School wants a quick decision
anthropologygeek replied to socihealth's topic in Decisions, Decisions
That list only applies to funding not offers. Schools can do whatever they want and they most likely will give you an extension. -
Some people just don't come on the forums. And postal mail can come at various times. I know when I was applying I saw results like 8 days before I got mine do to where we lived but now I think a lot of schools are going to email which should standardize it. However their are wait list and once someone says no they go to the next name and this process could take months.

You may want to chose a few more schools. No school is a guarantee and I have heard of good students going there so they do get good applicants.
-
Armadillo- yeah in business, law or something like that new leaf might be right. Plus the so called elite schools new leaf is referring to all focus on the same things, and l have zero interest in those things.
-
New leaf- yes I'm getting my phd and those decisions are for phd applicants. I will admit I was surprised by this as well but it made sense why I got my letter so soon after the deadline.
-
Zillie- Couldn't agree more.
-
New leaf- Actually being from one school won't be the deciding factor. The applicant is the deciding factor and if the nyu student was lazy for four years they would not get in over the person from Boise State who work hard for four years. For undergrad it doesn't matter the university it's what you did. This is coming from a person who went to the small university for undergrad and is now in the middle of the top program in m field for my phd.
-
Sorry people from my program uses this site so I can't which one it is but I know my program does. They actually look at every app as it comes in.
-
Wow just want to say how arrogant people on this have become and to say in my field I have yet to meet someone at conferences or in my school or and very little have been written in a journal from nyu. Just saying school focus on very specific things and honesty you know how many recs they are writing both from students from their university and everyone they have encounter at field schools and etc. The more so called famous someone is the more recs they write. Not to mention everyone has enemies. And everyone have programs who will reject you because they hate one of your recs. Professors love some professors and hate some just like everyone does.
-
Yes you can go back as long as you went to at least 2
-
I know of schools that send out acceptances one day after the deadline.
-
You should not go to your undergrad institution for grad school. It's academic imbreeding and career suicide. You need at least two different schools and three is prefered. You need to be well-rounded and you only get one point of view instead of two or three.
-
Believe the results page. It might make you feel better to think it's a lie if they don't post here but most people never come on the forums. Why would someone lie? Not saying it's impossible for someone to lie, just saying it's not very likely and don't assume they lie because they don't post here.

Professor acceptance vs school acceptance
anthropologygeek replied to adelashk's topic in Applications
It depends on the school and how the operate. At some the committee has to accept you at others professors accept you. And no, some schools do not do interviews and if they do do interviews and you didn't get one there's nothing wrong keeping hope alive. -
One ghost ing about funding, you don't know all the circumstances at the school tille you go. I'm a perfect example of not taking funding to go where I want and to get even more money once I got there. So I'm one for not making funding a priority vs the one who does. You must decide what matters most to you and don't look back.

Application process hints
anthropologygeek replied to anthropologygeek's topic in Anthropology Forum
No problem. Just thought I would try to help in the process for others since I know how miserable it can be. I hope the best of luck to you all. -
Every school will post their min. gpa required. Once you meet that your good on that front. Fit and sop are the most important things. I can give you a list of 50 school but only you know what your interest are and what's important. I recommend going to the results board under anthropology and looking at every school and deciding that way.

If you apply to forensics I would wait and see about tennessee. Huge shake up recently and they are getting all new physicals so who knows how that will be. A couple of schools strictly forensics that you didn't mention is Michigan state, Chico state (masters only but good despite being at chico state), hawii, a couple Canadian schools I forget the name of. My advice would be to do bioarch and then do forensics on the side. This will open you up to many more job opportunities.

Depends on the school and/or the professor. Some rely on departments and some fund their own. Some school guarantee funding some don't. So just look at the school department site and they should tell you.
-
Spunk- there isn't a school like that. They all get ap locates and they are all competitive. When I was applying for my masters I thought hey I'll apply to this one school to ensure I get in. Little did I know that school accepted one student at least said that in my rejection letter. Luckily I got into other schools and now I'm in a phd program. I did not vote down that post but maybe this was their reason to?
