you know when Northwestern has historically informed applicants?- 212 replies

If you are looking for a Film & Media Studies / Cinema Studies 2021 application thread, I created one which you can find here
-
Hi all! I searched the forum and I could not find a topic specific to Film & Media Studies and/or Cinema Studies. I named the thread with both titles for the sake of keyword search. As you all know programs adopt different names. Please use this space to discuss applications, decision anxiety, research and whatever else you see fit! I applied to these programs: UC Berkeley Yale NYU University of Washington, Seattle USC University of California, Santa Barbara I've only heard back from UCSB and unfortunately I was rejected. I'm holding out hope for the others. It only takes one school! What schools have you applied to?

Yeah, it was the Film & Media Studies PhD program. I have a feeling I wasn't a good fit for their department research-wise. I did add the decision to the results page. I am hopeful and I have a feeling I'll hear back from one or two schools this week! Thanks!
-
I heard back from my first program and unfortunately it was a rejection. UCSB wasn't my first choice, but a rejection still sucks. I'm not taking it personally. I'm sure there were other candidates who were likely a better fit for the program. I'm waiting to hear back from 5 other schools. I just need one. Good luck to everyone!

This is very helpful, thank you! My GRE score isn't terrible, but it certainly isn't as strong as what I've seen posted on this site. My LORs, writing sample and statement of purpose are by far my strongest assets. I'm very happy to hear that. This news perked up my day. Now I just have to get through this painful period of waiting
-
How do you all feel about the weight that is going to be placed on GRE scores (for the programs that require it)? I know this is really dependent on your field of study. As someone in Arts & Humanities, less than half of the programs I applied to required the GRE. Given the pandemic, I'm wondering if my score will really matter in a potentially more competitive applicant pool.
-
I'm starting to see calls for acceptances for some schools. Do you all usually assume that if you haven't received a call for an interview or an acceptance, it's usually a rejection? Or do you hold out hope. Curious to know how you all interpret it.
-
I have diagnosed anxiety but I must say, this waiting process is causing my anxiety to sky rocket. I've been having nightmares and trouble sleeping. All I can think about these days is hearing back from programs. I know I have to exercise patience, but I'm sure I can speak for many of us in saying that it is a lot harder to put it into action. I can't stop obsessively checking the results on here. Thank you all for providing an outlet and a community here on this forum. Glad to know I'm not alone

Nice! I applied to the PhD program at Washington. Do you know when we expect to hear back? I’m curious if they send out all acceptances/rejections for both MA and PhD at the same time. Good luck to you!
