  1. Well have you thought about doing a masters first since you will still have to go extra years even if you went straight to phd? Another thing is there's about a five percent acceptance rate at best. So even if you are the perfect fit, it still involves luck. So be prepared to apply to lots with a low success rate. The most important thing is fit and what have you done to show this and then recs and then everything else. Also keep track of what scores each school requires on gre since all you need to do is reach that min. Also, its about who you studied under not where you go so ivy isn't so important. I know of the perfect school for you based on interest but its not ivy but you could get a better job since they have tremendous job placement in both academia and private.
  2. If you want you phd I would stay in the US. US schools like masters from the US and I wouldn't consider a phd outside the US since I only want to work in the US.
  3. Its nor a bad idea but honesty you are pushing the time frame for early december even if you take it late october. To be sure I was able to get my scores to the schools I would take it no later than Oct. 16th because yes you get the verbal and quant scores that day it takes a month to get the writing score. And then the way the send out the scores, Once a month they give the school a disk with all scores requested for that school. So lets say you take it late october and they send the scores on November 15th and December 15th. Any due dates before the 15 of december will mean you scores being sent late.
  4. Go to a non US school and you don't need to take it but I have never heard of a phd program in the US not requiring it
  5. I say as soon as you know where you are applying ask. Nothings wrong with giving them to much time but be prepared for them to wait till the last minute.
  6. To do analytical chem you need to take instrumental analysis, both physics that are calc based along with both ochems for majors along with pchem for majors that are calc based. If you did that I could be certain that you would get into a ton of schools for phd any outside top 60. But these are needed classes and you couldn't do it without these.
  7. Some programs require masters then phd some you get masters on the way to phd then some like chemistry don't require a masters at all.
  8. Well, what classes did you take? Most schools only allow u to not have taken three of the following, advance inorganic, advance organic, instrumental analysis , both pchems, and two semester of calc based physics.
  9. No one can tell you if your get in until you apply and get your answer. Everyone based their decision on different criteria. One thing I can tell you is look for the best fit.
  10. With gre its mostly all about combined scores . Elitest schools like ivy and wanna be ivy requires 1200 and most schools in big 10 require 1200. Most big east schools require 1100 but all schools tell you what they require but it may take some time finding it. Rule of thumb besides east coast schools and elitest schools, as long as you broke a thousand you are fine. It's mainly about fit, personal statement and recs.
  11. Well yes you can try but a lot of times people are busy during the week. What I do is I do school stuff sun thru Friday at 5. Then from 5 on Friday until Sunday is family time. Mind you I do chores and some evenings during the week but school has priority during that time. Mind you my assistant takes up 20 hours a week so if you don't have that you may have more flexibility.
  12. Just say hi my name is Jane doe I'm interested in ...... and have done .......... I'm interested in your research and was wondering if your taking any students this coming year
  13. Classes have me down

  14. Well it depends on what schools you want. Some schools require 1200 to be looked at and by my count you got an 1190 so for those you would need to take it again and some funding goes by gre so for that you want it in the 1300 range. But besides that theirs no reason to take it again.
  15. If you are worried leave it in the car or take a small bag, and turn it off and put the bag in the locker. I was able to just openly leave my cell phone in the locker on off
  16. Profs chose sites base on interest, being asked to join a group, or because that's whats their advisor did. When people chose their interest, its based on that's what their interested in or a prof studies a specific area of interest and you develop your craft with an area and you stay there.
  17. If you can find any reason to reference a book then keep it. I threw my under division books away and regretted whenever I want to reference them. By throwing away I mean sell back for pennie.
  18. Fields schools are generally done during summer may thru Sept. They are generally no more than a month but sometimes shorter or longer. Profs due them to recoup some of the expenses for their research like visa's and permits. Profs must always be doing research and publishing until at a min their tenure. Look at schools websites to find them
  19. In chemistry I know it matters who Ure mentor knows. But acs only matters for the top 20 so only do that if u are sloping to top 20 schools like Texas and unc
  20. Cuny has a good reputation in anthropology. However phd is more about what you did there and who your adviser is since they can open doors for you. In that field rankings are to general so don't just rely on them.
  21. Some programs ask for all 3 to be academic and sometimes just 2. As for asking, make an appointment and ask. If you sense any hesitation move onto others
  22. Every school, program, and professor.are.did$reengineering and looks for different things. So no one actually knows.
  23. UNO has a horribly reputation as a whole
