  1. Deadman I suggest applying to more schools next year
  2. I have one of those pens and use it all the time.
  3. Adjunct to me are for grad students while attending phd programs. After that no one can make it unless their partner is the bread winner
  4. Flagstaff is not the town for you if you don't like snow that's for sure. My favorite class was biological anthropology with dr. Taylor who was my favorite prof. My advisor was dr. Antes. I loved all the Indian ruins within a 30 minute drive and if you went in the back entrance you didn't have to pay. I was involved the anthropology club as secretary. We did some cool things.
  5. AK- there's no place like flagstaff. Did my undergrad there. Best city in the world
  6. Rbar- but remember the forgiveness is only towards government loans and not private student loans.
  7. I am presenting, a poster due to trying to finish my dissertation, at the AAPA so I can go to the conference for free. It's fun and relax. Make sure to have business cards and the handouts with your poster on it like mentioned above. Your university may print your poster for free or a smaller fee than say kinko's. Also, plan ahead. Once the program is handed out map out your time there. I try to maximize the networking I can do and make sure to carry over the relationships you build. You find out by looking at conferences websites and looking to see when abstracts are due. Most of the time when just postering I write up an abstract and if accepted to do the research. Podium presentations are reserved for the things I care about the most and are giving a lot more time and dedication to.
  8. Canis- different subfield a so different advice. Not once did any advice revolve around funding. All the advice from my LOR writers were go with the very best advisor you can. This will lead you to the best opportunities. That is my advice but then again I worked my tail off in high school and got through undergrad debt free. And I'm going to be graduating in may with my phd with only 20k in student loan debt and I already have a tenure job set up. But then again what do I know. And I went to an unfunded masters, and got funding within a month. Turned down a funded phd went to an unfounded phd only to be told when I accepted the offer that I did actually get funded. And for the mix up the department arranged for me to be an instructor there as well and teach 1 class and get paid additional for it.
  9. Just want to point out now NSF considers physical anthropology a hard science while the other fields social sciences. I agree completely for this since for both masters and phd I used hard chemistry techniques. Thus when analyzing that article the two must be separated and hat article only applies to the social science side o anthropology. This is because physical side has a lot more post docs, and more funding opportunities. Plus with physical we can teach biology at the university level. In fact a lot of the elite profs for physical actually are part of the bio department versus anthro department. And I follow this philosophy...never take out more student loan debt than you WILL make in salary the first year out. Be honest with yourself. I see so many people in grad school that are just wasting their time and maxing out student loans every semester and is no where close to finishing after their fourth year. This makes me sad. And I do feel bad for the people 100k plus in student loan debt. As for me, I never worried about funding since I am confident in my ability of getting my own funding if necessary. What even better supplement the department funding with more funding which I have done my entire time.
  10. It's called their salary for being a prof. A chair gets extra pay and nicer office but being on dissertation committees is part of the job
  11. An easy way google field schools in the Middle East and they come up. UCSD, UCLA, Oxford, University of Arkansas, East Carolina University , UNLV, university of Copenhagen, University of Cairo, and university of Illinois Carbondale all are in some way affiliated with a field school in either Egypt or Jordan. So I guarentee all those places have a professor that works there and would provide you with enough support. That's actually a pretty good list if you ask me
  12. Bella- my current university says you don't need a masters but they never accept someone in the phd without one.
  13. Bryo- What subfield are you? If its bioarch or physical USF has a really good reputation and on par with the MAPS program
  14. Kait- I personally would choose option 1 based on what you said. They had to convince you the interdisciplinary degree was right for you versus you knew the anthropology route is a fit for you. Same school means same reputation for anthro phd programs and TAing is over rated in master programs since your have plenty of time to ta in the phd program you choose.
  15. Not every school has at agreed to the fifteenth.
  16. I think it matters more what you did than where you went to undergrad. And some schools give more opportunities than others. I would say schools like east Carolina state, Arizona state, UNLV, UN- Reno, Michigan, and say Ohio state can give better opportunities than many of the private undergrads can
  17. Canis- make sure your both happy though. If noone is happy being apart why since you only have one life.
  18. Canis- there will come a time that you two will have to make one career the priority over the other or be alright with living in different cities. Only you two can decide this. If I remember correctly your SO is going to med school right? If so they probably will be very busy so with lots of visited and hard work you could make the long distance thing work.
  19. One thing to keep in mind, not all TA jobs are the same. Some you won't neither put in 20 but some if you allow it will work you 30-40 hr. in those cases stick up for yourself and don't allow it. You are there to get your phd/masters not be the absolute best TA
  20. Strud- you can't go off ranking since it hasn't been done since 93
  21. I know alot of schools don't treat a UK masters any differently than a US
  22. Strud- to me a prestigious university is an R1 with a rock star in your subfield. Faulty- I am so sorry for you. Have you inquired why you weren't accepted? Most profs will tell you why and sometimes even tell you what you need to improve to get accepted by them for next year.
  23. I hope your SO and you are happy at wherever you chose to go
