  1. Krame-for the four hat graduated what jobs did they get? Which one would provide you a job which you want? That is the only question you should be asking.
  2. Your in, they just must write a letter to grad school office maybe an exception for your low gpa thus they need to know if they should go through the trouble
  3. If you want to teach go to the American school unless its Toronto or Albany.
  4. My current funding is 14k for 9months with option to teach the summer that adds 4k to it.plus a renewable fellowship every year that adds 4k a semester so 26k a year plus free healthcare and dental.
  5. Once you have officially accepted some ramifications occur. 1. You could legally be required to pay for the first year tuition even if you do not attend however they rarely make you do this but it has happened. 2. Your reputation will forever be ruined. This is a small society so be careful. Profs know other profs and so on. Who knows what you will need in the future like maybe a job. Best thing to do is ask for extension. If hey decline either accept and plan on going or decline.plus why accept before deadline unless your going? April 15 is the most common deadline but only applies to schools that signed the letter for it. If they are not a member they can make their deadline whenever they want.
  6. That deadline is for funding offers only not admissions
  7. Not very important. TA positions does not add value to your cv for tenure jobs. It's when you must design the class from scratch and are the only one teaching where it matters
  8. I looked at the faculty of every university to see if there was a fit
  9. Radio- I am perfectly happy even though I second guess myself all the time.
  10. I just wanted to add no matter where you choose you'll always have second thoughts even a few years later like me? It's the curse of having multiple offers.
  11. Rapang- thanks for posting masters with funding. A lot of people here tell people masters are just cash cows for the department while I know it's not the case
  12. Rapang- are you sure about washu? I've personally seen friends, master studemt at my school, acceptance letters.
  13. The people who hate it drop out. Grad school is tough and not for everyone who applies and gets in. I currently work 12-16 hours a day with breaks in there most of the time. If I don't have class, which I don't anymore, there's research, reading journals, applying for grants, searching for grants to apply to, emailing students back, group meetings, office hours which I do everything else in since no one actually comes 99% of the time, applying to conferences, gettin prepared for conferences when abstracts ae accepted, writing manuscripts to journal to try to get publish, writing corrections ounces reviewed, or any of the misc things I'm forgetting. It's grueling and this tough if you want a decent shot at any decent jobs.
  14. About funding, the school is not your only source and it is the least beneficial source there is. Getting the other sources is alot tougher and a lot more work.
  15. Shockwave- yes, program rank means nothing. The last ranking was 93 and only including the schools that asked to be included so that ranking is worthless. As for program, a program may be ranked high because of culture and if your physical it means nothing. From experience adviser means everything. However, if you don't plan on working hard it means nothing. Most grad students are lazy and just happy to be there. They go through the motions and then graduate and say now where's my job. It's hard work but adviser with connections is also a must.
  16. Sweet pearl-I'm at a relative new phd program and at least one student under my adviser has gone on to a tenure track job after the first five years of the program. So I don't think it matters how young a program is as long as the reputation is there with the adviser
  17. Grad programs isn't like undergrad. No grants just student loans, assistantship(from university), or fellowships(must apply for and be selected).
  18. Jonathan- I believe I've heard they are done but I don't know that personally just from friends getting masters applying there for phd
  19. Wow and- I recommend you and your husband sit down and figure out who's career to make the priority because its almost impossible not to move around a lot in this field
  20. Do you just mean traveling outside the US or period. Because travel is a must for any academic due to conferences and even to look at collections but for research you most likely will have to leave the US
  21. Penn state has a very good reputation for archeology.
  22. NBC- I disagree. Advisers mean everything. I know this from experience. And yes for my specialty my adviser literally wrote the book on it so I'm learning from the best in my field with many connections. And those connections are already paying off for me.
  23. Wish- I feel it's all about your adviser. Go wherever you adviser would be best. They can open many doors for you.
