  1. Daisy- you shouldn't apply to a safety schools. One university you are guaranteed to get into is an Austrian school that accepts all but funds no one. But why go they can't get a job when they graduate. You should only apply to programs your a perfect fit for. Pears- UNLV is a Huge name in southwest archeology and I hope to end my career as a tenure professor there due to this. This is if I ever make my way back west which is seeming less likely by the moment.
  2. In anthropology, at least physical or bioarch side,it's all about your advisor and what research opportunities you have there. UNLV USA good school but not a safety school. They have around a 5-10 percent acceptance rate.
  3. To calm some fears, I'm in an American university and its my fourth year and I am graduated at the end of this academic year which means four years is very possible and I'm living fact of it
  4. Sarab- thanks. It makes putting in the last push hat much easier.
  5. Well, I plan on visiting this next year when I'm taking grad students since my job I got after graduation makes it mandatory to take grad students
  6. depends, need more info. Some fellowships are in place of the assistantship and others are on top of the assistantship. Either wait to see if you got it or just email the department
  7. I have a friend who got accepted at the end of march in culture to the phd program so don't lose hope
  8. Cola- I know MSU likes to send results out after a specific conference due to an unfortunate rejected student going up to a prof at the conference and yelling at them. Also- snail mail isn't all bad. I actually gotten acceptances both ways and I prefer a nice hard copy in my eyes while I read the acceptance. I think they send rejections snail mail so you don't have an email address to reply to in some cases.
  9. Is it bad I dont even know if my current university is closed? To me, i go in every day whether it is closed due to snow or the weekend. On my last push disertation due to my advisor in 2 weeks from yesterday and a deadline I can't miss
  10. I know universities take more culture students every year based on my experience. To me bio/bioarch seems to get the lowest admission rate of any subfield
  11. That funding about UF is so funny I know they fund 30-40 percent of their students at best
  12. Emma- in the real world, not on grad cafe, it is very common to have a masters going in. People will probably say differently but many programs require this and every program I applied to did even if at my current university they say differently the reality at my uni is you must have a masters to be accepted to the phd program.
  13. I'm always under the belief go to the best university and hopefully your have the most realistic shot at a great job
  14. I do know with the old gre the university wouldn't allow acceptance with under a 1000 unlike special circumstance even if the department wanted you. Alot of universities had 1100 and then alot had 1200 with some at 1250. Mind you when I cared about it the only gre was the old scoring system.
  15. Hrdy- some people don't like knowing the truth. Every time I say this happens people start whining when I'm just being honest. Thank you for backing me up
  16. Or he's lying a bunch of other things could also be the case
  17. Laura- they give out both acceptances and rejections at the same time. Only wait listed could potentially not here with the rest
  18. If its an official acceptance everyone gets it at the same time so go check the website. Maybe he's advisor emailed him. Remember grad cafe is a small sample size.
  19. Gradcat- if you meet the min gpa and gre scores of the school then they aren't used besides for funding. Then it comes down to fit. And I don't know if its much chance by my experience. Every acceptance I got was a perfect fit and thinking back every rejection I got in some way was me trying to force a fit.
  20. Dena- schools tell you if they only accept the ones they can fund. If they don't think funding isn't a factor to them
  21. Gradcat- it depends. Sometimes the prof will call or email who they have accepted or if not you are at the mercy of the secretary. Some are quick and some are lazy. Plus some university do online so the results are faster some do snail mail. I got acceptances both ways and it drove me crazy. I saw an acceptance to my university 4 days before mine came from snail mail so I thought I was rejected but turned out they lived like 20 driving hours closer to my current university. I much perform an online means such as a website or email since most of mine came that way. Funny I got my first choice but was totally upset because it took forever, 4 days is a long time during this process.
  22. Let me clarify, they are placed in a no file and at the end of the decisions they are given the rejection letter along with all the rejection letters
  23. Strud- I disagree. The first round of apps gets discarding by a secretary who sole job is to look at both the gre and gpa and if either are too low they get discarded
  24. Pears- there no yes and no answer for every department. Every department is different and some have visits and some don't.
