About gre scores- look and see what the cut offs are for each school. Every anthropology department has this info somewhere on their websites. If you meet the minimal your fine. Profs could care less about the gre but departments and schools won't let you in if you don't meet the min. And most likely poi won't even see you app if you don't meet the min. About Personal Statement- Talk is cheap. Saying your awesome doesn't mean anything. Proving your awesome is so much better. Don't say I'm interested in apples when you can prove your interested in apples. As for Ivies who cares. Their not the end all. In anthropology, it's all about who's your advisor is and connections. I know for a fact my dissertation would be impossible if I went anywhere else. Also, if you look around hardl any of the top people in most fields actuall work in an iy league school. Culture might be different since I know basically nothing about that field but any of the others I know that this is the case. Find the best school that fits your interest and go for the best in your specialty. Some people here will disagree with this because they are blinded by the ivy league and school name but this is reality. Think of any sub-field and find who's the best in that subfield and they won't be teaching at an ivy. Again my disclaimer is I don't know much about culture anthropology besides taking the minimal in that subfield

A Question about the application process
anthropologygeek replied to Maxx's topic in Political Science Forum
Max- depends on school and department. Most have committees who weed out the auto nos and then pass it along to the desired prof -
How you do on the gre will be very important. Try to make sure your above 3.0 when you apply due to that being most magic number at least. Be prepared for no funding since most schools fund people off old gpa and gre's. Depending on how much student loans you have I would think hard about taking more. I know people with over 200k and I just feel bad for them. They will be paying it their whole lives and will struggle.

how long before your grad program starts can you take out a loan?
anthropologygeek replied to a topic in The Lobby
The same as undergrad. Every school is different but don't count on it before the semester -
Explaining switching fields to Anthro
anthropologygeek replied to lasgirl's topic in Anthropology Forum
By stating what you want to study basically should explain in itself the reason for switching fields -
Usmiv- your data is old. Romney has a 7 point lead in Florida based on a yahoo article today.what I mean is. Maybe not at this exact moment but it's momentum. Every yahoo article was pro Obama and anti Romney along with the indi vote. Since the first debate, a lot of indi votes are going Romney instead. And since the debate every article on yahoo has been pro Romney. Americas believe what they see on yahoo. I'm sorry I offended you but get ready for Romney as the next president. Obama even apologized for sucking in the debate and ryans vs Biden is tonight and Ryan is a great debater. Romney already has 135 electoral votes in the bag so much so media outlets aren't even doing exit polls in those states vs Obama 35. And that does not count forida or Iowa which will go republican this year due to democrats losing 8.6,Florida, and 6.8,iowa, percent of their registered voters and republicans actually gained registered voters in those states.
-
I'm all for new candidates but the trend right now is Romney will win based on the numbers. Obama was in the league till he laid a goose egg in the debate and then Ryan will destroy Biden Thursday since oaken almost beat him and according to a lot of people did beat him four years ago. For polling you on,y need to look at one number independents. Combine that they are leaning Romney way now with the fact more and more democrats are switching to independent and republicans than vice versa you know Romney will be our president in 2013 for better kor worst.

Bioarchaeology schools with Pathology and Isotopes
anthropologygeek replied to Cmillmbs's topic in Anthropology Forum
Reading this at first with just isotopes I thought of asu. However, there are more universities that do this. -
How are my scores for bioarchaeology program?
anthropologygeek replied to Cmillmbs's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
What is that compared to on the old one? If above 1100 you should be fine for this schools. -
Are you applying for masters or phd? I am pretty sure all three require a masters before you can apply for the phd program and at least one of them you must agree that if they want you for a phd your go there but if they don't then you can go elsewhere.
-
American students also get a master first. All the phd programs I applied to required a master first. And at those places it varied 4-10 years. Some phd programs require 4 years of just classes while others it's two years. It's up to your adviser on how long it will take.

self-reporting GRE scores, cherry-pick highest?
anthropologygeek replied to iowaguy's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
Now you can cherry pick in the past every score went -
why do you need to apply earlier than the deadline?
anthropologygeek replied to a topic in Applications
Some fields/universities have rolling adminstrions. Besides that it doesn't matter. And ga isn't a separate app but fellowships can be -

good schools / good reads for political anthropology
anthropologygeek replied to coffeeandmilk's topic in Anthropology Forum
Go to any school you can think of and go to the anthropology department and look at all the profs profile and see if their interest align with you. I know it's a lot of work but it will be worth it. -
It depends on your program. I knw programs it will take a min of ten years to graduate and I know I will be done within four years but I did enter with a masters already. It's really up to the university on how long your there and then your drive to graduate.

Easiest grad program to get into with funding?
anthropologygeek replied to gradschoolgimp's topic in Applications
Forgot to put into my comment you need a bs in the field you go into for hard sciences which isn't easy to do. But one you do, there's so many universities with so many spots I would say it's easiest. But then again a lot of the programs wil, lead to jobs you could of gotten with a bs -

People with masters only can only be an instructor, you must have a phd and luck to be a professor

What Rankings are Available for Socio-Cultural-Anthro?
anthropologygeek replied to kphd's topic in Anthropology Forum
I would find the programs I would want to go to with perfect fits and only apply there. The point of a phd is to be marketable afterwards or why else get one. -
What Rankings are Available for Socio-Cultural-Anthro?
anthropologygeek replied to kphd's topic in Anthropology Forum
Well, do you just want a phd or a phd that leads to a good job. You should only apply to programs that will make you grow in whatever specific area you are interested in. I know universities outside of the USA where if you apply and will pay the tuition your in. -
What Rankings are Available for Socio-Cultural-Anthro?
anthropologygeek replied to kphd's topic in Anthropology Forum
The only true rankings were done in the early 90s and only ranked the university that signed up to be ranked which meant a lot of universities were left out.
