  1. I'm in my third year and will have all my research done by June. I'm currently doing my research made possible by a grant I applied to last February. This will put me on pace to graduate within 4 years
  2. Head cold- I have noticed cultures do take longer than physicals due to the difference is research and a major actor is getting the correct approvals. Also, since you are dealing with live people vs dead people research tends to take longer
  3. Any money made in the US is taxed by US and any money made in New York is also taxed in New York. Be happy, I don't think your make enough so you should get money back from both and not have to pay.
  4. I know when I was applying for phd in spring 10 they didn't have one or advertised they had one
  5. If the school does interview it's not good for you. However did you apply to work for same poi? If not certain poi can interview while others don't t a school. Lets hope for that situation.
  6. I sent all. If you don't send all its a reason they could kick you out
  7. Aailee- I would find a new rec if it was me. As for errors one little grammar error won't kill your app. I doubt they will even notice.
  8. Be a member to a lot of organization and read the monthly journals
  9. Radio- I highly recommend this since most schools don't interview and how can you make a life changing decision without visiting?
  10. Depending on the program determines how many years of classes. Most are two years of classes if entering with a masters, then a year to do research, a year to write and defend so four years if you have enter with masters if not then add 2 years so six.
  11. Well, where your parents went to college has nothing to do with your app so I would leave that out. And yes you should generally know what you want to do for your thesis.
  12. Well my program only allows people with masters in the phd program. If you apply without a masters you will only be considered for the masses progam
  13. My school is in the process of review and should be sending out replies why end of the month if their history is any indication.
  14. If they don't do anything related how can they help as a resource? Lucky for me my department is full of profs with similar interest one reason I decided to come here.
  15. The way I look at it when doing apps is I put myself in their shoes. Since it is all done electronically they know how many words there is. And first impression of not following directions would make me think twice about an app so I stayed bellowed limit
  16. Sure, they can be resources to you while you're there.
  17. There's a lot you can do with the phd in archeology with a specialty of underwater. You may concentrate yoursearch to schools with easy access to the ocean though
  18. Mp- some places interview, some Skype interview and others don't interview at all
  19. Good luck to all of this years applicants. Quoting a recent movie, may the odds forever be in your favor. I found this website useful when I was applying and once you turn in all your apps try to relax. I know that's easier said than done. One thing you can do is go to the results page and see about when the schools have previously sent out the responses. Schools generally follow the same time schedule year after year but every year there are exceptions so don't read to much into it.
  20. Most people reieve positive feedback who applies. If you receive negative feedback most likely you won't apply. A prof can't decide until he sees the whole app.
  21. Each department is different. I would email current students at ucsb or maybe a current one visits this site
  22. Actually this was a nice letter by your department. I put in about 80 hours and my free time is spent reading up on the literature. 2 articles should be the min. Everyone should thank your department for this letter and it shows they care about your future. If they didn't care they wouldn't of sent it. But to get jobs this is what it takes and you think it gets easier after school? A phd should be your passion and should always be on your mind. Even when I'm not working I'm thinking about my subject
  23. Taco time- I have never heard of this high of rate. At one of the schools I got into when applying for my phd they stated they whole anthropology department accepted 10% of people that applied. Also where I got my masters told everyone they accepted 5% of people. And my undergrad a diver said my undergrad accepts 5-10%. I've never heard of a 50% acceptance rate or I would of definitely applied to those places as safety schools. And I know a lot of people who would apply to there because they are having trouble getting in anywhere.
  24. New Leaf- The only reason I am allowed to do my dissertation is due to a relationship my advisor has spent a career forming and yes it is groundbreaking because no offense my advisor is the top of their field in my specialty. And like I have said on this forum I do not know if it's true for all fields in anthropology but I do know for physical and biology the top of the fields are not at Michigan or a UC. They are scattered all throughout the country and just so happens aren't on the west or east coast. And yes I'm going to have to work for a job but my advisor track record tells me if I stay on my current course and keep doing the things I'm doing I am going to be able to get a job. And knowing an advisor track record with his former students and what they do after the graduate should be included in your decision to go to a certain school or even apply to a certain school.
