  1. I went to a CACREP- accredited Master's Program before applying for my PhD. I feel like if anything the experience has prepared me to work with clients in a clinical setting. I felt like it made my personal statement and essays a lot easier to write because I was able to narrow down exactly what I wanted to do after having the experience of seeing clients. My program had a practicum and internship which opened the door to a lot of presentations, outreach and advocacy opportunities. Which were all things I was able to add to my CV. I didn't individually pursue research during my Master's but I worked as a GA and a research assistant and that gave me experience working in a research lab. I am starting a Counseling Psych Phd program this Fall and because I came from a CACREP program I do not have to take any prereqs which is an added bonus.
  2. I think the reason why you see more Clinical Psychologists in hospital settings because typically individuals who go into Clinical psych are interested in that particular setting. Most people go into clinical psych because they want to heavily engage in research or work in a medical setting. However, counseling psychologist can work in all the same places as a clinical psychologist. But typically speaking people go into counseling psych to work in academia or work with clients. I also believe people tend to go the LMHC route because you can get that title with a Master's Degree. Also those programs take more applicants typically which means more graduates. So maybe seeing more of them in the field is related to that? It does appear that most Counseling Psychologist have their own practice instead of working at an agency. But I haven't noticed there being more LMHC but it could just be due to my location.
  3. Congratulations!! I just accepted an offer as well and I have been looking into apartments and mentally preparing myself to move (looking into cost, furniture, and making a budget). I also have been in touch with current students in the program who have provided a lot of helpful information about the area and the program. However, overall I am working to save money and relaxing because I know the next 5 years will be hectic!
  4. Okay that is relieving to hear! And I think you are right if the program takes offense to the question then maybe it could be a sign that the accreditation may be a problem. I think I am stressing about it because if I get accepted it is between this program and another program and would hate if the accreditation fell through when I received another offer.
  5. It sucks how difficult it is to get an acceptance within this field. I mean 8-9 openings out of hundreds of applicants is insane. I applied to both clinical and counseling psychology programs to see if I could increase my chances but it is still crazy competitive. Other than feeling overwhelmed during the crazy application cycle/interview period is I have been annoyed by family members assuming how easy it is to get an acceptance. But don't give up and keep trying! It can be frustrating but in the end all of your hard work and frustration will be worth it!
  6. I have an interview for a Counseling Psychology PhD program. My only concern about the program is that it was initially accredited in 2010 (relatively recent compared to other programs). And their next site visit is this year 2021. I guess I have a fear of them losing their accreditation even though I am unsure why they would. Do you guys think it's appropriate to ask about that during the interview? I really like this program because they mix urban education into their coursework.
  7. It's not necessarily a webpage but the Insiders Guide to Clinical and Counseling Psychology Programs will give you an overview of research interest present within each APA program. However, it does not list specific faculty names. It is still a useful tool in finding a general research match though!

  9. Something that helped me was being very intentional about the programs I applied to. I used The Insiders Guide to PhD Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology. This will tell you how many people applied to a program vs how many accepted, avg. gpa and gre scores of applicants, if they've offered assistantships, faculty interests, etc. While I applied to bigger more competitive schools I also applied to programs that aligned with my interests that had 60 applicants on average instead of 300. Or if I saw a program with average GRE quantitative scores being 167 and I am a 156 I would see that I am not very competitive for that program. If that makes sense? Using that guide has helped me increase the number of interview invites I received and got accepted into fully funded programs.
  10. The school shouldn't make you feel pressured to make a decision. You have the right to wait until April 15th to make a decision! However, it is just courteous to inform the school of your decision as soon as possible once you decide. Allows applicants on the waitlist plenty of time and saves them some stress.
