People sometimes only use the results board.

I cite people outside the U.S. all the time. If you don't I would be worried about the type of job you would get no matter where you go for your phd. Also, the name of the school doesn't matter it is who you studied under that should matter. I don't go to chicago or NYU and I didn't even consider going there. I go to the school that enabled me to study under the one of the founders of my subfield. In fact he/she, to remain unanimous, is the only one of the founders who was still taking students. So it doesn't matter where you go. It matters who you studied under and what did you do with the opportunities that were given to you. Also, it matters how the interviews go. A school brings in three potential hires and based on their research, personality, and how the research fits into the school. Based on those things, the school hires a person.

It's won't matter the name of your university but it will matter your departments reputation.

There are plenty of profs who got their phd outside the us and they are profs at good programs. The us is slowing losing the race of education. Started off in high school level, then slowly it happened at undergrad level, and now it's making it way to grad school. I'm getting my phd in the us because I to had an elitiest attitude but I wish I would of explore other schools outside the us

All-around great program vs. Dream POI
anthropologygeek replied to kateow's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Go with the advisor since it will be most beneficial when you apply for jobs. -
Most professors today are older and when they applied it was easier to get in. If you wanted to go not only did you get in you got in anywhere you want. Don't blame them for not realizing times have change. Be glad they see you as someone they see worthy of grad school.

It depends on the department I would assume.
-
Alot of schools have unofficial waitlists. Also, they may take a second look at the applicants if their offers are turned down. You could always email or call the department but it's only march 3. I would give it till the end of the month.
-
It varies at different schools, but a good amount of schools let professors decide which students they want. So in the email, asking them if they are taking on new students is a big question to ask.
-
The school does matter on job placements.
-
Profs lie all the time to avoid awkward situation. Plus the difference looks like one student. Maybe the accepted 7 and only have really want 6. Programs do admit one or more extra at times to avoid getting turned down and the top alternate accepting another offer.

A future in archaeology?
anthropologygeek replied to OnceAndFutureGrad's topic in Anthropology Forum
Normally field schools are listed under various profs websites. There are various kinds with some in the us and some abroad. Field school is a great idea. -
I think it's a positive. They know you and like you.

Depends on your field.

Research match vs school prestige
anthropologygeek replied to global_nomad's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Reputation of your advisor goes a long ways but if the reputation of school itself is poor it will take a lot to overcome the school. But the school might be respected in the field, if you want to send me a pm and then I can answer this directly if I knew. -
What on earth does 'POI' stand for?
anthropologygeek replied to cokohlik's question in Questions and Answers
It means person of interest and it refers to who you want to work under. -
It's so hard because everyone who graduates with an anthropology ba degree applies for graduate school. So there are same number of spots to grad school with 500 times the applications. Also, college is now the normal thing to do in the USA so you have more people graduating with an anthropology degree.
-
Some schools allow you to defer while others don't. You need to talk to the program to find out.
-
Well a lot of schools have an unofficial waitlist so maybe your on that if acceptances and rejections have gone out. If only acceptances have gone out I would wait.

Being a tutor for students athletes on campus.

I think schools/advisor does matter. However, it only gets you the interview and you must stand out yourself. I've had both hands on advisors and hands off advisors and have excelled with both. I have found in the US if you have a work ethic your golden with your advisor. You would be amazed at how many grad students are lazy. And in that case advisor and school won't matter. They aren't getting the job let alone the interview.

Teaching Experience vs. Fellowships
anthropologygeek replied to HelplessnessBlues's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Only thing that should matter is will one get you the better job. If so chose that one. -
When applying for a phd is there such a thing as a safety schools?
-
In anthropology the schools are flooded with applications. I would cast a wider net next year.
