  1. Now would be a perfect time to call. They accepted you so as a department they want you. Plus, how can you decide on which school without contact?
  2. This is a conversation you need to have with him. No one on here can decide for you. It is a personal decision that you must make and I think talking to him would be best. After saying all that, would you resent him for the rest of your life? If say something happens and you two break up where would that leave you? Being married or even engaged is different than just dating. Would you have to move where he got a job once you graduate or would he move to where you got a job? These are the types of questions you should consider.
  3. It seems this year you guys are lucky. Programs are getting back to the applicants about a month earlier than when I applied.
  4. If you want to do anything, I think calling a graduate secretary would be best. But it's only feb. I would wait a month
  5. Your get loans to cover cost of attending but that's all for grad school whether you worked or not
  6. Even if they had a 3.0 min all it takes is for the chair to write a letter on your behalf and once the department accepts you the chair doesn't have a problem doing this
  7. Sorry I do not know anything about those programs. I know about some from my friends who are applying while finishing up their masters at my school and some from contacts I have made at various schools. I generally come on here on my way home from school because I know how I felt when applying and I try to help whenever I can
  8. If it's bad news, allow him to vent to you. Also, don't get mad if he is cranky for a few days after. Maybe make his favorite dinner. If he gets in, which hopefully he does, take him to his favorite restaurant and discuss the upcoming mood followed with a celebration.
  9. No contacts with asu this year, but I do know for a fact they have an unofficially waitlist. Also, the whole school is having major budget issues and the anthropology department can't take on as many as they want. But I know they still admit people, they just have to be even more selective who they take.
  10. Go with the better school especially in English. In anthropology, rankings are less important and your adviser is more important. I took less money but after the first semester I was given unique opportunities and actually bring in more money each year than I would of gotten.
  11. In biological field schools aren't to important but bioarch programs they are. It's not just the times you publish or present it's also where.
  12. Well, field schools are good. And a good sop would be good. I got into four programs four programs and turns out at least one of my recs had a close personal relationship with the adviser who accepted me. I worked hard getting a great relationship with my recommenders and did alot of extra work for them. I also presented and got things published. Also, I paid to visit potential schools before I applied to male sure they were a good fit.
  13. I'm on the archaeology side getting my phd.
  14. Archaeo- Perfect description of the field and how it works. One thing I thought I would add its not so much about the school ranking as how is your advisor respected in the field
  15. Research proves your interest. Plus, extra research experience with publications and/or presentations can never hurt.
  16. Well mail can come on saturday
  17. Everyone has great grades. Gre only matters for handful of programs and then just meet the cutoff for the rest. Do research and pick programs that fit you rather than you try to fit into the program. Fit matters the most.
  18. Only way it would be a no is if it's for the exact advisor as you and it's just an admission interview initiated by the prof.
  19. Mutual- I don't know what they mean but its common in our field always to progress and not regress. You go to an undergrad school, go to at least slightly better masters and even slightly better phd. Mind you if you are at the high it's ok to be lateral just don't regress in the quality of the program. About SOP's I am confused by what they mean. All I know is everyone looks for different things. So just because one prof likes aka doesn't mean the next prof will like it. For SOP's I say do the best you can and move on. Once submitted don't look at it again.
  20. Whatever you do don't say well you really didn't want to go there did you?
  21. They are updated each year but they don't change that much. I never bought the books. A good practice is go and spend like an hour at a bookstore. Get a coffee and bring pen and paper and write down the prgrams for free. However, you can do it at home online also. It just takes longer.
  22. Im sorry you are having an awful experience. I can assure you what you originally thought does exist. My undergrad was kinda separated from grad students. My masters was actually easier than my undergrad but the social scene was there. Good cohort and we had lots of fun. Now phd, its harder academically but social life is fun. As a cohort we have fun and hang out. Mind you when I say have fun and hang out its like once or twice a month which is perfect due to the rigors academically and time I spend with my spouse
  23. There are books you can buy that list every program for every subfield at the bookstore
  24. Good luck everyone in the middle of the monster storm in the usa
