Cschwartz- Don't worry they won't think your a failure. My advisor was pissed off I got full rejections my first time but not at me. She couldn't understand why they rejected me. I'm glad I didn't get in. I actually applied to schools that weren't good fits. I got in on the second round to my first choice so sometimes things happen for a reason.
It is very common not to get in your time for grad school. More so for phd than masters though. Out of of undergrad, my experience is about 5% get into a masters program and then 5% of masters get into phd. More people are applying for the same number of spots.
Wanted to add that somewhere on their websites they post what score you should be at or above. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds to find sometimes it takes 45min to find.
Contact them and just ask about their research and if they are taking students. I plan on pming you later when I have more time about the other topic. Don't tell them why your a good fit they should have no problem seeing it if its there.
Graduate school is tough to get into. Masters is easier than phd but then again I was the only one out of 26 to get into grad school six years ago for my masters and now I'm in the process of getting my phd. I would recommend applying to 8 schools with 1-2 reaches and there aren't any safety schools out there. Your gre is low if you want funding.1200 is a good goal if you want funding and below 1100 does exclude some schools that you can apply to. What's your focus? Maybe I can suggest some schools for you. But every school accepts by different standards so hang in there. No one can tell you either way until you hear back from the schools.
A masters only help. A lot of programs with both a masters and a phd won't let you do both. I only know of a couple that requires you do both there. A lot of programs that let you do both will count your masters towards your coursework. I went the same route masters one place and now phd a different place.
Let's say you take it Nov.10th. Two weeks for aw score. That's the 24th. Let's day they sent out that schools scores on the 15th of the month it wouldn't be there till Dec 15. It just depends in the cycle and when they send out the scores for that school. When I was applying everyone role me Oct.31 was the last day to make sure I made my mid Dec. Deadlines.
The scores aren't official until the the aw is done. The ers sends the scores out to schools once a month through flash drives. So that's why it can take 6 weeks. I would allow 3-6 weeks for a school to get my results. Can't expect sooner or later than that.
Your gre is great but not great for those schools. Those scores might even below average. Also I don't consider brown or Rutgers to be backup quality. If it is necessary for you to go this year I would put a lower school on the list just to increase your chances.
I completely agree with the above poster. I've always noticed they enjoy questions. However do your homework. If they study abc and you just talk about xyz that may make it so you don't get in under them. I do know of places that if you don't visit you don't have a shot of getting in.
