  1. its the MAS in spatial analysis for public health!
  2. the feeling when you get rejected from Waterloo but get into Johns Hopkins...
  3. wtf... they literally told me they can't even open my application to review it before im officially conferred in June. (even though they have all of my grades and letters saying that I will be graduating in legit 3 weeks)
  4. Hey, for people who applied to LSHTM distance learning, how long did it take to hear back? Website says within 5 DAY - this must be a mistake...
  5. Okay so whose biting the bullet and calling Michelle today
  6. I mean I honestly don't love that they call it "another round" because we all know that "round" will consist of 3 or 4 acceptances It kinda reminds me of opening a big bag of chips only to realize that its 3/4 air
  7. I think this is because everyone that has accepted (25) are likely still hearing back from other programs. For instance, many Mac applicants also likely applied to UofT and some likely haven't heard back yet. Once all offers have gone out (likely may-june), then people might start changing their minds as they hear from other programs. So a Mac students might decide instead to go to UofT if they get accepted in the coming weeks, leaving a space open at Mac, so another round of offers will go out to cover those that have left
  8. I'm glad! Like I said, I have a unique and atypical experience with UofT. I'm happy to hear that the undergrad science reputation doesn't follow into the MPH programs.
  9. Alright folks lets get ready for a Monday filled with decisions
  10. Honestly, its only a couple years of your life! Personally, as an extrovert and someone who thrives on other people's positive energy (as silly as that sounds), I think that I would have a really hard time. BUT - that's just me. Many people know that the environment/culture has a 'reputation' and just decide to not give a crap cause elitism is stupid. Just because I don't think that I would have a good time doesn't mean that I think others won't
  11. Oh! There s definitely nothing "wrong" with the culture. It really just depends on the kind of person you are. And, like I said, Grew up around it so my perception is going to be completely different than yours. That said, in MY PERSONAL experience, I'm a very outgoing person and a total extrovert. The parts of UofT culture that I have been exposed to give off kind of an elitist vibe. UofT is super competitive to get in (mostly for grad school) but all the undergrads (that I've been exposed to) seem to think that they are super special and better than everyone else for going to UofT. In Toronto itself, UofT students (that I know) look down on Ryerson and York students and suggest that they only picked those schools because they "couldn't get in" to UofT. I was SUPER judged by some peers at UofT for choosing McMaster (even though I also got into UofT and my program at Mac is just as good lol). The negative culture I've experienced revolves a lot around Undergrad Science students. So, I 100% realize that this is not the case for the whole school. Generally, I'd say UofT is known to have a cold atmosphere driven by elitism and competition. UofT's MPH programs are AMAZING from what I've heard. Again, this experience of the culture is based on my personal experience and likely does not reflect everyone else's experiences (though these opinions do tend to be those that are popular)
  12. I LOVE TO SEE IT (im just nervous cause in last year's forum people were waiting until like June - why should we trust them this year?) Like she told me "in the next week" two weeks ago
  13. I know that today was supposed to be a deadline for the first-rounders for a few program....I thought today would be louder
  14. I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask - most of the Dalla Lana folks I know are professors lol. Objectively, it will be easier to find jobs in Toronto because Toronto has all the jobs. However, this means that competition is very high - finding a job in Toronto is HARD. There are also multiple institutions in the city (more students) to compete with. Big city = many jobs = lots of competition. So, it's a double edged sword. MPHs are professional programs and are typically very employable. Right now, because of circumstance, it would be easier to get a job moving to a small community that needs all hands on deck. But, thats just because of the pandemic. Ultimately, you'll be able to find a job with an MPH. It is a very employable degree and it is also a buildable degree. If you decide to, you can go back to school and do more, get some certificates! I don't know the stats of employment for each MPH program but I honestly wouldn't anticipate Dalla Lana to be much higher than other schools.
  15. As someone who legit grew up on that campus....can confirm....I live right next to it, one of the greatest universities, and decided to go to Mac instead - I wound't go back and change anything. Absolutely no shade to anyone who got in! It's an incredibly amazing program and is super competitive, congratulations!!! I have a specific perspective because the first 18 years of my life were surrounded by UofT lol.
  16. Honestly, I'm from downtown Toronto, I've gone to many public lectures within Dalla Lana and it's great, don't get me wrong, but I don't love the environment. I have a few family friends that are professors in the department and they're awesome people and have given me so many opportunities esp with Toronto Public Health, but I much prefer McMaster's environment. This is 100% my opinion based on my own experiences. I've also stayed intentionally away from Dalla Lana in terms of applying because of my personal connections - I don't want to go into detail but I basically would almost certainly not get in because of these connections.
  17. MPH at Vic and Wloo (still nothing from both) MA in medical anthropology at Mac, research project in public health interventions for new mothers with PPD - full funding + RAship starting like SOON -- current top choice because I applied on a whim, after the deadline, requested the head of the program as a supervisor after talking with her for like 10 minutes and she told me not to get my hopes up because I didnt apply for OGS/CGS-M. Against all odds she chose me as her only masters student and the whole program has like 10 spots so im stunned to have gotten in. MA in human geography (Community + public health specialization) at Mac, research with a prof I've worked with for the last few years, research surrounding workplace policy implementations to help workers who are also caretakers in their private lives (very policy side of public health) - full funding + guaranteed TAships -- this program was going to be my top choice but my supervisor is really hard to work with. I genuinely don't know what I'll do if I get into an MPH. doing an MPH has been my DREAM for years. but this anthro program came out of nowhere and its such a great opportunity. A small part of me wants to not get into an MPH so that I dont have to make this choice. but at the same time I want to get in! its all I've ever wanted. I think my plan is to do the anthro THEN do an MPH after, it'll give me a better chance at getting in and the MA is only a one year program so ? idk man im STRUGGLING
  18. mine is still application IM GOING TO SCREAM The program I was accepted to (which sounds super interesting and is an amazing opportunity) wants me to start an RA at the beginning of may to get ahead in my thesis before the program even starts. SO I NEED TO KNOW AND I NEED TO KNOW SOON
  19. Thank you so much!
  20. That's so strange...there is always a deadline, I know last year Waterloo had one - do you mind emailing to ask? I'm sure there should definitely be one
  21. Hmm yeah, deadline to submit official documents is always late...maybe they'll send a deadline in the official letter when you get it - keep us posted please!
  22. I respect that Michelle @ Waterloo is probably swamped and annoyed with us (esp those of us who have called her more than once....) but COME ON ....can someone pls just call and ask what the deadline was for the first round to make a decision....if I call again I stg they will black list me (note: I only actually called twice, weeks apart and she didnt remember me the second time but I just cant anymore)
  23. lol unless you don't want to do clinical research? The amount of public health careers that have nothing to do with clinical settings is vast. To each their own, but I think that your recommendation is subjective and doesn't widely apply here.
  24. Online programs are viewed as just as reputable as in person programs if they come from reputable universities, like Waterloo is. Many universities in Canada and around the world have renowned online programs. Johns Hopkins has an online program that is very competitive, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is one of the highest ranked public health schools in the world and it's program is well-known for its distance learning options. The world is shifting toward online professional graduate programs including MPH. If anything, Waterloo is ahead of the game because thats the direction these programs are going. At the end of the program, it is not specified on your degree that it was an online program. Because it does not matter.
  25. I think that this is a really hard time for a lot of us. This is the "middle" period where we weren't in the first round but weren't rejected. I know that people are waiting for as much information as possible but some people are seriously putting off decisions and it affects so many other people. I don't think its wrong to wait...its just frustrating y'know?
