I received my email at 1:22 (edmonton time) to check my portal. All they tell you is there are 35 spots and that they won’t disclose waitlist positions

In my waitlist portal email that Vicki sent to me, she said there are exactly 35 people on this waitlist. 2 years ago, half the class 30/60 students were from the waitlist!!

Does anyone know the details of UofA's waitlist - i.e. number of applicants put on the waitlist, number of applicants on the waitlist that typically get accepted?
I realize its likely guess work, but you never know if there is a typical amount.

Hi everyone! Excited to join in and say I received an acceptance to UAlberta! I figured I would go ahead and share my stats since a lot of people have been asking Im finishing up a B.Sc-Kin and applied with about a 3.7 sGPA, and around a 3.5 cGPA I think (can't remember..sorry!). I've worked with people who have disabilities in both a direct support and activity coordination role. I've also worked with children who have autism in their skill development. As for SLP honestly I don't have much experience (around 10 hours total). For the GRE I had verbal 148, quant 154 and writing 4.5. Hope that helps. Congrats to everyone who has received an acceptance so far this year!

I got a portal message about needing to update an transcript from 2019 for a course I took at another university and that I’d get an email soon. I got the official letter a few minutes later.
For sure! I don’t mind my last name starts with S. I got my B.Ed in 2020 and after being waitlisted I decided to take on a diploma in ESL last fall. I’ve worked as an RA for the past three years and also volunteering in various labs. I think that really helped alongside my student teaching experiences. My gpa calculation was a little strange because I had practicum courses in my last two years so I think I barely met 3.5 last year. That’s probably why I was waitlisted last year. I think taking on more coursework and the removal of competitive GPA helped me this round.

For Western, if you have a login with the student center, the decision (acceptance, rejection, waitlist) appears right on the front page.
Source: this is my third time applying and I'm tired of seeing the yellow triangle indicating waitlisted ?

I've also wanted to put my input on this feed for a while... I guess now's the time since anxiety is running high with 1 week until decisions are out? so this is my third time applying to Canadian SLP programs, and it has not been an easy 3 years.  From volunteering in SLP and audiology clinics full time, taking a bunch of non-degree courses to increase my GPA, working full time at an SLP clinic as a client care coordinator and STILL receiving waitlisted/rejection... this process was grueling and took a huge toll on my mental health. I feel all your posts and empathize with the anxiety from the bottom of my heart.
I decided to apply this year to US universities, and man, that experience was incredible. First, it's super easy to apply as they have a centralized app portal for the majority of SLP programs in the states. I got follow-ups from program coordinators personally asking for more information on my experiences, TWO acceptances so far, and just an all around feeling like they value each and every applicant.
I wanted to share this experience with you to let you know that each and every one of you are working your ASSES off and in the hopefully unlikely event that you don't receive good news this years, DON'T YOU DARE GIVE UP.  There ARE options and you ARE worth it.
Also I would be more than happy to share my stats, info I've gathered from US unis, and just if you want to DM me to rant I'm more than available.

Sooooo... I emailed Vicki (using an alias and a new Gmail account to keep it anonymous?) and it looks like a longer wait is confirmed. We can all stop incessantly checking emails for a little while....

I know, I've been going through past years blogs and trying to work out when we may hear. On the one hand, the last two years it seems to have been the first two weeks of March, on a Monday. On the other hand, UofA changed their admissions process this year. Does that mean it will take them longer? You would think their new approach is more in depth/complicated and so it will take them longer. Are we looking at the end of March?
And then I'm reading when people seemed to get their emails in past years. Looks like around 11am, but is that when we can expect to hear every year?
As you can see, I have completely over analyzed it.

Does anyone have previous experience applying to UofA? Just wondering how long the application was "under review" before a decision was made. Getting anxious and checking multiple times a day lol

Hey I'm sorry but I'm not sure! All I was told was that they would be looking at all the additional materials first, but I don't know what specific experiences they will be prioritizing. I imagine that GPA may still be a factor, especially for people near the bottom of the top ~60 because if people have similarly ranked additional materials then I imagine GPA would come in to differentiate those people. This is just my personal speculation though based on the limited info the student society gave me so please don't take this as fact!!

For those of you wondering about UofA's new admission process, I think I may be able to shed a bit more light! In past years (including 2020 admission cycle) UofA ranked all applicants by GPA and only once they had their rankings of the top grades did they begin to look at any supplemental items. This year they are doing it the opposite way and will be looking at all the additional items and doing their rankings while blinded to the GPAs. They have changed this in an effort to get a more diverse class and are using the GPA cutoff listed as just a minimum. So if you have great supplementals (within the top 62 applicants) and a lower GPA still within their cutoff, it seems like you would have a fairly decent shot at being admitted. Obviously there are more nuanced details that won't have been shared outside of staff though so do keep that in mind!
I'm a student at UofA and our student society just gave us this information recently and we were told to share with applicants. Obviously my class did not have admissions using this process so I don't have much more insight but I thought I'd pass along what I was told!

No worries! I personally haven't dealt with Vicki before, but from forums it seems like she's been nice and provided useful information for others. I completely understand the anxiety though, but maybe it would be better to email her now than in a few weeks when acceptances start rolling out? Then I would be really nervous (but also excited) about seeing emails!

Hey! The GPA as an entrance requirement and the highlighting of EDI are new for 2021, the link I sent above outlines this so if you wanna see more it's a useful link!
For your second part, are you speaking about UA specifically or all schools? On the ORPAS website, it says that graduate courses are one of the things not normally considered when calculating ORPAS GPA, although further down it says "Each rehabilitation school uses its own admissions criteria to review and assess applicants' graduate study records". That seems a tad unclear to me (and only concerns the ORPAS schools as well) so I think it definitely might be worth reaching out to each school individually to ask! I know that's concerning graduate courses (and not a thesis like you asked) but thought it might still be a bit useful! This information I pulled can be found here -> https://www.ouac.on.ca/guide/orpas-gpa-calculations/#grad.
    Hope this helps

Yes I saw that, thank you! I emailed Vicki about that in the fall and she said that if you have all of those requirements (Indigenous course, relevant EDI information, and GPA) that you should have a strong application! So fingers crossed!

Just for reference I was waitlisted last year with a 3.42 since I had a whole semester of grades missing! So I do think they look at a lot more than subGPA at UofA.

Thank you to you both for sharing this information! I wasn't aware of this before.
However, I think it's worth pointing out that UAlberta is basing their admissions off of different criteria/ a new selection process this year. This included GPA being primarily restricted to an entrance requirement (minimum 3.3 on 4.0 scale), the importance of highlighting EDI in your application, and the Indigenous course requirement. Additionally, they're not using any courses from Winter 2020 towards GPA calculations which is understandable, although a bit unfortunate for those who worked really hard throughout that semester to boost grades and it doesn't matter for that application.
